About this eSIM

A capital built on a gorge, a wine valley, an old steel belt in the south and a forested north all fit inside a country you can drive across before lunch. Two things follow for your phone: you are almost never far from a foreign border, and public transport is free to ride nationwide, so the thing you keep looking up is which tram, train or bus, and when. A travel eSIM covers both, provided you set it up before you get here.

Getting online when you land

Findel sits close enough to Luxembourg City that the bus into town takes less time than the walk from a far gate at a big hub. Have the profile installed and the QR code already scanned before departure; the airport is not a place you want to be troubleshooting an activation while a free tram you did not know about pulls away outside.

A lot of arrivals come by rail instead, from Brussels, Paris or Trier, and those journeys cross a border partway. Leave the travel line switched off until you are actually in the country, then enable data roaming for it and let the phone register. Your home number stays on its own line for calls and verification texts.

Once connected, set the travel eSIM as your default data line and check that background app refresh is doing what you want. Nothing here demands a heavy connection, but you will lean on maps constantly in the old city, where the street you want is often forty metres below the street you are on.

The networks you'll be on

This eSIM runs on Orange, POST and Tango in Luxembourg, all three on 5G, and your phone attaches to one of them automatically. That covers everything a traveller does: navigation in the Grund, video calls from a hotel in Kirchberg, streaming on a train to Ettelbruck.

Watch the carrier name, though. This is a small country wrapped in three larger ones, and roads through the south near Esch-sur-Alzette or along the Moselle can run within sight of France, Belgium or Germany. Phones near those edges sometimes register on a mast across the line, which turns a Luxembourg plan into no plan at all until you notice. If your data goes quiet while the signal bars look healthy, that is almost always what has happened; switch network selection to manual and pick Orange, POST or Tango.

The same applies deliberately rather than accidentally when you day-trip to Trier or Metz. A plan bought for one country stops at that country's edge.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

The capital, Kirchberg, the station district, Belair and the surrounding communes are all reliably served, as are Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange and the southern towns. The Moselle wine villages such as Remich and Grevenmacher, plus Ettelbruck and Diekirch in the middle of the country, behave the same way.

Terrain is what interrupts it. The city itself sits on a plateau split by deep sandstone gorges, and dropping into the Grund or the Petrusse valley by lift or footpath can cost you a bar or two. Further north, the Ardennes valleys around Vianden and Esch-sur-Sure are steep and wooded, and the rock gorges of the Mullerthal swallow signal completely in places. Road tunnels do what road tunnels always do.

These are pockets rather than regions. You are usually minutes away from being connected again, which is not something you can say about most countries.

What you'll actually use data for here

Transport planning dominates. Buses, trams and trains are free to board, so the whole question becomes timing, and the national journey planner is the app you will open more than any other. Shared bikes in the capital run through their own app too.

After that: restaurant bookings, because the good places in the city fill up and walk-ins are optimistic; museum and castle opening hours, which vary more than you would like across the seasons; and hiking navigation on the Mullerthal Trail, where the waymarking is good but the rock passages are confusing. Menus and signage arrive in Luxembourgish, French or German depending on where you are standing, so a translation app earns its place in a way it does not in the capital's international restaurants.

If you are working from here, the connection is good enough for anything short of moving large files, and cafes in the Gare and Clausen districts are used to laptops.

Before you fly

Install the eSIM at home and screenshot the details. Download offline maps of the capital including the lower town, plus the Mullerthal and Ardennes if you are hiking, and pull the national transport app down before you leave.

One thing worth deciding in advance: whether your itinerary crosses into France, Belgium or Germany. If it does, sort that out before you travel rather than discovering it halfway to Trier, and set network selection to manual so your phone does not make the decision for you at the border.

Luxembourg: what to know before you land

Since March 2025 a free tram has run from Luxembourg Airport (LUX) through Kirchberg and the city centre, and all second-class buses, trams and trains in the country have been free since 2020. Your eSIM uses POST, Orange or Tango. The thing to watch is the border: free fares stop there, and on day trips your data plan does too.

Taking the tram from Findel (LUX) since March 2025

For years the only public transport from Luxembourg Airport (LUX), still widely known as Findel, was the bus. On 2 March 2025 the final section of the city's tram line opened, extending it from the Kirchberg depot through Senningerberg to a stop at the airport.

The line now runs from the airport in the north-east, across the Kirchberg plateau with its EU institutions, through the city centre and on to the Cloche d'Or business district and the national stadium in Gasperich in the south. Like all public transport in Luxembourg, it is free in standard class, so you can walk out of arrivals and board without buying anything.

What you do need is a route. Install the mobiliteit.lu app before you fly: it plans journeys across buses, trams, trains, bike-sharing and walking. Switch on your eSIM as you land so the app can show live times before you reach the platform.

A further Kirchberg extension, with two new stops, is due to open in September 2027, so allow for some building work in that area.

Free public transport, and where it stops at the border

Luxembourg became the first country to make all its public transport free on 29 February 2020. Buses, trams and second-class trains within the country cost nothing, and you don't need a ticket at all.

There are two catches:

First class on CFL trains still needs a ticket, from €3 for two hours.
Free travel ends at the border. The only exceptions are second-class trains to Athus in Belgium and Audun-le-Tiche and Volmerange-les-Mines in France. Buses and trains to Trier, Arlon, Thionville and towards Metz use paid RegioZone tickets (from €3 for two hours), and the Saarbrücken express bus has its own fares.

