Mayotte is French territory in the Mozambique Channel, and almost every visitor arrives the same way: a flight into Pamandzi on the small island of Petite-Terre, then a barge across the channel to Mamoudzou on the main island. A data plan matters more here than in a typical beach destination, because the barge timetable, the shared taxis and the trailhead directions are all things you look up rather than things that are signposted for tourists. Getting online when you land

Thinner: the interior. Mayotte is a compact island with a mountainous spine, and the roads that climb across it lose signal in the folds between ridges. The climb up Mount Choungui in the south, the forest paths of the central massif, and the mangrove approaches to some of the southern beaches are all places to expect nothing. The far southern beaches around N'Gouja and Saziley, and the northern coves reached by rough track, sit at the edge of coverage rather than inside it.

Traffic is the local surprise. The approach into Mamoudzou backs up badly at the start and end of the working day, and live traffic data is the difference between making the barge and watching it leave. Beyond that it is the usual: photos, messages home, and checking a forecast during the wetter months when a downpour can rearrange a day's plans.
