You can drive across Malta in under an hour, and the network reflects that: this is a small, densely built country where the operators have had no trouble covering nearly all of it well. Our coverage here runs through GO and Epic (the former Vodafone Malta), both carrying 4G/LTE and 5G, which means a fast connection is the normal state of affairs rather than something you go hunting for. The interesting question in Malta is not whether you will have signal; it is what you do with it on a trip where a bus, a ferry and a cliff path can all happen before lunch.

Getting online when you land

Malta International sits at Luqa, a short ride from Valletta and shorter still from the hotel strips at Sliema and St Julian's, so you will be in a taxi or on a bus within minutes of clearing the terminal.

Install the profile at home while you have wifi, keep it dormant, and switch it on after landing. Registration usually takes seconds here; if nothing has appeared by the time you reach the taxi rank, toggle airplane mode once and confirm that data roaming is enabled for the travel line specifically. That setting is behind most of what people mistake for a faulty eSIM.

Leave your home number switched on for calls and one-time codes with its data off. Car hire desks, hotels and the local banking apps all like sending a verification text, and you want it arriving where your accounts expect it.

The networks you'll be on

You will be on GO or Epic. Both run 4G/LTE and 5G, so whichever one your handset settles on, you are on a modern network rather than a fallback.

Selection is automatic and generally sensible. If a connection feels slow somewhere it obviously should not, open network settings, switch operator selection to manual and try the other name on the list; with only two entries to choose from, this takes about ten seconds to test. Put it back on automatic afterwards.

The practical effect of 5G in a country this size is that heavy tasks stop being something you defer to the hotel. Uploading a day's photos, downloading a film for the flight home or joining a video call from a rooftop all work in the moment.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Strong and consistent: Valletta and the Three Cities, Sliema, St Julian's and Paceville, Birkirkara and the inland towns, Mdina and Rabat, Marsaxlokk, and the whole airport corridor. Gozo is well served too, with Victoria and the Mgarr ferry area behaving much like the main island. The bus network reaches almost everywhere, and you will stay online for essentially all of any bus journey.

The thin spots are structural rather than geographic. Valletta and Mdina are built of thick limestone bastions and narrow shaded lanes, and inside the deepest of those, or down in a cellar bar, you will lose bars. The Hypogeum, the wartime shelters and the catacombs are underground and behave accordingly. On the cliffs at Dingli and along the Ta' Cenc side of Gozo you are fine on the path and less so at the bottom of a gully.

Water is the other case. The Gozo ferry crossing holds up well because it is short and both ends are populated, but a day boat out to Comino and the Blue Lagoon, or a dive boat sitting off a wreck, can drift in and out. And your position on the map will wander inside the walled cities for the same reason it does anywhere with narrow high-walled streets: the sky is not visible enough for a clean satellite fix. That is a positioning limit, not a network one.

What you'll actually use data for here

Buses. The public network is the default way to get around for most visitors, it is entirely app-driven for live times and route planning, and the difference between checking the app and standing hopefully at a stop is roughly half an hour of your holiday. Ride hailing apps operate here too and are widely used in the Sliema and St Julian's area.

Ferries next. The Valletta to Sliema and Valletta to Three Cities crossings, and the Gozo run, all publish live timetables, and schedules shift with weather and season. Checking before you walk to the quay saves the walk back.

Booking is the third one. Timed-entry sites, boat trips, dive slots and the better restaurants are all reserved online, often on the day, and in high season the good options go early.

You will not need translation, which is a genuine saving here: English is an official language and is used on signage, menus and in every shop and office you are likely to enter.

Before you fly

Confirm your handset is unlocked and eSIM capable, install the profile at home, and label it clearly so you can tell it apart from your home line at a glance.

Download offline maps of Valletta, Mdina and Victoria before you go. You will have data in all three, but a cached map plus a memory of the street layout beats a drifting blue dot in a walled town.

