Indonesia is not one destination, it is thousands of islands strung across three time zones, and connectivity tracks that geography exactly. Java and Bali are dense, urban and thoroughly wired; the further east and the further off the main shipping and flight routes you go, the more your phone becomes a camera with a map on it. Knowing which half of that trip you are on is the whole skill.

Getting online when you land

Whether you come in at Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta, Bali's Ngurah Rai or through Batam by ferry from Singapore, turn the profile on before you clear immigration so it has registered by the time you are outside. The airport exits at both major airports are a scrum of drivers, and the calm move is to already have a ride app open rather than negotiating at the kerb with no data.

Add the profile to your handset before departure, using your home connection. Verification loops are the trap here: hotel and ride apps often want to confirm a login the moment you first open them in a new country, and doing that with no data and no local wifi is a slow, annoying start.

Two settings to check once it is live. Roaming permission must be on for the travel profile, since it registers as a visitor rather than a domestic line. And your usual number should stay switched on for calls and codes, because you will still want it while your data runs over the eSIM.

The networks you'll be on

Coverage on this profile comes through Telkomsel, which runs 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G in Indonesia. It is the operator with the broadest national footprint, which matters a great deal in a country where reach is the scarce resource rather than raw speed.

What that looks like in practice: fast service in the cities and the built up tourist belts, dependable 4G along the main roads of Java, Bali and southern Sumatra, and a fallback to slower connections as you move into the outer islands. Where coverage exists in remote Indonesia it will often be a basic connection rather than a fast one, which is fine for a message, a map tile or a ferry timetable, and not fine for uploading a dive video.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Jakarta and greater Jabodetabek are comprehensively covered, as are Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Bandung, Semarang and Yogyakarta, plus the toll roads and rail lines connecting them across Java. Bali is well served across the whole southern arc from Kuta and Seminyak through Canggu and up to Ubud, and along the east coast to Amed and Sanur. Batam and Bintan, sitting close to Singapore, are solid too.

Signal degrades in a pattern you can predict. Water crossings are the first: fast boats to the Gilis, Nusa Penida and Lembongan, ferries to Lombok, and any longer inter island passage will drop you mid channel and pick you up on approach. Highland interiors are the second: the crater rims of Bromo and Ijen, the Bali mountain villages behind Munduk, Sumatra's Lake Toba backroads and the Mentawai islands are all thin. Third is the eastern and interior frontier, where Flores away from Labuan Bajo, the Komodo park boat routes, Tana Toraja in Sulawesi, the Mahakam river upstream of Samarinda, and Raja Ampat in Papua are best planned as offline days.

Dense jungle, rice terrace valleys and steep volcanic ridges all shadow signal even a short distance from a covered road. If you have a liveaboard or a multi day trek on the itinerary, assume no service for its duration and set expectations with people at home before you go quiet.

What you'll actually use data for here

Ride hailing is the daily essential. The big Indonesian superapps handle motorbike taxis, cars, food delivery and small parcel runs, and in traffic heavy Jakarta a motorbike is often the only sensible way to cross town. Ordering food to a guesthouse in Ubud or a coworking space in Canggu is completely normal and happens entirely on the phone.

Beyond that, transport logistics eat data: checking whether the fast boat is running in rough weather, rebooking a domestic flight after a volcanic ash delay, and finding which ferry terminal your ticket actually departs from. Digital wallets and QR payments are widespread in the cities and much less so in villages, so you will be checking balances and finding ATMs online. Divers and surfers watch swell and tide forecasts obsessively. And translation gets used constantly outside tourist areas, since English drops off quickly once you are away from the coast strips.

Before you fly

Load the eSIM at home and open your phone's mobile data settings to confirm it is present, active and selected for data. Keep your home line for voice so your own number still reaches you.

Download offline maps for each island you are visiting individually, since a single regional download will not cover an archipelago. Save your accommodation pins, boat and flight confirmations, and any dive or trek operator's phone number in a form you can read with no signal. Take a power bank and a plug adapter, because long boat days and full day scooter rides drain a phone quickly and charging points on the water are rare. Finally, verify your device supports eSIM before you buy a plan, and if you are travelling with a second, older phone as a beach handset, check that one too.
