About this eSIM

Belize divides neatly into three trips: the cayes, the coast, and the jungle interior. Mobile data behaves differently in each. The islands and coastal towns are well enough served that you will barely notice the network; inland, once you leave the towns for the forest reserves and cave systems, coverage becomes something you plan around rather than rely on. An eSIM covers the connected two thirds properly, and the useful skill is knowing which third you are in.

Getting online when you land

Philip S. W. Goldson International sits outside Belize City, and for a lot of visitors it is a transit point rather than a destination: a puddle-jumper flight out to San Pedro or Placencia, or a shuttle west to San Ignacio. Those onward legs are where a working connection pays for itself, because small-plane schedules shift and shuttle drivers communicate by phone.

Install the profile before you travel. On landing, switch the travel line on, allow it to use data, set it as your default data line, and keep your home number attached for messages. Give the handset a minute or two to register. If nothing comes through, one airplane-mode cycle is the standard fix, and there is wifi in the terminal if you need to re-check anything.

The networks you'll be on

There is one host network in play, DigiCell, operating 3G and 4G/LTE. Set your expectations at 4G in the populated areas, 3G in the margins, and nothing faster anywhere. That is entirely adequate for what you will be doing: navigation, messaging, booking, photo uploads and video calls from a hotel or a dock.

The single-network reality means the manual operator switch trick does not apply here. When data misbehaves, restart the handset, cycle airplane mode, and step outside if you are under a thatched roof or inside a concrete lodge building. Most hotels, dive shops and beach bars run wifi, and on the cayes that wifi is often the better option for anything heavy.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Belize City, Belmopan, San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Dangriga, Punta Gorda, Corozal and Orange Walk all have workable service, and the Northern, Western and Hummingbird highways hold a connection for most of their length. San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are both well covered through the settled parts of the islands, which is where you will spend your time anyway. Placencia village and the road down the peninsula are fine.

Then it thins, sometimes abruptly. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, the tracks out to Caracol and the Chiquibul are remote and largely without service. Jungle lodges in Cayo and Toledo often sit outside coverage entirely and run on wifi from their own satellite or fixed connection, so ask before you assume. Cave trips, including the river caves and the dry cave systems, are offline by definition. The northern and southern lagoons, the mangrove channels, and the boat runs between the mainland and the cayes lose signal partway across. Out on the barrier reef, at the atolls and on the long day trips to the Blue Hole, you should expect nothing.

One more thing worth stating plainly: a Belize plan stops at the Belize border. The popular day trip across to Tikal puts you in Guatemala on Guatemalan networks, and a country plan will not follow you there.

What you'll actually use data for here

Coordination with small operators. Almost everything here is booked with an individual or a small business rather than a platform: the dive shop, the caving guide, the shuttle driver, the boat over to the caye. Most of them work by WhatsApp, so messaging apps carry more of your trip than any website will.

Weather and sea state matter next. Whether a snorkel trip runs, whether the crossing to Caye Caulker is going to be rough, whether the afternoon rain in Cayo will close a river cave: these are morning checks that change your plan. Hurricane season from summer into autumn makes tropical weather tracking a daily habit.

Beyond that, maps for driving the highways and finding unsigned turnoffs, currency and price checks, uploading photos when you are back within range, and calls home in the evenings. Because so much of the day may be offline, actual data consumption tends to be lower than travellers expect.

Before you fly

Confirm eSIM support and that your phone is unlocked, install the profile at home, and keep the activation email retrievable.

Download offline maps covering the whole country; it is small enough that this costs little and it is the thing that saves you on the Mountain Pine Ridge roads. Screenshot every confirmation you have, especially domestic flight bookings, lodge addresses and guide phone numbers, since those are precisely what you need while standing somewhere with no bars. Enable data roaming for the travel line, keep the home line for verification codes, and tell people at home which days are jungle or reef days so silence does not read as a problem.

Do I get 5G in Belize?

No. DigiCell do not yet offer 5G to visitors in Belize, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

Is there 5G in Belize?

Not when we checked in 2026. DigiCell (run by Belize Telemedia) and Smart (run by SpeedNet) both run 4G LTE, and BTL's published price lists only mention LTE. Your eSIM uses DigiCell's 4G. It handles navigation, messaging and video calls fine in towns and on the main cayes, but it won't match the speeds you may get at home.

What number do I call for an emergency at sea in Belize?

The US State Department lists VHF channel 16 and the 966 hotline for maritime incidents, and 911 for police or ambulance on land. Mobile signal fades on the way out to the barrier reef and is absent at the atolls and the Blue Hole, so boat operators rely on VHF radio. It also warns that emergency numbers don't always connect.

