Puerto Rico feels familiar to a lot of visitors and then quietly is not, and connectivity is one of the places that shows. The metro area around the capital is thoroughly wired; the mountainous middle and the smaller islands are a different story, and the grid that powers the towers is less dependable than the towers themselves. An eSIM gives you a line that works from arrival without touching your home plan.

Getting online when you land

Install before departure while you have wifi, then enable the line once you are on the ground at Luis Muñoz Marín. It usually attaches during the walk to baggage claim.

Getting out of the airport is where it pays off. Ride hailing runs from a designated pickup area, and rental car counters are off site with shuttle pickups that are much easier to find when you can see them on a map. If you are heading straight to the west coast or the mountains, this is also the moment to check road conditions, since a lot of the interior driving is slow and the estimate you get at the airport is the honest one.

The networks you'll be on

Coverage here comes via the Puerto Rico Telephone Company, running 3G and 4G/LTE. There is no 5G tier in play, and for practical travel it does not matter much: LTE in the metro handles navigation, calls, streaming and uploads without fuss. In the mountains and on the smaller islands you will see 3G or nothing, and the difference is usually terrain rather than technology.

Worth saying plainly: the island's electricity supply is unreliable and outages are common. Extended power cuts affect network sites as well as your hotel, so a strong signal one hour is not a promise of a strong signal the next. Treat data as excellent but not guaranteed, and keep things saved locally.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

The San Juan metro is the strong zone: Old San Juan, Condado, Santurce, Isla Verde and out through Carolina and Bayamón are all well covered. The main highways are reliable too, including the runs east toward Fajardo, west toward Aguadilla and south over the mountains to Ponce, though the descent through the cordillera has spots where you lose it.

The interior is where it gets thin. El Yunque has coverage at the entrance area and near the road, and much less on the trails and at the waterfalls below the canopy. The mountain towns of the Cordillera Central, Jayuya, Adjuntas, Utuado and the karst country around them, have service in town and long gaps on the winding roads between. The Camuy cave system is offline underground, as caves are.

Offshore, Vieques and Culebra have coverage around the settlements and the main roads, weaker on the remote beaches, and the ferry crossings from Ceiba drop out mid channel. Bioluminescent bay tours run at night in mangrove channels where you should not expect anything at all, which is fine, because the point is to look at the water rather than your phone. Rincón and Cabo Rojo are connected in town and patchier along the cliffs and salt flats.

What you'll actually use data for here

Driving is the main one. You will almost certainly rent a car, because the bus network does not go where you are going, and navigation across an island where road numbers repeat and mountain routes double back is where your data earns its keep. Live traffic around the metro is genuinely useful, since the highways there congest hard.

Ferry reservations to Vieques and Culebra are a second: they are booked online, they sell out, and the schedule shifts with weather. Then hurricane and storm tracking during the season, beach and surf conditions on the west coast, and restaurant hours, which change more than published listings suggest, so a quick message or check before driving forty minutes to a place is worth the effort.

Before you fly

Get the eSIM installed at home and make it your data line while your usual SIM stays in for bank verification texts. Toggle roaming on for the travel line only.

Download offline maps for the whole island, not just the metro, because the interior is exactly where you will lose signal and exactly where the navigation matters. Save ferry bookings and accommodation addresses as screenshots. Carry a power bank and charge it whenever you have power, given how ordinary outages are. And if you are staying somewhere rural, ask your host how they handle blackouts before you need to know; the answer tells you a lot about how the week will go.
