eSIM for Europe

A Europe eSIM is not a country plan. It is one profile and one data allowance that keeps working as you cross from one European country into the next, so a trip through several of them does not turn into a sequence of separate purchases and profile swaps. Check the covered country list on this page before you book, because a regional plan covers the countries on its list and nothing beyond them.

Getting online when you land

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi, before your first flight. It stays dormant until you activate it, so an early install costs you nothing.

Wherever your trip starts, the sequence is the same: leave airplane mode, select the travel line for mobile data, and enable data roaming on that line. Roaming is precisely what a regional plan does, so this toggle is not optional; it is the mechanism. Once you are attached, the phone has registered onto a local network in whichever country you are standing in.

The part that surprises first time users comes later, at the borders. When you cross into the next country, your phone drops the old network and finds a new one on its own, usually within a few minutes. Sometimes it lingers on the previous country's signal, which is common near land borders and normal. If data has not resumed shortly after a crossing, one cycle of airplane mode forces the phone to look again.

The networks you'll be on

There is no single European network, and that is the point of a regional plan. Instead, the profile is authorised on many different national operators, and you are handed to whichever one serves the place you are in at that moment.

In practice that means your connection quality changes as you travel, and it changes for reasons that have nothing to do with the plan. Western European cities, particularly the large ones, generally offer strong modern service. Smaller countries and rural regions vary. A high speed train can move you between two very different network environments inside an hour. Your status bar will show different network names in different countries, which is exactly what should happen.

Because coverage is inherited from local operators rather than owned, a regional plan cannot promise a uniform experience across the continent. What it can promise is continuity: the same profile, the same allowance, no new purchase at each border.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Reliably strong: the major cities and their transport systems. Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Vienna, Prague, Lisbon and their peers are densely covered, including most metro networks, and the motorway and main rail corridors between them are well served.

Where it thins is predictable once you know the pattern. Alpine valleys around Interlaken and the mountain passes lose signal behind the rock. Long rail tunnels cut out completely, and even on open track the metal bodied carriages of high speed trains weaken reception enough to interrupt calls. Northern Scandinavia, the Scottish Highlands and the emptier stretches of Iberia and the Balkans all have real gaps.

Ferries are the other case worth planning for. Sailing between the Greek islands, along the Croatian coast from Split, or across the Baltic, you hold a land network near the coast and lose it mid crossing. Ship based mobile service is a separate maritime system and is not part of a regional plan, so keep data switched off at sea unless you are certain what you are connecting to.

What you'll actually use data for here

Trains and tickets, above all. European rail runs on live information: platform changes, delays, connection risk, seat reservations that must be added separately. A multi country rail trip without data is a trip spent reading departure boards and hoping.

Accommodation increasingly assumes connectivity too, with self check in codes, door keypads and arrival instructions sent by message on the day. Island hopping depends on ferry timetables that change with the season and the weather. City transport apps, ride hailing, museum time slots and restaurant bookings all live on the phone, and several major attractions now sell entry only in advance.

Then there is language. A regional trip can cross four languages in a week, and camera translation on a menu or a station notice earns its keep daily. Add maps for old city centres that defeat orientation, and the photo uploads that follow a good day in Santorini or Barcelona.

Before you fly

Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, then screenshot the QR code and activation details so an offline moment cannot lock you out.

Read the covered country list properly and match it against your route, including any transit stops. This is the single most important check for a regional plan; a country you assumed was included but is not will simply not carry your data.

Download tickets, boarding passes and hotel confirmations for offline access rather than trusting a connection in a tunnel. Pull offline maps for each city on your itinerary. Keep your home SIM installed with data disabled so verification codes still reach you, and label both lines so the regional plan is the one doing the work all the way across the continent.
