eSIM for Tunisia

Two thirds of a Tunisian trip usually happens within sight of the sea, and that is exactly where the networks are best developed. Coverage here runs through Tunisie and Ooredoo Tunisie, and it tracks the country's shape closely: dense along the coast from Bizerte down past Sousse and Sfax, solid through the interior towns, and progressively thinner as you head south into the salt flats and the dunes. Loading an eSIM before departure means you skip the shop-and-paperwork errand entirely and land connected.

Getting online when you land

Tunis-Carthage, Enfidha, Monastir and Djerba are the four doors into the country, and all of them put you straight into a transfer or a hire car.

Install the profile at home over wifi and leave it switched off until you land. Once you enable it, give it a minute or two to attach before assuming anything is wrong; if you are still seeing nothing at baggage reclaim, toggle airplane mode and check that data roaming is turned on for the travel line rather than for your home one. Keep your usual SIM in place for calls and verification codes with its own data disabled.

The first thing most people do with that connection is confirm a transfer. Airport taxi arrangements go much more smoothly when you can call the driver, and if you have booked a hotel car, the pickup point is easier to find by message than by wandering.

The networks you'll be on

There are two operators in play. Tunisie carries 3G and 4G/LTE. Ooredoo Tunisie carries 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G, so if your handset settles there in a city you may get noticeably faster loading.

Your phone chooses between them on its own, and it does not always choose well. If things feel sluggish in a busy place, go into network settings, switch from automatic to manual selection and try the other operator. It is a short list, so testing takes moments. Return the setting to automatic before you drive out of the city, otherwise the handset will keep searching for a network it cannot reach.

Do not read too much into the 5G question. For maps, messaging, translation and photo uploads, 4G/LTE is more than enough, and what will actually shape your day is where you are standing rather than which generation you are attached to.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Reliable: Tunis and its suburbs out to Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa and Carthage, and the whole coastal run through Hammamet, Nabeul, Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia and Sfax. Kairouan, Bizerte and the main inland towns are fine. The motorway spine and the rail corridor linking the coastal cities hold up for most of a journey, so a train between Tunis and Sousse leaves you connected for the bulk of it.

Patchy: the drive south. Once you are past Gafsa and Tozeur the towns still have service but the road between them often does not, and the causeway across Chott el Jerid is a long, flat, empty stretch where you should expect nothing. The mountain oases at Chebika, Tamerza and Mides sit in gorges, which is the whole appeal and also the reason your phone gives up. The ksour country around Tataouine and the tracks out to the film sets are sparse. Anything that involves a four wheel drive leaving a paved road toward the dunes should be treated as offline time from the moment you set off.

Two more specific cases. The pit dwellings at Matmata and the underground rooms travellers visit there are exactly as connected as any other hole in the ground, which is to say not. And in the medinas of Tunis, Sousse and Kairouan you will usually have data but a poor position: the lanes are narrow, roofed in places and walled on both sides, so your blue dot drifts. No plan fixes that, because it is satellite positioning rather than signal.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around, first. Louages are the shared intercity taxis that do most of the country's real transport, and they run from station to station rather than to a timetable, so a quick lookup of where the relevant station is saves a lot of pointing. In Tunis the metro and the TGM line to La Marsa are straightforward once you can see a map. City taxis are metered; having the route on screen makes the ride shorter.

Translation is the heaviest single use. Arabic and French share the signage, menus and museum labels, and a camera translation app turns all of it readable instantly. Download the French pack before you go south, where you will want it most and have it least.

After that: booking desert excursions and hammam or restaurant tables, checking opening hours, which shift around religious holidays and the summer heat, and the weather, which in this country means both coastal wind for the kitesurfers and genuinely serious temperatures inland in summer.

Before you fly

Make sure the handset is unlocked and eSIM capable, and install the profile before you travel rather than on airport wifi.

Download offline maps for the south specifically, including the routes to Douz, Tozeur and Tataouine, and cache the medina layouts of any city you plan to walk through. Save your hotel name and address as a screenshot in Arabic and Latin script if you can get both, because handing a phone to a driver works better than pronouncing it.

Bring a power bank. Desert day trips are long, heat drains batteries quickly, and the vehicle charger will be busy with somebody else's phone.
