Two things define a Zambian itinerary: Victoria Falls at Livingstone, and the bush camps of the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys. Those are opposite ends of the connectivity spectrum. Livingstone and Lusaka behave like ordinary connected towns, while a camp in South Luangwa may sit hours from tarmac with a single satellite link and a generator. A travel eSIM is worth having for the half of the trip that has signal, and the other half is best planned as deliberate downtime.

Getting online when you land

Get the profile onto your phone before you leave, using home wifi, and keep it switched off until you arrive. Zambia is a country where onward transfers are often long, prearranged and time-sensitive, so being able to confirm one from the arrivals hall is worth more than it sounds.

At Kenneth Kaunda International in Lusaka, or at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula in Livingstone, enable the travel profile and turn data roaming on for it. Let it settle for a minute before assuming something is wrong. A quick airplane-mode cycle is the standard fix if it does not attach.

Your normal SIM stays in the phone with data disabled, so you keep receiving the codes tied to that number without paying for anything.

The networks you'll be on

Your data in Zambia runs through Airtel, on 4G/LTE and 5G. This is a modern buildout rather than a legacy one, and where the network reaches, the experience is good: 4G is the everyday state and 5G shows up in the better-served urban areas.

The flip side of a network built on newer generations is that when you leave its footprint there is very little to fall back on. Coverage here is closer to on or off than to a long slow taper, so plan around the boundary rather than hoping for a weak but usable connection at the edge.

Since there is only the one network, there is no benefit to manual carrier selection. Leave the phone on automatic and spend your attention on downloading things in advance instead.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Lusaka is the strongest, and the Copperbelt towns of Ndola and Kitwe are well populated and well served. Livingstone is reliable across the town, the falls viewpoints and the lodges along that stretch of the Zambezi, which is convenient because it is where most visitors spend their connected days.

The main roads carry signal in stretches. The Great East Road towards Chipata, and the run south from Lusaka to Livingstone, both give you long connected sections punctuated by empty ones.

Then the parks, which is what you came for. South Luangwa has usable signal around Mfuwe and the gate area, and much less once you are deeper in. Lower Zambezi camps are largely off the grid. Kafue is enormous and mostly unserved. Bangweulu, Liuwa Plain and the road up to Lake Tanganyika at Mpulungu are remote by any standard. Assume that a walking safari or a night drive is entirely offline, which is arguably the correct way to do one.

Camp wifi, where it exists, is usually a satellite link shared among all guests and often switched on only at certain hours. It will carry a message home. It will not carry your photo backup.

What you'll actually use data for here

Logistics dominate. Zambian trips run on a chain of transfers, charter flights, park entry arrangements and camp handovers, and most of that coordination happens over WhatsApp with people who are themselves in and out of signal. Confirming the day before, rather than the hour before, is the habit that saves you.

Mobile money and card payments are the second thing, along with checking what a park fee or a visa extension costs before you are standing at a counter.

The rest is the pleasant stuff: identifying birds, which in the Luangwa becomes a compulsion; looking up whether the falls are in high or low water for the season you have picked; and sending home a photograph of something with teeth. Actual consumption is low because you are outdoors from dawn, but the moments you do need a connection tend to be the important ones.

Before you fly

Download offline maps of Lusaka, Livingstone and every park and route on your itinerary, and grab an offline bird or mammal guide while you are at it.

Install the eSIM profile in advance, confirm the handset is unlocked, and save all camp contacts, flight references and transfer details somewhere that opens with no connection. Bring a power bank and a car charger, because camp power is often generator hours only, and tell someone at home which nights you expect to be unreachable.
