Two mobile operators serve Mauritius, Cellplus Mobile (my.t) and Chili Mauritius, and both run 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G. On an island this compact that adds up to something unusual for the Indian Ocean: you can drive from the airport in the southeast to the northern beach towns and stay connected for essentially the whole journey. The weak spots here are not the populated coast at all; they are the forested interior and the sugar-cane back roads that cut across the middle of the island.

Getting online when you land

Have the profile installed before you board, because the transfer is the part of the trip where you most want a map running, and hotel pickups have a habit of being confirmed by message at the last minute.

Switch the plan on after landing, then wait while the phone attaches. It will pick one of the two networks by itself. Set the eSIM as your data line and leave your usual number on your primary SIM so that verification codes and calls still find you. If the connection does not come up, the fix that works almost every time is a single flight-mode toggle; a restart is the fallback. Do this at the terminal rather than in the taxi, where a lost signal in a cane field will convince you something is broken when it is not.

The networks you'll be on

Whichever of the two operators your plan attaches to, the coastal experience is much the same: 4G/LTE almost everywhere people live and stay, with 5G in the denser areas around the capital and the main towns. Your phone handles the choice; there is no APN to type and no setting to change.

What is worth understanding is how the phone behaves at the edges. When 4G weakens it will fall back to 3G rather than dropping you entirely, so a stalled map that still shows a bar is usually a slow connection rather than no connection. Give it a moment before you start toggling things. If you are somewhere genuinely dead, the bar disappears and you will know.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Strong and consistent: Port Louis and the motorway corridor, Grand Baie and the whole northern strip through Trou aux Biches and Pereybère, Flic en Flac on the west, Belle Mare and the eastern hotel belt, Curepipe and the central plateau towns, and the southeast around Mahébourg and Blue Bay.

Noticeably thinner: inside the Black River Gorges National Park, where the trails to Alexandra Falls and the Macchabée forest run under heavy canopy in a valley; the climb around Chamarel and the higher slopes behind Le Morne; and the narrow roads that cross the cane belt between the coasts, where you can pass a few kilometres without a usable connection. Boat trips also matter more than people expect: heading out to Île aux Cerfs or a dolphin trip off Tamarin keeps you online near shore, but signal tails off the further out you go.

If your itinerary includes Rodrigues, treat it as a different proposition rather than an extension of the main island. Plan on a slower, patchier connection once you are away from the main settlement, and load anything you need in advance.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around is the first thing. Public transport is buses rather than a metro network across the island, and most visitors either hire a car or rely on taxis and hotel transfers; live maps make both far less stressful, particularly on the roundabout-heavy stretches around the motorway. Ride-hailing and taxi-booking apps are used here, and having data means you can arrange a pickup from a beach rather than walking back to reception.

Then there is everything the island quietly runs on messaging: catamaran day trips, kitesurf lessons at Le Morne, table bookings in Grand Baie, and the guide who confirms tomorrow's start time at nine in the evening. Messaging apps carry most of that, and they are light on data. The heavier use is uploading photos and video, which is worth saving for hotel wifi if your plan is a small one.

Weather is the last one, and on this island it earns its place. Conditions differ sharply between the windward east and the sheltered west on the same day, so checking a forecast before you commit to a drive across the island is genuinely useful rather than a habit.

Before you fly

Confirm your handset is unlocked and supports eSIM, and install the profile while you are still on wifi at home. Leave it switched off until arrival.

Download an offline map of the whole island; it is small, and it covers you across the gorges and the cane roads where live routing struggles. Take a screenshot of your hotel name and address in case you arrive to a taxi driver and no signal, and note that many properties sit on unnamed access lanes off the coast road, so the hotel name is often more useful to a driver than a pin.

Keep data roaming disabled on your home SIM, and pack a plug adapter that suits the island's sockets so you can actually charge the phone you are relying on.