If you are hiring a car, set up the parking and navigation apps before you collect it rather than in the car park. And if your trip continues to Sicily by ferry or hop flight, check whether your plan covers Italy or whether a regional one suits the trip better, because a single country plan stops at the water.

GO, Epic and Melita: why Vodafone Malta now shows as Epic

Malta has three mobile networks: GO, Epic and Melita. Epic is the former Vodafone Malta, which had traded under the Vodafone name since 1997. Vodafone Group agreed to sell it in December 2019, the sale to Monaco Telecom completed on 31 March 2020, and the brand changed to Epic on 17 November 2020.

This eSIM connects to GO and to the Epic network (listed under its old name, Vodafone), with 5G where available. If your phone's status bar or network list shows Epic, that is the network formerly called Vodafone and it is working as intended; you don't need to change anything. Melita, best known for cable TV and broadband, is the third operator and is not used by this eSIM.

Because the islands are small and densely built, coverage on both GO and Epic is close to universal on Malta and Gozo. If one network is slow somewhere, your phone can move to the other. When you are on Comino or a boat between the islands, the phone simply holds whichever mast reaches furthest across the water.

tallinja app, cards and contactless fares on Malta's buses

Buses are run by Malta Public Transport under the tallinja name, and its free app is the most useful thing to install before you arrive. It shows real-time arrivals, plans journeys, lets you top up and check a tallinja card, and books On Demand night travel, where you pick your pick-up and drop-off points and times.

How paying works for visitors:

Contactless: you can pay on board with cash, a contactless bank card or a phone wallet, which suits most short stays.
Personalised tallinja cards give free travel on day and night routes, the Sliema to Valletta and Three Cities ferry and the Barrakka Lift. They cost €25 to register for adults and are designed mainly for people living in Malta, so for a short trip they are rarely worth it.
tallinja Direct express routes are always charged, even with a card.
Penalties: travelling without a valid ticket or card can cost you a €50 fine.

The Foreign Office warns that pickpockets work the crowded Valletta to St Julian's routes in summer, so keep your phone in a front pocket rather than in your hand while you stand.

Paceville nights and hunting-season walks

St Julian's and Paceville are where most of Malta's nightlife is, and the UK Foreign Office reports that criminals have drugged people in some bars and gentlemen's clubs there, then forced them to pay large sums or assaulted them. Buy your own drinks, keep them in sight, check bills for overcharges and stay with your friends. Agree a meeting point and keep your phone charged, so you can find each other or book a ride home without needing someone else's phone.

In the countryside, a different risk catches walkers out. Bird hunting takes place in spring and autumn, with guns commonly used from around two hours before sunrise to two hours after sunset. Hunting areas are rarely marked and can overlap with walking routes and camping spots on both Malta and Gozo. If you plan an early-morning or evening walk along the cliffs at Dingli or the Gozo coast in those seasons, stick to obvious paths and check local advice.

Other practical points from the Foreign Office: keep a copy of your passport somewhere safe, be wary of scams that start online, and remember that penalties for drug offences, including cannabis, are severe for visitors.

Lifeguard flags, undercurrents and calling 112

Lifeguards patrol most of Malta's beaches in summer and use a flag system: a red flag means conditions are dangerous, and you should stay out of the water. Some beaches have strong undercurrents, and on unpatrolled stretches waves can reach further than expected and pull back hard. Hidden rocks and shallow water have caused serious injuries, so don't dive into water you don't know, a particular risk at the rocky swimming spots that are popular in Malta.

Other things to bear in mind:

Swim inside marked bathing zones where there are any, and take extra care where there are no lifeguards or signs.
Keep small children within arm's reach in the sea and around hotel pools.
Follow local advice when jellyfish are present, which happens most summers.

A compact week across the Maltese islands for history lovers who also want to swim: Baroque Valletta and the Grand Harbour, prehistoric temples and the Hypogeum, the old capital at Mdina, two days on Gozo and a final swim at Comino's Blue Lagoon.

Day 1 Valletta

Valletta

Malta International Airport to Valletta is about 20 to 30 minutes by bus or taxi.

