About this eSIM

Forty islands and cays, eight of them inhabited, and most visitors spend their week on one: Providenciales. That concentration is the key to how connectivity works here. FLOW serves the islands on 4G LTE, coverage is good where people actually live and stay, and it falls away quickly once you are out on the water or on one of the empty cays. Having the profile already loaded means you are online from the moment you land rather than after a queue at a counter.

Getting online when you land

Providenciales International is a small airport and it empties fast, which is a mixed blessing when your resort transfer or hire car is the thing standing between you and the beach.

Set the profile up at home over wifi and leave it dormant, then enable it once you are on the ground. Attachment normally takes under a minute. If nothing shows by the time you have your bag, switch airplane mode on and off, then confirm data roaming is enabled for the travel line specifically rather than for your home number.

Keep your usual SIM active for calls and one-time codes, with its data switched off. Villa managers, charter operators and car hire desks here work by phone and text as much as by email, and you want those messages reaching the number you gave them.

The networks you'll be on

You will be on FLOW, running 4G LTE. There is no 5G in this plan, and for what people actually do on a beach holiday that changes very little: maps, messaging, video calls home, streaming and photo uploads all run fine on 4G/LTE.

There is no operator choice to agonise over either. Attachment is automatic, there is nothing to configure, and the manual network list is short. What you will notice instead is the connection stepping down from 4G/LTE to 3G as you move away from the developed strips. Treat that as your cue to switch from video to text, because messaging apps keep working long after a video call has fallen over.

Resort and villa wifi is generally good, so the sensible pattern is to do anything heavy where you are staying and keep mobile data for when you are out.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Solid: the whole Grace Bay corridor, Leeward, Turtle Cove, Downtown Provo, Long Bay, Chalk Sound and the Blue Hills road, plus the airport and the marinas. Provo is where the population and the infrastructure are, and it behaves like a well covered place. Cockburn Town and the settled part of Grand Turk are fine too, as are the main settlements on North and Middle Caicos and around South Caicos.

Thin or absent: almost everything else, and that is a large share of what makes the islands worth visiting. Boat trips are the clearest example. Out on the banks, at a snorkel stop over the reef, or anchored off Little Water Cay with the iguanas, you should assume you are offline for the duration. The same goes for the wall dives off Grand Turk and West Caicos and for the crossing on the North Caicos ferry, which drifts in and out.

On land, the uninhabited stretches of Middle and East Caicos have little to nothing, and the Conch Bar Caves are underground. Even on the causeway between North and Middle Caicos, the signal comes and goes between settlements. Salt Cay is quiet in every sense.

None of this is a problem if you plan for it. It is a problem if you were relying on a live map to find a beach access track that is not on a live map anyway.

What you'll actually use data for here

Booking and coordination, more than navigation. Boat charters, dive slots, kite lessons, the North Caicos ferry and restaurant tables are all arranged by phone, message or web form, often the day before, and in busy weeks the good slots go quickly. If your plans depend on a captain, your phone is how you keep in touch with the captain.

Driving comes next. Provo is a hire car island, traffic keeps to the left, and the roads out to Chalk Sound, Blue Hills and the western beaches are easier with directions running. Cache the map anyway; the roads are simple, but the turnings for beach access are not always obvious.

Then the ordinary things: weather and sea conditions, which decide whether a boat day happens at all, especially through the storm months later in the year; card and banking apps, since this is a card-friendly place; and photo uploads, which on a trip built around water and light will be the bulk of your data if you let them be.

You will not need translation. English is the language of the islands.

Stray bullets and the 12-year minimum sentence

The single most important pre-trip check for the Turks and Caicos has nothing to do with your phone. The UK Foreign Office says importing firearms, ammunition, including stray bullets, or any other weapon is prohibited without written approval from the Commissioner of Police, and the penalties include a minimum custodial sentence of 12 years. Declaring a weapon to your airline does not give you permission to bring it in.

Visitors have been caught out by a single forgotten round in a bag used on a hunting or range trip. The FCDO advises searching your luggage before you travel. Empty every pocket of any bag, jacket or camera case that has been near firearms.

Other entry details to keep on your phone:

You can visit without a visa, and immigration normally grants up to 90 days on arrival.
Border control may ask for a return or onward ticket, so save it offline; your eSIM connects only after you land at Providenciales.

If you hire a car, a few things differ from home:

Traffic drives on the left, but most rental cars are left-hand drive, which takes some getting used to at junctions and roundabouts.
Speed limits are 20 mph in towns and 40 mph elsewhere.
Accidents are increasing on the Leeward Highway, especially at night, and street lighting is limited away from main roads.
On Grand Turk, livestock often wanders onto the road.

Crime is mostly opportunistic, but Providenciales and Grand Turk have higher levels of serious crime, including gang-related gun crime. Be careful at ATMs, avoid isolated areas at night and do not carry large amounts of cash. If someone tries to take your phone, do not resist.