Will my phone work on the flight from Belize City to San Pedro?

Keep it in flight mode in the air, but expect signal at both ends. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly from Philip Goldson International (BZE) and Belize City Municipal (TZA) to San Pedro and Caye Caulker. DigiCell covers the settled parts of Ambergris Caye, and you'll be online again in San Pedro within minutes of landing.

Can I pay in US dollars in Belize?

Yes, almost everywhere. The Belize dollar is pegged at two to one with the US dollar and US cash is widely accepted, but notes that are worn, torn or written on are often refused. Cards are common in hotels and restaurants, sometimes with a surcharge. Smaller island businesses may want cash.

Belize: what to know before you land

Belize has two mobile networks: DigiCell, run by the state-owned Belize Telemedia Limited, and Smart, run by SpeedNet. Your eSIM uses DigiCell's 4G LTE, and Belize had no commercial 5G when we checked. The US State Department says service is mostly reliable but patchy in remote areas, so plan your data around the reef and jungle days.

DigiCell, Smart and why Belize is still a 4G country

Belize's mobile market is small. DigiCell (often shortened to Digi) is the mobile brand of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), the government-owned incumbent that also runs most of the country's fixed broadband and fibre. Smart, run by SpeedNet Communications, is the only competitor. Your eSIM connects to DigiCell.

DigiCell's LTE dates from the end of 2016, when it moved to LTE-Advanced on a Huawei-built network. Smart launched LTE in December 2015. When we checked in 2026, neither network had launched commercial 5G, and BTL's current price lists still describe its mobile data as LTE. So 4G is the top speed you'll see in Belize for now. It is enough for maps, messaging and photo uploads, but upload large videos on lodge or hotel Wi-Fi.

BTL laid a submarine cable to Ambergris Caye in 2017, which brought fibre to San Pedro. That is one reason resort Wi-Fi on Ambergris tends to be better than at a jungle lodge in Cayo, where the internet may arrive by satellite or a long radio link.

From Philip Goldson (BZE) to the cayes by Tropic Air and Maya Island Air

International flights land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), at Ladyville, north of Belize City. Many visitors connect straight on to a short hop with one of the two domestic airlines, Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. These fly from BZE and from the smaller Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA) on the waterfront to San Pedro (SPR) on Ambergris Caye, to Caye Caulker (CUK) and south to Placencia, Dangriga and Punta Gorda.

Switch your eSIM on as you land. Domestic departure times shift with weather and passenger loads, and changes usually reach you by WhatsApp or email. Check the airline's own channel before you leave the terminal.

If you are taking the water taxi to the cayes instead, it leaves from Belize City's terminals near the Swing Bridge. You'll need to get there from BZE by taxi. The UK government advises using only registered taxis with green licence plates, agreeing the fare first and expecting to pay cash. Messaging your hotel the driver's plate number is a sensible habit.

Calling 911 or 966 on land and at sea

For police or ambulance on land, dial 911. On the water, Belize has a separate maritime route: the US State Department lists VHF channel 16 and the 966 hotline for incidents at sea. Dive and snorkel boats carry VHF radios for this reason. Phones are unreliable once you are out on the barrier reef or heading to the atolls.

The State Department also warns that public phones are rare and that emergency numbers in Belize don't always connect. Save the direct numbers for your lodge, dive operator and tour company in your contacts, and keep your home SIM active for calls, since the eSIM handles data only.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. The UK government advises following the US National Hurricane Center, the National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO). NEMO issues shelter and evacuation notices, and those spread quickly on WhatsApp and Facebook, so data matters most in the days before a storm.

Belize dollars, cards and paying on Caye Caulker

The Belize dollar (BZD) is pegged at two to one with the US dollar, and US cash is widely accepted. Prices are often quoted in either, so check which one you are looking at. The State Department notes that most businesses take credit cards, but some add a surcharge. Many will refuse US dollar notes that are worn, torn or written on.

ATMs accept foreign cards but can charge high fees. Use machines inside banks or businesses rather than standalone ones on the street, which the UK government also recommends for safety.

On Caye Caulker and in smaller towns, many tour operators, golf-cart rentals and food stands take cash only or a bank transfer arranged over WhatsApp. Banking apps and card verification codes are the data uses that catch visitors out. Make sure your bank's app works over mobile data, and keep your home line on for SMS codes. The State Department also advises avoiding public Wi-Fi for banking, another reason to use your own data connection instead of the café network.

