Our Moldova coverage runs on Orange, with 3G and 4G/LTE. One partner network rather than a choice of several is worth knowing up front, because it sets expectations honestly: in Chisinau and the larger towns you will have a fast, unremarkable connection, and in the deep countryside you get what that single network reaches and nothing else. For a country most people cross by car between wineries and monasteries, that is usually fine, as long as you cache your route before you leave the capital.

Getting online when you land

Chisinau International is close to the city, and the drive in is short enough that you do not strictly need a map for it. You do need one for everything after. Install the profile before you travel, while you are on wifi at home, and leave it switched off until you land.

At the terminal, enable the plan, wait for it to attach to 4G/LTE, and make it your data line. Your usual SIM stays in place for calls and the codes your bank sends. Turn roaming off on that home line so nothing runs up a bill in the background.

If the connection does not appear, one flight-mode toggle usually sorts it; a restart is the next step. It is worth confirming you are online before you leave the airport building, because sorting a phone out at a village crossroads at dusk is a different kind of problem.

The networks you'll be on

You will be on Orange, which covers 3G and 4G/LTE here. There is no 5G in the picture for this plan, and in practice you will not miss it: 4G/LTE handles maps, messaging, calls over the internet and photo uploads perfectly well, and the constraint that actually shapes your trip is geography, not radio generation.

Nothing needs configuring. The phone attaches on its own and stays attached. When the signal weakens it steps down to 3G rather than cutting out, so a slow page load in a rural area is usually a fallback rather than a failure. Wait a few seconds before assuming something is wrong.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Dependable: Chisinau and its ring of suburbs, Bălți in the north, Cahul in the south, Comrat in Gagauzia, and the main roads linking them. The wine estates within easy reach of the capital, the ones most visitors see, are generally well served, as is Soroca up on the Dniester.

Thinner: the farm tracks and village lanes off the main routes, the wooded Codru hills, the river valleys where the land drops away, and the far edges of the country near the borders. Moldova is not a mountainous country, so the drop-offs are less dramatic than in an alpine destination; they are more a matter of distance from infrastructure than of terrain blocking a signal.

Then there is the specific case that catches wine tourists out: the great cellars at Cricova and Mileștii Mici are underground road networks cut into limestone, and you will have no signal at all down there. That is not a coverage failure, it is rock. Agree with your group where you will meet before you descend. Orheiul Vechi's cave monastery is the same idea on a smaller scale.

Treat the left bank of the Dniester around Tiraspol as its own situation. Do not plan on your data working normally there; load everything you need in advance and be prepared to be offline for the visit.

What you'll actually use data for here

Navigation, more than in most European countries. Rural signposting is limited and villages often have a single road with no obvious name, so the map is doing real work rather than confirming what you already know. Download the country offline before you set out; it is a small file and it removes the entire problem.

Translation gets constant use. Romanian is the state language and Russian is widely spoken, menus and museum labels are frequently in neither of your languages, and a camera translation app makes shop and restaurant signs readable in a second.

Winery visits are almost all booked ahead, usually by phone or through a messaging app, and confirmations tend to arrive the evening before. Being reachable matters. Ride-hailing works in Chisinau and is the easy way to get around after dark. Beyond that it is the normal load: photos, messages home, and looking up the history of whatever fortress you are currently standing in.

Before you fly

Confirm the handset is unlocked and supports eSIM, then install the profile at home rather than at the airport.

Save your accommodation address as a screenshot, in the local spelling as well as your own. Download the offline map. If you are hiring a car, note that the good roads and the bad roads are not always distinguishable on a map, and that a route which looks like a shortcut across country can be an unsurfaced track.

Pack a car charger. Long driving days between the capital, the north and the south are how most trips here are structured, and a phone running navigation for three hours does not last the day on its own.
