The fix is manual: open network selection, pick the Liechtenstein operator by hand instead of leaving the phone on automatic, and the wandering stops.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Buses, mostly. The Liechtenstein Bus network is how you move between villages and up to Malbun, and live departure times matter more than a map when you are standing at a shelter in Schaan deciding whether to wait or walk. Evening services thin out, so checking the last bus down from the mountain becomes a day-one habit.

Beyond that: opening hours for the Kunstmuseum and the Landesmuseum in Vaduz, timed tickets, mountain forecasts that change faster than valley ones, and the Swiss rail app for your return to Zurich. Menus, castle viewing rules and trail conditions all live online rather than on signage. Card payments are normal in shops and restaurants, and phone wallets behave the way they do at home.

Translation barely comes into it. German is the working language and English is understood in anything tourist-facing.

Before you fly

Get the eSIM installed and screenshot the QR code and activation details, so a wiped or replaced phone becomes an inconvenience instead of a disaster. Confirm your handset supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked: a five-minute check at home, an unsolvable problem at Buchs station.

After that, download offline maps covering the whole principality plus Malbun and the ridge trails, write down your accommodation address, and install the bus and Swiss rail apps before departure.
