eSIM for Mozambique

Mozambique is a coastline with a country attached. Most trips here run north or south along the shore, between dive sites, dhow crossings and lodges reached down long sand roads, and almost every arrangement you make gets confirmed by message rather than by phone call. A Mozambique eSIM puts a local data line on your phone before you leave the airport, sitting alongside your usual number rather than replacing it.

Getting online when you land

Do the install while you still have a connection you trust. Adding an eSIM profile is itself a download, and an arrivals hall queue is the worst possible place to discover that. Add it at home, leave the line switched off, and forget about it until the plane is on the ground.

Landing at Maputo, Beira, Nampula or Pemba, come off airplane mode and switch the travel line on. Set it as the line your phone uses for data, allow roaming for that line specifically, then turn mobile data off on your home line while leaving its calls and texts running. Registration normally completes while you are still walking to immigration.

That first connection buys you the practical things: reopening the message thread with your lodge, pulling up a map pin for a guesthouse with no street address, checking what a transfer should cost before you agree to it at a counter, and getting directions loaded for the drive out of the city.

The networks you'll be on

Your phone attaches to Movitel, which runs 3G and 4G/LTE in Mozambique. There is no 5G in that mix, so treat 4G/LTE as the good case rather than the floor, and expect the odd drop back to 3G without warning. The handset moves between them on its own; there is no list to pick from and nothing to configure.

The honest framing is that this is a messaging, maps and booking connection rather than a streaming one. Size your expectations that way and the network will feel fine. Try to run a video call from a beach camp and it will not.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Signal follows population and the main road. Maputo holds up across the city, and Beira, Nampula, Quelimane, Xai-Xai, Inhambane and Pemba are all usable. The EN1, the long spine road that carries most overland travel here, is broadly covered where it passes towns, with real gaps in the empty stretches between them, some of them hours long.

Where it thins is predictable once you have driven it. The sand tracks out to beach camps around Tofo, Barra and Vilankulo lose signal well before you reach the water. Offshore, on the Bazaruto and Quirimbas islands, assume you are offline unless your lodge has wifi, and plan the day on that basis. The Gorongosa and Niassa interior, the Zambezi delta, and the roads inland toward the Tete and Zambezia hinterland are sparse. Northern Cabo Delgado is thin on infrastructure generally and should be treated as an offline region for planning purposes.

None of that is unusual for the country, and it does not mean the eSIM has failed. It means you should be doing your planning in town and travelling on what you downloaded there.

What you'll actually use data for here

Almost everything runs through WhatsApp. Lodges, dive centres, drivers and guides all confirm and rearrange by message, and voice notes are normal here even where the connection is too weak for a call. Keep the app installed, keep notifications on, and answer when you have bars because you may not have them again for a while.

Maps are the second thing. Addresses are unreliable outside the cities, so what you actually want is a shared pin, downloaded onto the phone before you drive. Tides and dive schedules matter on this coast more than opening hours do, and both get confirmed by message the night before.

Then the small stuff: a Portuguese phrasebook or translation app for markets and checkpoints, currency conversion before you agree to anything, checking whether the ferry or the road is the better option today, and uploading photos in the evening when you are back somewhere with a signal rather than trying to push them from the beach.

Before you fly

Install and test the profile on home wifi, and screenshot the activation confirmation so it is readable without a connection.

Download offline maps for the whole coastal strip you plan to travel, not just the towns. Save the specific pins for every lodge, dive shop and airport transfer, because you will need them exactly where you cannot search for them.

Download a Portuguese language pack for offline translation. Outside the tourist coast, English will not carry you far.

Carry a power bank and a car charger. Distances between towns are long, days are hot, and searching for signal is one of the fastest ways to flatten a battery.

Leave your home line active for calls and texts, with its mobile data switched off so nothing leaks onto it. Then let the travel line do the rest.
