Cyprus gives you 5G in the coastal cities and a single operator carrying all of it, which makes the coverage picture unusually simple to reason about. The island's population lives along the south coast and that is where the network is concentrated. The Troodos massif in the middle and the wild Akamas in the west are the exceptions.

Getting online when you land

Load the profile onto your handset before departure, over your home wifi, then leave it dormant. Arriving at Larnaca or Paphos and only then trying to download a profile is the one avoidable mistake, because the download itself needs a connection you do not yet have.

Once you are on the ground, enable the profile and switch on data roaming against it. It should register within a minute or two. Both airports sit close to their cities and you will have a working map before the bus or the hire car pulls out.

Keep your normal SIM active for voice. Cyprus runs on phone calls for anything practical: villa keys, boat trips, restaurant confirmations, the man with the spare car park space.

The networks you'll be on

Epic is the operator here, offering 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G.

Because there is one network rather than several, the coverage map is the coverage map. There is no competitor's tower to rescue you in a village where this one is weak. The upside is predictability: what works today in a given spot will work tomorrow, and the strong areas are strong consistently.

You will find 5G around the main urban centres and 4G across the rest of the inhabited south, with 3G surfacing in mountain villages and on the emptier stretches. Even the 3G tier is fine for navigation and messaging; it is video and large uploads that suffer.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Consistently good: Larnaca and the salt lake road, Limassol and its long seafront, Paphos including Kato Paphos and the harbour, Nicosia inside and around the Venetian walls, Ayia Napa and Protaras, and the A1 and A6 motorways that string them together. Paralimni, Polis and the larger inland towns are covered too.

Weaker: the Troodos mountains. The road up to Mount Olympus, the painted churches scattered through the Solea and Marathasa valleys, and villages like Kakopetria, Omodos and Platres sit in terrain that blocks signal, and you will lose and regain it repeatedly on the drive.

Thin to none: the Akamas peninsula beyond Lara Bay, where the track deteriorates and the towers stop; the Avakas gorge; parts of the Karpas approach; and the sea on longer boat excursions.

One planning point that catches people out. Northern Cyprus operates on a separate set of networks from the Republic, so do not assume your data simply continues when you cross the Green Line at Ledra Street or a vehicle checkpoint. Treat a day trip to Northern Cyprus as an offline day unless you have specifically arranged otherwise, and download your maps and directions beforehand.

What you'll actually use data for here

Driving support. Cyprus drives on the left, road names are signposted in both Greek and Latin script, and mountain routes fork constantly with no obvious main road, so live navigation is doing real work rather than being a nicety.

Beyond that: beach and weather checks, particularly in shoulder season when the wind decides whether a boat trip runs; booking tavernas and beach loungers in Ayia Napa and Protaras during peak weeks; archaeological site opening hours, which change seasonally and are not always posted where you would expect; and translation, though English is very widely spoken and you will need it more for reading Greek signage than for talking to people.

If you are here for a wedding or a longer stay, you will also lean on data for the mundane admin of car hire excess, apartment check-in codes and grocery delivery, all of which are handled online.

Before you fly

Cache offline maps of the whole island rather than a single city. It is one small download and it covers every mountain village turnoff you did not plan on taking.

Screenshot villa or hotel directions along with the owner's number. Addressing in Cypriot villages is loose, and a photo of the written directions beats a search result.

Take a car charger. Between navigation, photos and a handset working harder in the mountains, a full day of driving will flatten a battery.

Finally, if the north is on your itinerary, sort out your maps, your route and your insurance paperwork in advance while you are still on a solid connection. Doing it standing at a checkpoint with no data is exactly the scenario worth avoiding.
