The Seychelles that visitors actually see is three islands: Mahe, Praslin and La Digue. Those three are covered well enough that you can work from a beach if you insist on it. The other hundred or so islands scattered across a vast stretch of the Indian Ocean are a different proposition entirely, and some of them have no mobile service at all. Buy your eSIM for the inner islands and treat anything further out as a genuine disconnection.

Getting online when you land

Get the profile installed at home, before the flight. Seychelles International sits just south of Victoria on Mahe, and most arrivals continue straight to a hotel transfer, a ferry or a domestic hop, none of which are improved by standing in the terminal looking for wifi.

Come out of airplane mode after landing and let the phone attach. When a network appears but data does not move, check that roaming is switched on for the travel line, then check which line your phone has assigned to data. Resorts here do provide wifi, though it is often shared across a lot of guests and slows noticeably in the evening, so the eSIM tends to become your reliable connection rather than your backup one.

The networks you'll be on

Roaming connects you to Cable and Wireless, with 3G and 4G/LTE available. In Victoria, along the developed coasts of Mahe and around the main settlements on Praslin, 4G is normal and comfortable. Elsewhere the phone will sit on 3G, which is fine for maps, chat, email and uploading a reasonable number of photographs.

There is one network in play rather than several, so switching operators is not a tool available to you. When a connection hangs, force the handset to search again with a short airplane mode cycle. That recovers more stalled connections than anything else you can do from the settings menu.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Mahe is the strongest of the three. Victoria, Beau Vallon, Eden Island, the airport road and the east coast strip all hold a signal reliably. Praslin is well served around Cote d'Or, Baie Sainte Anne and the ferry jetty. La Digue, which you will explore by bicycle, has coverage through La Passe and along the main coastal track.

The gaps are granite. These islands are built from enormous rock formations, and Mahe's spine rises steeply through the Morne Seychellois range, which blocks signal decisively. Cross island roads, the forest trails, the walk down to Anse Major and the more isolated southern bays are all places where the bars vanish and reappear according to which way the mountain is facing. On La Digue, the path around to Anse Cocos and Grand Anse loses service. Vallee de Mai on Praslin is patchy under the palm canopy.

Water is the other gap. The ferry between the islands passes through stretches with little or no signal, snorkelling and dive boats lose it once they are properly offshore, and the outer islands, including the Aldabra and Amirantes groups, are far enough away that you should assume no mobile coverage whatsoever. If your itinerary includes a liveaboard or an outer island lodge, plan communication around whatever that operator provides, not around your phone.

What you'll actually use data for here

Logistics, more than anything. Getting between three islands means ferry bookings, schedule checks and occasional domestic flight changes, all handled online and all subject to weather. A live connection is how you find out that an afternoon crossing has moved.

Beyond that: hire car navigation on Mahe, where the mountain roads are narrow and the junctions are unforgiving; restaurant bookings, since the good places on Praslin and La Digue are small and fill up; tide times before a snorkel or a walk out to a sandbar; weather for the trade wind seasons, which genuinely change which beaches are usable; and photo uploads, which is where most of your data will actually go given what the light does here around sunset.

Bird and marine watchers should note that identification apps often need a connection unless you download their databases in advance.

Before you fly

Confirm the handset is unlocked and supports eSIM, install and label the profile at home, and keep your everyday number on for bank verification with its own data disabled.

Download offline maps for all three inner islands, including the walking trails, before you leave the airport wifi or your first hotel. The trails are precisely where coverage stops, and a stalled map on a steep granite path is a real inconvenience.

Save ferry confirmations, lodge contacts and transfer details to the device rather than trusting an inbox. Bring a power bank for boat days. And if the trip extends to the outer islands, be realistic that this is a place where you will be offline, and tell people at home so before you go quiet.
