The networks you'll be on

Your phone will attach automatically to a local Botswanan network on arrival, without you needing to pick anything from a list. Confirming logistics is the dominant use. Safari itineraries chain together light aircraft transfers, road transfers and camp handovers, and a single weather delay reshuffles the rest, so you will be checking and re-checking arrangements whenever you have bars. Self-drivers use data for fuel planning, since the distance between working pumps on some routes is long enough to matter, and for reading up on park entry and campsite bookings before losing signal. Then there is the obvious: sending photographs, which after four days of no contact tends to arrive as a flood the moment you hit Maun. Some travellers also use offline wildlife and bird guides, which are worth downloading before you go.

Before you fly

Get the eSIM installed and named at home so you are not troubleshooting in a small terminal. Download offline maps for the whole northern circuit including Maun, Kasane, Chobe and the Moremi tracks, plus your route if you are self-driving, and add offline copies of any documents you might be asked to show.
