Brunei is two separate pieces of land wrapped by Malaysian Sarawak, and almost everyone lives along the coastal strip in between. That concentration works in your favour: the populated belt from Muara through Bandar Seri Begawan to Seria and Kuala Belait is compact and well served, and you can cross most of it in a couple of hours. The rainforest interior, which is most of the country by area, is a different matter, and worth planning around if Temburong is on your list.

Getting online when you land

Brunei International Airport sits just a few minutes from the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan, which makes it one of the quicker arrivals in the region. Install the eSIM before departure and enable it once you are on the ground, ideally before you leave the terminal, since taxis here are limited in number and you may want to arrange transport or check a hotel address rather than wait. If you are arriving overland from Miri in Sarawak or from Limbang, allow your phone a few minutes at the crossing to release the Malaysian network and pick up a Bruneian one. Ferry arrivals at Muara from Labuan work the same way.

The networks you'll be on

Your handset registers on a local Bruneian network automatically when you switch the eSIM on; there is no operator list to work through and no meaningful choice to make. Along the coastal strip where the population and the infrastructure are, data behaves like it does in any well developed small country, which is to say unremarkable and reliable for maps, messaging, video calls and streaming. What you should not do is extrapolate that inland. Coverage here is built around where people live and drive, and the interior has very few of either, so the network's reach ends more or less where the road network does.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Bandar Seri Begawan is comfortably covered, including the waterfront and the stilt village of Kampong Ayer across the river, where the water taxis run constantly and people are on their phones the whole way. The same holds for Jerudong, Tutong, Seria, Kuala Belait and Muara, and along the coastal highway and the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge that now links the main district to Temburong. Once in Temburong itself, the picture changes: the small towns have service but the national park does not in any dependable way. The canopy walkway, the river boat ride up to it and the forest trails are effectively offline, which most visitors find is part of the appeal. Ulu Belait and the deep interior are the same, and mangrove boat trips can lose signal well before you notice.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around is the main one. Public transport is thin and taxis are not something you hail on the street, so ride-hailing through a local app is how most visitors move between the mosque, the museums, the night market and their hotel, and it needs a live connection. Mapping matters more than you would expect for a small capital, because addresses use a district and building number system that is not intuitive to visitors. Prayer times shape opening hours, particularly on Fridays when much of the country closes for a long midday break, and people check them on their phones. Beyond that it is the usual: messaging, translation, and posting photographs of a mosque lit up at dusk over the water.

Before you fly

Add and label the profile at home over a stable connection, and leave your home line on for calls and texts only. Download an offline map of the whole country, which is small enough to be a trivial file, and include Temburong if you are going. Save your hotel details and any tour bookings as screenshots, since your Temburong guide will likely be the last person you can message before you lose signal for the day. Carry a power bank for humid days when the screen is at full brightness. One thing to keep in mind: this plan covers Brunei only, so a day trip across the border into Sarawak, or a drive that transits Malaysian territory, will leave you without data until you are back inside Brunei.
