About this eSIM

Jersey is a Crown Dependency with its own government, its own laws and its own telecoms market. It is not part of the United Kingdom and it is not in the European Union, which is why a weekend there can produce a phone bill that a weekend in Normandy or Cornwall would not. A travel eSIM removes that surprise. The island is compact, so one profile comfortably covers everything from St Helier to the north coast cliffs.

Getting online when you land

Jersey Airport sits in the middle of the west of the island, a small and quick terminal where you will be through and outside in minutes. Enable the profile while you are still on the aircraft so it has found a network by the time you are at the taxi rank or the bus stop.

Ferry arrivals into St Helier come from the south coast of England and from St Malo and Granville in France. Switch on before you sail rather than during the crossing, because mid Channel service is unreliable and a phone trying to register a new profile while it hops between whatever it can reach tends to stall. The harbour is a better place to check it is working than the middle of the water.

Install the eSIM at home over your own connection first. After that, allow roaming for the travel profile, keep your usual line switched on for calls and codes, and set the eSIM as the line your data runs on.

The networks you'll be on

Jersey runs its own mobile market rather than being an extension of the British one, and your profile will attach to a local network without you choosing. The island is small and well built out, so the technical detail rarely becomes your problem.

One local quirk is worth knowing. The French coast is close, and along the east side of the island a handset can occasionally latch onto a network across the water instead of a Jersey one. If your status bar shows an operator you were not expecting, that is what has happened. Turning automatic network selection off, scanning, and picking a Jersey network by hand puts you back where you should be.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

St Helier is thoroughly covered, from the waterfront and the marina through the town centre, and so are St Brelade's Bay, Gorey under the castle, St Aubin, and the built up parishes in between. The main roads across the island hold service, and so do the big beaches, which is most of what a visitor needs.

Thin spots are few but real. The north coast cliff path between Grosnez and Rozel drops in and out as you move through the bays, and the steeper wooded valleys running down to the sea, such as those behind Bonne Nuit and Bouley Bay, sit below the surrounding land. Underground sites are naturally dead, so the wartime tunnel complexes and the passage grave at La Hougue Bie will cut you off while you are inside. Out on the water, boat trips to the Écréhous and the Minquiers reefs, and the low tide walk out to Seymour Tower, should all be treated as offline.

That last one deserves emphasis. Jersey has one of the largest tidal ranges anywhere, and the sea comes in across the flats faster than people expect.

What you'll actually use data for here

Tide tables, more than you would guess. The causeways to Elizabeth Castle and out towards Corbière are walkable only around low water, the moon shaped bay at St Ouen changes completely with the tide, and any guided low tide walk depends on getting the timing right. Checking a live table beats trusting a printed one you saw yesterday.

The island bus network is the practical way to get around without a car, and its live times and route planning sit in an app. Ferry and flight status matters, since weather does disrupt sailings. Beyond that: booking a table in St Helier, checking whether the surf at St Ouen is worth carrying a board down for, finding which of the green lanes are open to cyclists, and looking up opening times for the wildlife park, the castles and the seasonal beach cafes.

Before you fly

Install the profile and confirm it is active and selected for data before you leave home, with your usual number still switched on for voice.

Download an offline map of the island; it is small enough that the download is trivial and it covers the valleys and the cliff path. Save your accommodation address and any ferry booking reference somewhere readable without a connection. If your trip continues to Guernsey, to France or to the British mainland, check what covers you there, because a Jersey plan is for Jersey. And confirm your phone supports eSIM before buying, which takes a moment in your settings and avoids the one problem you cannot fix on arrival.

Jersey's ETA from 23 April 2026: sort it on your phone

Jersey now runs its own electronic travel authorisation (ETA), aligned with the UK system. The Government of Jersey says that from 23 April 2026 most visitors need an ETA or a visa, typically including nationals of European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia.

Key details:

It costs £20 and lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, for visits of up to six months at a time.
You apply on GOV.UK through the UK ETA app or the online form. It takes about ten minutes and needs your passport, an email address, a card or Apple Pay or Google Pay, and a photo of your face. Decisions usually arrive by email within three working days.
Every traveller needs their own, including children.
You do not need one if you already hold a UK, Guernsey or Isle of Man ETA, or if you are British or Irish.
French nationals on a day trip with a French national ID card are exempt, as are some French school groups.

Apply before you leave home, not on the ferry from St Malo. The app needs a stable connection to scan your passport chip and take a photo, and a decision can take days.

JT, Sure and Airtel-Vodafone: Jersey's mobile market

JT, formerly Jersey Telecom, is the island's incumbent and owns most of its telecoms infrastructure. Regulator figures for 2020 gave JT about 52% of mobile customers, with Airtel-Vodafone on 24% and Sure on 23%. Sure has since bought Airtel-Vodafone's Channel Islands business, which it completed in November 2024. Your eSIM connects to JT, which now markets 5G on the island.

A few local details that help:

Jersey uses the UK numbering plan and the +44 code. Landlines start 01534, and mobile numbers begin 07797 for JT, 07700 for Sure and 07829 for Airtel-Vodafone. That makes Jersey numbers look British, but Jersey is a Crown Dependency, outside both the UK and the EU, and UK operators set their own roaming terms for it.
4G licences have required at least 2 Mbit/s to 95% of the population 90% of the time, a target met in 2016. Expect solid coverage across the parishes rather than the patchiness found in some rural parts of mainland Britain.
The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority announced in January 2026 that plans were underway to support enhanced mobile services, so expect continued upgrades.

