How much data do I need for a week abroad?

For a typical week of maps, messaging, social media and some browsing, most travellers use around 3 to 7 GB. If you stream a lot of video or make frequent video calls, plan for more. Use the calculator above to get an estimate based on your own habits, then round up to the next plan size.

Does using maps use a lot of data?

No. Turn-by-turn navigation uses very little data, roughly a few megabytes per hour, because the map tiles are small and often cached. Downloading offline maps before you travel cuts it even further. Streaming video is what really drains an allowance, not maps.

What happens if I run out of data?

You can top up or buy another plan at any time, so it is fine to start with a smaller estimate and add more if you need it. Many travellers buy a modest plan, keep an eye on usage in their phone settings, and top up once if a longer trip calls for it.

Are these estimates accurate?

They are approximate. Actual use depends on video quality, app settings, how often you are on wifi, and signal strength. Treat the result as a sensible starting point: if you are unsure, choose the next size up, since topping up mid-trip is easy but running dry at the wrong moment is not.
