eSIM for Estonia

Few countries assume a connected phone as thoroughly as Estonia does. Tickets, parking, ferry bookings and half the practical business of a visit expect you to have a screen and a signal, so travelling here without mobile data is less charming than it sounds. An eSIM solves it before you arrive, which is very much in the spirit of the place.

Getting online when you land

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Installation is a one time setup; activation happens separately when you arrive, so there is no downside to preparing early.

Tallinn Airport is unusually close to the city, close enough that the tram into town takes only a few stops, and being connected on the walk out of the terminal is what lets you buy the ticket for it. Switch off airplane mode, choose the travel line for mobile data, and enable data roaming on that line. It reads as counterintuitive for a plan bought for Estonia, but every travel eSIM registers as a visiting profile and needs that permission.

Arriving by sea from Helsinki, the same applies as the ferry approaches the terminal at Vanasadam; you will usually pick up an Estonian network before you dock.

The networks you'll be on

Estonian traffic here runs on Tele2, which carries 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G, and Telia, which carries 3G and 4G/LTE.

That combination gives you a modern network in a country that has invested heavily in one. In Tallinn, Tartu and the larger towns, 5G is available on the Tele2 side and LTE is the reliable floor everywhere else. Estonia's small size and flat terrain work in your favour: there is no mountain range to hide behind, and the road network between the main cities is well covered end to end.

The 3G layer is a fallback rather than a daily reality. In most of the places you will actually go, LTE or better is what your status bar shows.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Strong: Tallinn including the Old Town and Kadriorg, Tartu, Parnu, Narva, Viljandi, Haapsalu, and the highways connecting them. Coverage along the northern coast and out through Lahemaa's villages is better than the emptiness of the landscape suggests.

Where it gets patchy: deep forest and bog. Estonia is heavily wooded, and walking the boardwalks at Viru bog, or out into Soomaa on a spring flood, you can lose service for stretches. The islands are generally covered around their towns, Kuressaare on Saaremaa and Kardla on Hiiumaa among them, but the interiors and the smaller islands further out are thinner, and ferry crossings can drop mid channel. Winter ice roads across to the islands are a beautiful, empty place to have no signal.

The Russian border area around Narva is a special case: near any national border, phones sometimes latch onto a network on the wrong side. Watch what your status bar says before you use data there.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around. Ride hailing and scooter rental are deeply embedded in Estonian city life, and both are app first: no app, no scooter. Public transport ticketing, parking and increasingly ferry bookings work the same way.

Maps are worth having in Tallinn's Old Town, where the lanes are medieval and the shortest route is rarely the obvious one, and outside the cities where forest roads look identical for long stretches. Estonia is also an excellent country for last minute plan changes, and those depend on being able to check a ferry timetable or a museum's opening hours from wherever you are standing.

Remote workers make up a real share of visitors here, and video calls hold up well on LTE in the cities. Add the usual: translation, since Estonian resists guessing; weather, which in winter genuinely determines the day; and photo uploads from a country that looks good in snow and better in the long summer dusk.

Before you fly

Verify your phone supports eSIM and is carrier unlocked. Nearly all recent flagships qualify; older and budget handsets often do not.

Screenshot the QR code and activation details so they survive a flat battery. Keep your home SIM installed with data off, because that is where bank verification codes arrive, and Estonia is close to cashless in practice; a card that will not verify is a real problem here.

Download offline maps for Tallinn, Tartu and any island or national park you plan to visit. If you are travelling in winter, carry a power bank and keep the phone warm: cold weather flattens batteries fast, and a dead phone in Estonia is the same as no ticket, no ride and no map. Finally, name your two lines clearly in settings so data goes to the travel plan and stays there.
