eSIM for Portugal

Portugal is really three trips sharing one country code: the mainland, Madeira, and the Azores. The mainland is easy and densely covered. The islands are fine where people live and abruptly empty where they hike, which is where you will be spending your time. An eSIM handles all three under one line, so the only thing you need to think about is which parts of the map deserve an offline download.

Getting online when you land

Load the profile before you fly and switch it on at the gate. Lisbon's airport sits inside the city, so you can be in a taxi within minutes of clearing passport control, and being connected before that is worth doing. Porto and Faro are similar; Funchal in Madeira takes a little longer to register on arrival but gets there.

The reason to have it live immediately is the ride apps. They operate at all the main Portuguese airports, the pickup zones are marked in the app rather than obviously signposted, and it is a much cheaper and calmer way into town than the rank. In Lisbon, the metro from the airport is the other good option and its ticketing and times are easiest to sort with data in hand.

The networks you'll be on

Your data rides on NOS, covering 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G. The 5G layer turns up around Lisbon, Porto and other larger centres; LTE is what carries the rest of the country and it is genuinely good. Video calls from a café in Alfama or Ribeira will be unremarkable, which is the highest compliment you can pay a network.

On the islands the same technologies apply but the geography argues with them. Madeira and the Azores are volcanic, steep and full of tunnels, so what you experience is less about the speed tier and more about whether a ridge is standing between you and a mast.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Lisbon and Porto are covered end to end, including the metro systems and the trams. The Algarve coast from Faro through Lagos is strong all summer, and the A1 and A2 motorways connecting the country hold signal for the whole drive. Coimbra, Évora, Braga and the smaller cities are all fine.

The mainland's thin spots are interior and upland. The Alentejo away from the towns has long quiet stretches, the Serra da Estrela loses signal on the higher roads, and Peneda Gerês national park is patchy once you are off the main routes. The Douro valley is a special case: the river bends between steep terraced walls, and coverage disappears and returns as you follow it.

Madeira is well served in Funchal and along the south coast, and much less so on the levada walks, which is precisely where you will want a map. Several levadas run through unlit tunnels with no signal at all. The Azores are connected in the main towns of each island, weaker on the crater rims, the western flanks and the inter island ferry crossings. Assume any hike above the villages on either archipelago is offline.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around, mostly. Ride hailing is well established in the mainland cities, the CP rail app handles intercity tickets, and Lisbon's hills mean you will be checking which tram or funicular saves you a climb more often than you would like to admit.

Then the things that Portugal specifically rewards: surf and swell forecasts, which decide whether Nazaré or Ericeira is worth the drive that day; restaurant reservations, because the good small places fill and many take bookings by phone or message; and trail information for the levadas and the Azorean crater walks, where trails do close after rain and the notice is usually online. Add translation for menus, since fish names in Portuguese defeat most people, and photo backup, since you will take an unreasonable number of tile photographs.

Before you fly

Install the eSIM at home and set it as your data line, keeping your usual SIM active for bank confirmations. Check the per line roaming switch is on for the travel line.

Download offline maps for every island and hiking area on your list, and save the specific levada or crater trail routes rather than relying on live navigation in a tunnel. Cache your rail and ferry bookings as images. If you are driving the Douro or crossing the Serra da Estrela, have the route saved before you start rather than after the signal goes. And on the islands, check the weather the morning of a hike instead of the night before: it changes fast, and knowing early is the whole benefit of having data at all.
