Dominica is the most vertical island in the eastern Caribbean, and that vertical is the whole story for mobile data. Signal follows the coastal road and the two main towns; ridges, gorges and rainforest interrupt it constantly. If your trip is built around hiking, plan for being offline more than you are on.

Getting online when you land

Get the profile installed before you leave home, over your own wifi. Douglas-Charles airport sits on the north-east coast, well over an hour of winding road from Roseau, and the drive is not where you want to be troubleshooting a download.

Once you land, turn the profile on and allow data roaming for it. Give it a few minutes. If you have arrived by ferry into Roseau from Guadeloupe or Martinique instead, the same applies; the crossing itself is largely without signal, so switch on once you are alongside.

Your existing SIM should stay in the phone for calls. Guides, boat operators and guesthouse owners here work by phone, and many will call rather than message to confirm a pickup.

The networks you'll be on

Cable & Wireless carries mobile data on the island, running 3G and 4G/LTE. There is no 5G here and none to wait for.

With a single operator, coverage is a single footprint. Nothing else will catch your handset when it slips out of range, so the honest planning assumption is that where the network stops, you are properly offline rather than merely slow.

Where you have 4G, it does everything a visitor needs: messaging, maps, a video call home, uploading photos. The 3G tier that appears in the villages and along the mountain road handles text and voice notes and little else. In the interior you will frequently have neither, and that is a normal Dominica day rather than a fault.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Workable: Roseau and its immediate suburbs, the Bay Front and the market area; the west coast road running north through Mero and Salisbury; Portsmouth, Picard and the university area; Canefield; the southern villages of Loubiere, Pointe Michel and Soufriere; and Calibishie and Marigot on the north-east coast near the airport.

Intermittent: the mountain road over the spine between the coasts, where you will lose and recover signal repeatedly; the Kalinago Territory along the east coast; the Layou valley; and the villages high above Roseau such as Laudat and Wotten Waven, where the terrain does the blocking.

Effectively absent: the interior. That means Morne Trois Pitons national park, the Boiling Lake trail and the Valley of Desolation, Middleham Falls, Titou Gorge once you are in it, the upper reaches of the Waitukubuli National Trail, and most river hikes. Add the boat trip up the Indian River and the dive sites at Champagne Reef and Scotts Head to the list.

This is not a failing of the island so much as a description of it. Dominica is steep, forested and thinly populated between towns, and towers need people and roads.

What you'll actually use data for here

Arranging things, and reassuring people.

Guides and drivers are the practical core of a Dominica trip, because the trailheads are remote and the roads are demanding. You will use messaging to book them, to reschedule around rain, and to say you are running late. Do that while you have coverage, not from the trail.

Weather is the other constant. Rainfall here is heavy and localised, rivers rise fast, and whether a gorge hike or a waterfall swim is sensible today is a question worth checking before you set off rather than discovering on the way.

You will also use data for the practical admin of island travel: ferry schedules between the islands, which shift; boat trips for whale watching, which run on conditions; and confirming card payments, since not every business off the main strip takes them and you will want to know before you rely on it.

Finally, use it to check in. Telling someone you are heading into the interior and will be unreachable until evening is genuinely useful information on this island.

Before you fly

Download offline maps of the whole island plus your specific trailheads. Then take a real map as well. Trail junctions in the interior are not always signed and a phone with no signal and a flat battery is not a navigation tool.

Screenshot your guesthouse directions, your guide's number and any booking confirmations. Store them in local storage rather than a cloud folder that needs a connection to open.

Bring a power bank and a genuinely waterproof case. Dominica is wet, humid and hot, you will be near water constantly, and a handset searching for a distant tower in the mountains burns charge fast.

Above all, treat hiking days as offline days and plan them that way. Agree a return time with someone before you set off. That single habit is worth more here than any amount of data.