Enter Valletta through Renzo Piano's City Gate. Visit St John's Co-Cathedral, with its gilded interior and Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John, then the Grandmaster's Palace. Walk Republic Street to Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. At noon or 4pm, watch the saluting battery fire from the Upper Barrakka Gardens above the Grand Harbour.

Signal GO and Epic, which still appears as Vodafone in some network lists, both have 5G in Valletta; reception can dip inside the Co-Cathedral's thick walls.
Day 2 Valletta

The Three Cities and the Hypogeum

The Valletta–Three Cities ferry takes about 10 minutes; Paola is a short bus or taxi ride from Birgu.

Take the ferry from Valletta across the Grand Harbour to Birgu, or a traditional dgħajsa water taxi. Walk the lanes of Birgu to Fort St Angelo and the Inquisitor's Palace, then on to Senglea's Gardjola Gardens. In the afternoon, visit the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola, an underground prehistoric burial complex; tickets are limited and need booking weeks ahead.

Signal Strong coverage in the Three Cities; inside the Hypogeum, photography isn't allowed and signal is poor underground, so plan to be offline for the guided visit.
Day 3 Valletta

Mdina, Rabat and the Dingli Cliffs

Valletta to Mdina takes about 30 minutes by bus; Dingli is a further 10 to 15 minutes.

Take a bus to Mdina, the walled former capital, and walk its quiet streets to St Paul's Cathedral and the bastion views across the island. Cross into Rabat for St Paul's Catacombs, a network of early Christian tombs. In the late afternoon, continue to the Dingli Cliffs, the highest point of the coast, for sunset over the open sea.

Day 4 Valletta

Marsaxlokk, the Blue Grotto and the temples

Marsaxlokk to Wied iż-Żurrieq is about 25 minutes by car or a longer bus ride.

Spend the morning at Marsaxlokk, a fishing village where brightly painted luzzu boats line the harbour; the Sunday market is the busiest. Head west to Wied iż-Żurrieq for a boat trip into the Blue Grotto sea caves if the sea is calm. Walk on to the megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, older than Stonehenge, on the clifftop.

Signal 4G is reliable in Marsaxlokk and at the temple visitor centre; on the Blue Grotto boat under the cliffs, signal comes and goes.
Day 5 Gozo

Ferry to Gozo: the Citadel and Ġgantija

The Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes; a fast ferry from Valletta takes about 45 minutes.

Cross to Gozo and head to Victoria to see the Citadel, the fortified hilltop town with its cathedral and views across the island. In the afternoon, visit the Ġgantija temples near Xagħra, among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, and the nearby windmill. End the day at the salt pans along the coast at Xwejni.

Signal Coverage holds across the short crossing and is good in Victoria; it's thinner in some valleys in the north of Gozo.
Day 6 Gozo

Gozo's coast: Dwejra, Xlendi and Ramla

Drive or take a bus to Dwejra, where the Azure Window arch collapsed in 2017; you can still see the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock, and snorkel when the sea is calm. Move on to Xlendi Bay for a swim from the rocks. In the afternoon, go to Ramla Bay, a red-sand beach on the north coast, and walk up to Calypso's Cave viewpoint above it.

Signal 4G is usable at Dwejra and Xlendi, though the Inland Sea's enclosed bay can weaken it; Ramla Bay has decent coverage on the beach.
Day 7 Malta

Comino's Blue Lagoon and departure

Boats to Comino take about 10 to 20 minutes from Mġarr on Gozo or Ċirkewwa on Malta; Ċirkewwa to the airport is about 1 hour by car.

Take an early boat to Comino before the day-trip crowds and swim in the clear water of the Blue Lagoon, then walk up to St Mary's Tower for views back over Gozo and Malta. Return to Ċirkewwa by mid-afternoon and transfer to the airport, allowing at least an hour for the drive.

Signal Comino has only a few residents and its coverage is thinner than on the main islands; you'll usually pick up signal from Malta or Gozo at the Blue Lagoon, but it can be slow when crowded.
