Weather runs the Faroe Islands, and weather changes plans. Fog closes a viewpoint, a ferry sailing shifts, a hike that looked obvious at breakfast becomes a bad idea by ten. Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Solid: Torshavn and the surrounding villages on Streymoy, Klaksvik, Runavik and the Eysturoy towns, Sorvagur and the airport area, and the main road network including the approaches to the tunnels.

Where it goes: inside the subsea tunnels themselves, and inside the older single lane mountain tunnels, you have nothing at all, so set up navigation before you enter one. Hiking is the bigger consideration. The trail out to the Kallur lighthouse on Kalsoy, the climb above Sorvagsvatn, the ridge walks around Slaettaratindur and the paths above Saksun and Gjogv all pass through long stretches with no service, often in cloud. Mykines, reached by boat or helicopter, is thin and depends heavily on the weather that decides whether you get back the same day at all.

Ferry crossings drop mid channel and pick up again on the far side. Sailings to Suduroy and the smaller islands should be treated as offline time.

Download offline maps of the whole archipelago. It is a small area and the file is tiny, and it will save you on a mountain road in fog.

Forecasts, constantly. Faroese weather is local to an almost absurd degree, with one valley clear and the next one shut in, and checking conditions before committing to a drive or a hike is simply how people travel here. Sailing and helicopter schedules move with the same weather, and knowing early is the difference between a good day and a wasted one.

Ferry and tunnel logistics come next. Some crossings run to a limited timetable, seats on the smaller boats fill, and a plan that assumed you could turn up may need rebuilding on the spot. Several popular hiking routes cross private farmland and arrangements for access vary, so it is worth checking the current situation online rather than arriving and finding out.

Beyond that: maps on roads that hairpin without warning, photo backup because this is a place people photograph relentlessly, and messaging home. Data consumption tends to be low here overall. You will spend more time looking out of the window than at a screen, which is the correct ratio.

Before you fly

Check your handset supports eSIM and is unlocked, then screenshot the QR code and activation details so a flat battery cannot strand you.

Keep your home SIM installed with data switched off. Card verification codes still land there, and the Faroes run heavily on card payment, so a card that will not authenticate is a genuine inconvenience.

Download offline maps and save your accommodation as a pin rather than an address, since several villages share names with places on other islands. Bring a power bank and something waterproof to keep the phone in; wind driven rain here arrives sideways.