Jersey Airport (JER) is in the parish of St Peter, about 4 nautical miles west-north-west of St Helier, and handled 1,453,675 passengers in 2025. Most routes are to the UK:

easyJet: London airports, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.
British Airways: London Gatwick and Heathrow.
Loganair: Bristol, Exeter and Southampton.
Aurigny: Guernsey.
Seasonal flights include Jet2 to northern England, and Aer Lingus, KLM and Lufthansa to Dublin, Amsterdam and Munich.

On a short island flight, the main phone jobs are boarding passes and delay alerts. Fog can disrupt Channel Islands flights, so turn on notifications in your airline's app and save boarding passes to your wallet so they open without data at the gate.

Money is the other surprise. Jersey uses pound sterling but issues its own banknotes and coins, including a £1 note not issued in the UK. Jersey currency circulates alongside UK money on the island, but it is not legal tender elsewhere. UK shops and banks may accept or exchange it, but it is easier to spend it before you leave or pay by card. Mains power is 230V, and Jersey imports around 95% of its electricity from France.

Seven days in Jersey: castles, cliff paths and tidal walks

A week on the largest Channel Island for walkers and history lovers, using St Helier as a base: Elizabeth Castle and Mont Orgueil, the Occupation tunnels, the north coast cliff path, St Ouen's Bay and the low-tide walks that Jersey's huge tidal range makes possible.

When to go May to September for warm weather, sea swimming and the full timetable of guided low-tide walks; spring tides around new and full moons give the biggest low-tide areas, and since April 2026 most visitors other than British and Irish citizens need an ETA (or a visa) before travelling.

Day 1 St Helier

St Helier and Elizabeth Castle

Jersey Airport is about 20 minutes by bus or taxi from St Helier; ferries from Poole, Portsmouth and St Malo arrive at Elizabeth Harbour.

Start at the Jersey Museum and Victorian House to get your bearings, then browse the Central Market's Victorian ironwork hall. Walk out to Elizabeth Castle across the causeway at low tide, or ride the amphibious castle ferry when the tide is in. Explore the fortress and the Hermitage rock, then walk back along the waterfront to the Maritime Museum, which also displays the embroidered panels made to tell the story of the Occupation.

Signal JT 4G is strong in St Helier, with 5G in parts of town. Check the tide tables before walking to the castle, as the causeway floods quickly.
Day 2 St Helier

Gorey, Mont Orgueil and La Hougue Bie

About 20 to 30 minutes by bus from St Helier to Gorey.

Take the bus east to Gorey and spend the morning at Mont Orgueil Castle, the medieval fortress above the harbour, with views to the French coast on clear days. In the afternoon, visit La Hougue Bie, where a Neolithic passage grave about 6,000 years old lies beneath a mound topped by a medieval chapel, with a German Occupation bunker alongside.

Day 3 St Helier

Jersey War Tunnels and Hamptonne

About 15 minutes by bus or car from St Helier.

Spend the morning at the Jersey War Tunnels in St Lawrence, an underground hospital complex dug by forced labourers during the German Occupation, which now tells the story of island life from 1940 to 1945. In the afternoon, visit the Hamptonne Country Life Museum, a restored farm estate with buildings from the 15th century onwards, then walk the green lanes back towards St Lawrence.

Day 4 St Helier

The north coast cliff path

Buses from St Helier reach Bouley Bay and Grève de Lecq in about 25 to 35 minutes.

Walk a section of the north coast cliff path, Jersey's most dramatic stretch of coast. A good day runs from Bouley Bay west past the Devil's Hole blowhole to Grève de Lecq, then on towards Plémont. Paths climb steeply between headlands, so wear proper shoes and carry water. Catch a bus back to St Helier from Grève de Lecq or Plémont.

Signal Mostly good 4G on the cliffs, but signal can fade in the deep bays such as Bouley Bay and Grève de Lecq.
Day 5 St Helier

St Ouen's Bay and La Corbière

Head to the far west. Walk or cycle along St Ouen's Bay, an 8 km sweep of sand popular with surfers, past the German bunkers of the Atlantic Wall. Continue south to La Corbière Lighthouse, reached on foot by a causeway at low tide. Visit the restored Strongpoint Corbière bunker, then finish at Grosnez Castle's ruins in the north-west corner for sunset.

Day 6 St Helier

Jersey Zoo and a guided low-tide walk

Jersey Zoo is about 20 minutes by bus from St Helier.

Spend the morning at Jersey Zoo in Trinity, founded by Gerald Durrell to breed endangered species. In the afternoon, join a guided intertidal walk on the south-east coast, such as the walk out across the seabed to Seymour Tower at low tide. These walks are tide-dependent and must be booked ahead, so plan this day around the tide table and swap with another day if needed.

Day 7 St Helier

St Brelade's Bay and departure

St Brelade's Bay is about 20 minutes from St Helier and 10 minutes from the airport.

Spend your last morning at St Brelade's Bay, one of the island's most sheltered beaches. Visit the Fishermen's Chapel beside St Brelade's Church, with medieval wall paintings, then walk the coast path round to Portelet Bay and its small tower on an islet. Head to the airport or harbour in good time, as St Helier traffic can be slow in summer.