Paper tickets and the old mKaart card have been withdrawn, so paid tickets are bought through the CFL go app. That makes a working data connection essential for any cross-border day trip.

Remember that the eSIM is a plan for Luxembourg. Once you are in Trier, Metz or Arlon you will need a plan that covers Germany, France or Belgium, or a multi-country Europe plan.

Luxembourg's 5G: three operators and a footprint catching up

Three operators run mobile networks here: POST Luxembourg, the state-owned incumbent; Orange Luxembourg; and Tango, owned by Belgium's Proximus group. Your eSIM can use all three, so your phone simply attaches to the strongest signal.

Luxembourg is a heavy mobile data user, with EU figures putting mobile broadband uptake at about 96 percent of people, against an EU average of 87 percent. But it has been a slow starter on 5G. An EU comparison cited on Wikipedia put its 5G coverage at just 13 percent, against an EU average of 66 percent, even though most of the available 5G spectrum had been assigned. Operators have been expanding since, but in practice:

Expect 5G in Luxembourg City, Kirchberg and the larger southern towns such as Esch-sur-Alzette.
Expect 4G in the Ardennes, the Mullerthal and along the Moselle, which is plenty for maps, messaging and calls.

The capital also has free public wifi under the long-running Hotcity network, which is a handy fallback in the old town.

Seven days in Luxembourg: the capital, the Mullerthal, Vianden, Clervaux, the Moselle and Belval

A car-free week using Luxembourg's free trains, trams and buses: two days in the fortified capital, then the Mullerthal's sandstone gorges, the castles and valleys of the Éislek, the Moselle wine villages and the blast furnaces of the south.

When to go May to September is best for hiking the Mullerthal Trail and the Moselle vineyards; late September and October bring the grape harvest, while winter is cold and grey but quiet, with Christmas markets in the capital.

Day 1 Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City: the old town and the Bock Casemates

The tram runs from Luxembourg Airport (LUX) through Kirchberg to the centre, free in standard class.

Take the free tram from the airport into town. Walk the old quarter, part of the UNESCO-listed old town and fortifications: Place Guillaume II, the Grand Ducal Palace and the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Stroll the Chemin de la Corniche, the rampart walk often called the most beautiful balcony in Europe, and go down into the Bock Casemates, tunnels cut into the cliff for the fortress.

Signal 5G on POST, Orange or Tango in the city centre; underground in the Bock Casemates you will lose signal.
Day 2 Luxembourg City

Grund, Pfaffenthal and Kirchberg

Take the lift down from the old town to Grund, the riverside quarter in the Alzette valley, and visit the Neumünster Abbey cultural centre. Follow the river to Pfaffenthal and ride the glass panoramic lift back up. In the afternoon, take the funicular or tram to Kirchberg to see Fort Thüngen, its fortress museum and the MUDAM modern art museum next door.

Signal 5G on the plateau and in Kirchberg; down in the Grund and Pfaffenthal valley signal can drop to 4G with weak spots under the cliffs.
Day 3 Echternach

Echternach and the Mullerthal Trail

About an hour by bus from Luxembourg City.

Take the bus to Echternach, Luxembourg's oldest town, and visit the basilica built over the tomb of St Willibrord. Then walk a section of the Mullerthal Trail through the sandstone gorges of the Wolfsschlucht to Berdorf, squeezing through narrow passages between moss-covered rock walls. Return by bus or on foot and walk round Echternach's lake in the evening.

Signal 4G in Echternach, but in the narrow Mullerthal gorges coverage fades; near the German border your phone may switch to a German network, so check it is on a Luxembourg one.
Day 4 Vianden

Vianden castle and the Our valley

About an hour by bus via Diekirch from Echternach.

Travel north to Vianden, a small town on the Our river below a restored medieval castle, one of the largest in the region. Tour the castle's halls and chapel, then ride the chairlift up the hill opposite for the view back across the valley. Walk the Ourdall promenade along the river and visit Victor Hugo's house, where the writer stayed in 1871.

Signal 4G in Vianden town, weaker in the steep Our valley; the river is the German border, so your phone may pick up a German network.
Day 5 Luxembourg City

Clervaux and The Family of Man

Bus from Vianden via Ettelbruck to Clervaux, then about an hour by train to Luxembourg City.

Head to Clervaux in the Ardennes hills of the far north. In the castle, see The Family of Man, Edward Steichen's 1955 photographic exhibition, listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register. Walk up to the Benedictine abbey above the town for the view. Take the train back south to Luxembourg City in the late afternoon.

Signal 4G in Clervaux and along the railway, with short gaps in the Ardennes valleys; 5G returns in the capital.
Day 6 Luxembourg City

The Moselle: Remich and Schengen

About 40 minutes by bus to Remich, then 20 minutes on to Schengen.

Take the bus to Remich on the Moselle and walk the riverside promenade. Visit one of the sparkling wine cellars in Remich or Grevenmacher for a tour and tasting. Continue to Schengen, the village where the agreement on open borders was signed in 1985, and visit the European Museum by the river where France, Germany and Luxembourg meet.

Day 7 Luxembourg City

Belval's blast furnaces and departure

About 25 minutes by train from Luxembourg City to Belval-Université.

Take the train south to Belval, a former steelworks turned into a university and business district. Climb the preserved blast furnace for views over the Minett, the red-earth mining region, and learn about the steel industry that made the country rich. Return to Luxembourg City and take the tram to the airport.