  1. Day 1 San Ignacio

    Arrive and head west to San Ignacio

    About 2 hours by road from the airport to San Ignacio (roughly 115 km).

    Land at Philip Goldson International and drive or take a transfer west along the George Price Highway, stopping at the Belize Zoo, which keeps rescued native animals such as jaguars and tapirs in forest enclosures. Reach San Ignacio by late afternoon and walk up to Cahal Pech, the small Maya hilltop site on the edge of town, before dinner around Burns Avenue.

    Signal DigiCell 4G is reliable at the airport, along the highway towns such as Belmopan and in San Ignacio; there is no 5G anywhere in Belize yet.

  2. Day 2 San Ignacio

    Actun Tunichil Muknal cave

    About 1 hour by road from San Ignacio to the trailhead, the last part on a dirt road.

    Spend the day on a licensed guided trip to Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) in the Tapir Mountain reserve. You walk through forest and wade three river crossings before swimming into the cave mouth, then climb inside to chambers holding Maya pottery and calcified human remains, including the skeleton known as the Crystal Maiden. Cameras and phones are not allowed inside, so leave yours in the vehicle.

    Signal Signal fades on the dirt road and there is none at the trailhead or in the cave; your guide's operator is your contact for the day.

  3. Day 3 San Ignacio

    Xunantunich and the Mopan River

    Xunantunich is about 20 minutes west of San Ignacio by road.

    Drive to San José Succotz and cross the Mopan River on the hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich. Climb El Castillo, the main pyramid, for views into Guatemala and see the carved stucco frieze on its upper levels. Back near San Ignacio, spend the afternoon tubing or canoeing on the Macal River, or visit the Green Iguana Conservation Project in town. Do not wander into forest near the border.

    Signal 4G at Xunantunich and in San Ignacio; close to the border your phone may pick up a Guatemalan network, so keep your network selection on DigiCell.

  4. Day 4 Caye Caulker

    Water taxi to Caye Caulker

    About 2 hours by road from San Ignacio to Belize City, then about 45 minutes by water taxi.

    Return east to Belize City and take a water taxi from the terminal near the Swing Bridge to Caye Caulker. Settle in on the car-free island, where golf carts and bicycles are the main traffic, walk Front Street to the Split at the north end of the village for a swim, and watch the sunset from the western side of the island.

    Signal 4G holds most of the way on the water taxi and Caye Caulker village is covered, though speeds slow in the evening when the island is busy.

  5. Day 5 Caye Caulker

    Snorkelling Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

    Boats leave from the Caye Caulker docks; Hol Chan is about 30–45 minutes away.

    Join a licensed snorkel boat to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a channel cut through the barrier reef where you can see coral, turtles and large shoals of fish, and to Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and southern stingrays gather. Many trips also stop at a coral garden off Caye Caulker. Spend the late afternoon at the Split or kayaking along the mangrove side of the island.

    Signal Expect weak or no data out at the reef cut; boats carry VHF radios, and 911 or 90 is the emergency number once you are back in range.

  6. Day 6 San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

    Ambergris Caye and San Pedro

    About 30 minutes by water taxi from Caye Caulker; Blue Hole trips take about 2 hours each way by boat.

    Take the water taxi north to San Pedro, the main town on Ambergris Caye. Rent a golf cart or bicycle and ride north over the bridge along the coast road, or stay in town and walk the beach path past the piers. Divers can instead book a full-day trip from San Pedro to the Great Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye, part of the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.

    Signal San Pedro generally has the best connectivity on the cayes; on a Blue Hole trip you will be offline for most of the day.

  7. Day 7 Belize City

    Fly back to the mainland

    San Pedro to Philip Goldson International is about 15–20 minutes by domestic flight.

    Have a final morning swim or snorkel off the pier at San Pedro, then take a short Tropic Air or Maya Island Air flight from San Pedro back to Philip Goldson International to connect with your flight home. If you have a late departure, the Belize City waterfront, the Swing Bridge and the Museum of Belize in the old colonial jail can fill a couple of hours.

    Signal Good 4G at San Pedro airstrip and at the international airport; check WhatsApp or email for any schedule changes from the domestic airline before leaving for the airstrip.

Staying connected on this route

  1. Download offline maps of Cayo district before the ATM cave and Xunantunich days; signal stops on the dirt roads into the reserves.
  2. Save your dive or snorkel operator's and lodge's numbers, since phones are unreliable on the reef; boats use VHF radio, and 911 or 90 is the emergency number on land.
