Czechia is a compact, densely settled country with three operators sharing it, so data here is rarely the problem. You get 5G in the capital and 4G across the towns, motorways and rail corridors that carry almost every visitor. The gaps are in the border forests and the mountains, and they are small.

Getting online when you land

Do the install at home, over wifi, before you travel. Then the profile is sitting on the phone waiting, and arriving becomes a matter of one switch rather than a search for a hotspot in Vaclav Havel airport's arrivals hall.

Switch the profile on after landing and enable data roaming for it. If you are coming in by train from Vienna, Berlin or Krakow instead, do it as you cross; the attachment happens quietly somewhere in the countryside and you will notice only when your map redraws.

Keep your regular SIM in for calls. Apartment hosts in Prague and Brno will ring you about key collection, and a number that does not work makes that conversation harder than it needs to be.

The networks you'll be on

Three operators carry traffic here. O2 runs 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G. T-Mobile runs 3G and 4G/LTE. Vodafone runs 3G and 4G/LTE.

The overlap between them is what makes the country feel well connected. A valley or a stretch of forest that is poor for one operator is frequently fine for another, and a roaming handset can attach to whichever is reachable rather than being tied to one footprint.

Day to day this means a 5G connection in and around Prague, dependable 4G through the rest of the inhabited country, and an occasional 3G moment in the hills. All three carry maps and messaging without complaint.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Strong: Prague in its entirety, including the outer housing estates and the airport road; Brno and the Moravian towns around it; Ostrava and the industrial north-east; Plzen, Olomouc, Liberec and Hradec Kralove; the D1 motorway spine and the main rail lines; and the tourist towns of Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary and Kutna Hora.

Patchier: the Sumava forest along the Bavarian border, where protected woodland means few masts; the Krkonose and Jeseniky mountain ranges, particularly on ridge walks and in the deeper valleys; the Bohemian Switzerland sandstone gorges near Hrensko; the Moravian Karst caves, where you are underground and will have nothing at all; and the quieter agricultural stretches of South Bohemia between villages.

Two urban specifics. Prague's metro tunnels are the least dependable place in the city for a connection, so load your route before you descend rather than assuming you can check it on the platform. And the old town's narrow lanes and heavy stone can blunt a signal that is perfectly strong on the square you just left.

What you'll actually use data for here

Transport apps do the most work. Prague's integrated public transport system sells tickets through an app, live-tracks trams and tells you which of three connections is actually running, and the national rail operator does the same for intercity travel. Buying paper tickets from a machine is possible but slower and rarely cheaper in effort.

After that: navigation on foot, because Prague's medieval street plan defeats a sense of direction that works fine everywhere else; restaurant and beer hall bookings, which are genuinely necessary in the centre on weekend evenings; and translation for menus, since Czech shares almost nothing with the languages most visitors bring with them.

You will also want a connection for the small friction points: contactless payment backups, parking zone apps in Brno and Prague, checking whether a castle is on its winter schedule, and confirming a driver if you use ride-hailing, which operates widely in the larger cities.

Before you fly

Download offline maps of Prague plus any regional area you plan to hike in. City mapping is the one you will use daily; the mountain maps are the one you will be grateful for on a ridge.

Screenshot your apartment address written in Czech, complete with the district number. Prague addresses carry two numbers on the same plaque and giving a driver the wrong one is a well-worn way to end up on the other side of the river.

Bring a power bank if you are doing long walking days. Constant navigation in a dense city eats a battery quickly, and the trams do not have chargers.

Finally, cache your rail bookings and any timed museum or castle entries as screenshots. Ticket inspectors and gate staff will take a picture on your screen, and it is one less thing to depend on a connection for.
