eSIM for Kenya

Most Kenya trips split cleanly in two: connected days in Nairobi or on the coast, and safari days where the signal is somebody else's problem. An eSIM handles the first half properly and lets you prepare sensibly for the second. Set it up before you fly, use the city stretch to download everything you might want in the bush, and go into the parks knowing which of your apps still work without a connection.

Getting online when you land

Do the installation at home. It takes a couple of minutes on wifi and turns into a headache if you attempt it in an arrivals queue. Keep the profile switched off until you land at Jomo Kenyatta or Moi International, then enable it and let the phone register while you queue at immigration.

Leave your home SIM in place on voice only and make the Kenyan profile your data line. This matters more here than in most places, because a single stray background sync on an unmanaged home line during a two week trip is exactly the roaming bill people come back complaining about. If the eSIM does not attach within a few minutes, toggle airplane mode; if that fails, select the network manually in settings rather than deleting the profile.

The networks you'll be on

Data here rides on Airtel, which runs 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G. In Nairobi and Mombasa you will spend most of your time on LTE with 5G appearing in denser areas, and that is comfortably enough for video calls, uploads and heavy navigation.

Being straight about it: Airtel is not the largest network in the country, and in remote areas the difference shows. Along the main highways and in towns you will be fine. In a conservancy three hours from the nearest tarmac, coverage is a matter of where the nearest mast happens to be, and no plan changes that. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Nairobi is well covered end to end, from the CBD out through Westlands, Karen and the residential suburbs. Mombasa, Diani, Nakuru, Naivasha, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nanyuki and Malindi are all solid. The Nairobi to Mombasa highway and the railway that parallels it keep a workable signal across much of the route, with gaps in the drier middle section.

Inside the parks it varies enormously. Lodges frequently sit within reach of a mast, or run their own wifi, so evenings back at camp are usually connected even when the day was not. Out on game drives across the Mara plains, in Amboseli, in Tsavo and especially up in Samburu and the northern drylands, expect long stretches of nothing. The same applies on the Mount Kenya trails and in the Aberdares, where terrain does the blocking. Lamu, being an island town, holds signal in the settled parts and thins on the water and the outer beaches.

What you'll actually use data for here

Ride-hailing in Nairobi is the obvious one, and it is the difference between a predictable fare and a negotiation in traffic on Mombasa Road. Mobile money dominates everyday payments across Kenya, though as a visitor you will mostly get by on cards and cash, so budget for that rather than assuming your phone becomes your wallet.

The safari-specific use is downloading before you go: offline maps of the reserve, your lodge's location pin, the driver's number, the flight details for any light aircraft transfer. Wildlife identification apps that work offline are genuinely enjoyable in a vehicle. Back in coverage, it is photo uploads, weather for the coast, checking whether a park gate closes at dusk, and messaging your guide to confirm the morning pickup time.

Before you fly

Download offline maps covering Nairobi, your coastal base and every reserve on the itinerary. Save lodge locations as pins while you still have data, because reserve entrances are rarely where a search suggests they are.

Screenshot everything: flight confirmations, park bookings, transfer details, your guide's contact. A screenshot survives a dead zone in a way a webpage does not. Carry a power bank and, if you can, a car charger, because game drives run long and vehicle sockets are not guaranteed.

Check your handset is carrier unlocked, install the eSIM before departure, and verify the data line points at it once you arrive. One last practical note: dust is the real enemy of a phone on safari more than anything else, so keep it in a bag rather than on the seat, and clean the charging port before it stops taking a cable.