Dive boats, hurricane season and calling 911

Diving and snorkelling are the main reasons many people come, and they take you out of mobile coverage. The UK Foreign Office advises checking a dive operator's credentials and safety equipment, confirming there is oxygen on board, and getting advice on safe depths. Before any dive or snorkel trip, leave your trip details and expected return time with someone ashore: a friend, the hotel desk or villa staff. A quick message before you board is enough, and it matters because you will be unreachable once the boat leaves the reef behind.

Hurricane season normally runs from June to November. Follow official forecasts and the islands' Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME), which also publishes earthquake information, and check the forecast every morning in the storm months before committing to a boat day.

Seven days in Turks and Caicos: Providenciales, North and Middle Caicos, and Grand Turk

A week that mixes beach time on Providenciales with the quieter islands: Grace Bay and Chalk Sound, a reef and cay boat day, a ferry-and-causeway day on North and Middle Caicos, then two nights on Grand Turk for its museum, lighthouse and wall diving.

When to go December to April is dry and breezy and the main season, with humpback whales passing in winter; June to November is hurricane season, when boat days and small-plane flights are more often cancelled.

Day 1 Providenciales

Providenciales: Grace Bay

The airport is about 15–20 minutes from Grace Bay by taxi.

Arrive at Providenciales International and take a licensed taxi, agreeing the total fare first as many charge per person. Spend the afternoon on Grace Bay, the long beach on the north shore, then snorkel at Bight Reef, also called Coral Gardens, a marked reef close to shore at the western end of the bay. Watch the sunset from the beach.

Signal FLOW 4G LTE is strong across Grace Bay and central Providenciales. There is no 5G in the islands, and signal drops quickly once you swim out over the reef.
Day 2 Providenciales

Chalk Sound and Sapodilla Bay

Chalk Sound is about 20–25 minutes from Grace Bay by car, via the Leeward Highway.

Hire a car, remembering that you drive on the left in mostly left-hand-drive vehicles. Head to Chalk Sound National Park in the south-west, a shallow turquoise lagoon dotted with small rocky cays, best seen by kayak or paddleboard. Spend the afternoon at Sapodilla Bay and Taylor Bay, calm, shallow beaches nearby, and look for the old ship inscriptions carved into the rocks on Sapodilla Hill.

Signal FLOW 4G covers most of the south-west, though it can be weaker out on the water in Chalk Sound. Avoid driving the Leeward Highway at night, where accidents are rising.
Day 3 Providenciales

Boat day: Iguana Island and Half Moon Bay

Boats leave from marinas on the east side of Providenciales; the cays are a short ride away.

Join a licensed boat trip east from Leeward to Little Water Cay, known as Iguana Island, where boardwalks let you see the protected Turks and Caicos rock iguanas without disturbing them. Continue to Half Moon Bay, a sandbar beach between the cays, and stop to snorkel a nearby reef. Check the operator's safety equipment before you go.

Signal Coverage is patchy on the boat and at the cays, and absent once the boat is further offshore. Leave your plans and return time with someone before you leave.
Day 4 Providenciales

North and Middle Caicos

Ferry from Providenciales to North Caicos, about 30 minutes, up to five times a day; confirm the last return.

Take an early ferry to North Caicos and pick up a hire car on arrival. Drive across the causeway to Middle Caicos and visit Mudjin Harbour, where limestone cliffs look over Dragon Cay, then the Conch Bar Caves, the largest dry cave system in the island chain, ideally with a local guide. Stop at Bambarra Beach before driving back for the last ferry.

Signal Signal is good near the North Caicos ferry dock but weaker on the causeway and across Middle Caicos. Expect none inside Conch Bar Caves.
Day 5 Grand Turk

Fly to Grand Turk: Cockburn Town

Domestic flight from Providenciales to Grand Turk, about 20 minutes, several times a day.

Take a short domestic flight to Grand Turk. Walk Front Street in Cockburn Town, the capital since 1766, past its colonial buildings and old salt-industry houses. Visit the Turks and Caicos National Museum in Guinep House for finds from the Molasses Reef wreck, Lucayan history and the salt trade, then spend the late afternoon on Governor's Beach.

Signal FLOW 4G works around Cockburn Town and the cruise centre area. Coverage is weaker on quieter stretches of the island.
Day 6 Grand Turk

Grand Turk: the wall and the lighthouse

Spend the morning diving or snorkelling the Grand Turk wall, where the reef drops from shallow water into the deep a few minutes by boat from shore; divers often see turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays. Check the dive operator carries oxygen on board. In the afternoon drive north to the Grand Turk Lighthouse, lit since 1852, and look out for the wild donkeys grazing nearby.

Signal No signal on dive boats offshore. Coverage at the lighthouse is usually available but weaker than in town; livestock on the roads makes daylight driving the safer choice.
Day 7 Providenciales

Back to Providenciales

Domestic flight from Grand Turk to Providenciales, about 20 minutes.

In winter, take an early boat trip to look for humpback whales, which pass Grand Turk on their migration. Otherwise, have a slow morning on Governor's Beach or Pillory Beach. Fly back to Providenciales for your international departure, leaving a comfortable gap in case the small domestic flight is delayed.
