eSIM for Malawi

Most Malawi itineraries line up along one spine: the main road running north to south, and the lake sitting beside it. That geography decides your connectivity too. Expect a solid connection in Lilongwe and Blantyre, a workable one in the lakeshore towns, and nothing at all on the plateaus and in the parks. Knowing which of those three situations you are in at any given moment is most of the skill.

Getting online when you land

Kamuzu International outside Lilongwe and Chileka near Blantyre are the two air gateways, and a fair number of visitors arrive overland from Zambia, Tanzania or Mozambique instead. Land borders have no wifi and no shops selling connectivity, which makes a pre-installed eSIM considerably more useful than a plan to sort something out on arrival.

Scan the QR at home, keep the line switched off until you cross, then enable data roaming for it once you are through. Immigration queues are a perfectly good moment to confirm your transfer is on its way. Keep your home number active on its own line, since lodge bookings and airline changes still tend to arrive as SMS.

If you have arrived on an evening flight, get your first night's directions saved offline before you leave the terminal building.

The networks you'll be on

Airtel is the operator listed for Malawi, providing 3G and 4G/LTE. In the cities LTE is comfortable enough for video calls and photo uploads. Away from them, expect to spend a lot of time on 3G, which handles messaging and maps but will test your patience with anything larger.

Lodge wifi exists in many places and is worth using when it is good, but it is usually shared across every guest in camp and often runs over a slow backhaul, so do not build a work day or a family video call around it without a backup. A mobile connection is frequently the better of the two options, which is an argument for having your own data rather than relying on hospitality.

Power interruptions are a normal part of life here and they affect network equipment as well as your charger. Treat a signal you have now as a signal worth using now.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Lilongwe, both the Old Town and City Centre, is well covered, as is Blantyre with neighbouring Limbe. Mzuzu in the north, Zomba, Kasungu and the towns strung along the main highway all have service. On the lake, Salima and Senga Bay, Mangochi, Monkey Bay and Nkhata Bay generally work, though quality varies with how far along the shore you are staying.

The gaps are large and predictable. The Nyika Plateau has essentially nothing across most of its grassland. Mulanje's slopes lose you as soon as you start climbing, and the top of the Zomba Plateau is patchy. Inside Liwonde, Majete and Vwaza you should assume no signal away from the camps. Cape Maclear can be inconsistent depending on where you stand. Likoma and Chizumulu islands, and the long lake crossings by ferry, are their own category of disconnected.

That is not a complaint about the country; it is a country with a lot of highland, water and protected land, and masts follow roads and towns rather than scenery.

What you'll actually use data for here

Messaging does most of the work. Lodges, transfer drivers, safari operators and tour guides are all reachable through messaging apps and often only through messaging apps, and a conversation thread is how bookings get confirmed, changed and paid attention to.

Around that: checking ferry timings on the lake, which move; bus and shuttle schedules between the cities; national park entry arrangements and activity bookings; weather during the rains, when road conditions change fast; and translation for Chichewa greetings, which are genuinely appreciated and easy to learn a few of. Mobile money is how a large part of the country pays for things, but it normally runs off a local account and a local number, so plan on cards in the cities and cash elsewhere rather than expecting to plug into it as a visitor.

Photo backups deserve a thought too. If you are shooting on safari all week, upload from town rather than hoping camp wifi will cope.

Before you fly

Do this while you still have a fast connection at home:

• Install and test the eSIM, and save the activation details as a screenshot.
• Download offline maps for the whole country, not just your first stop, including the park areas you plan to visit.
• Save every lodge, driver and operator contact with the full international code.
• Screenshot your bookings, transfer times and flight details so they read with zero bars.
• Pack a power bank and a charging cable for the vehicle, and expect at least one evening where the electricity is off and your phone is the only light in the room.
