eSIM for Colombia

Colombia runs on 4G, not 5G, and that single fact shapes what your phone can do here. In Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena a 4G connection is plenty for maps, ride-hailing and calling home. Step outside the big cities and the Andes start making the decisions for you.

Getting online when you land

Set the eSIM up at home over your own wifi, days before departure if you can. Installing a profile needs a working internet connection, and the moment you want data most is exactly the moment you have none: standing at immigration in El Dorado with a taxi queue forming.

Once installed, leave the profile switched off until the wheels touch down. Then turn it on, enable data roaming for that profile specifically (the setting sounds wrong, but eSIM profiles from abroad register as roaming partners on Colombian networks and will not pass traffic without it), and give it a minute or two to attach. Bogota's El Dorado, Medellin's Jose Maria Cordova and Cartagena's Rafael Nunez all have decent airport wifi if you need a fallback while it settles.

Keep your usual SIM in the phone as the voice line. Colombian hotels, tour operators and airlines will happily call the number you booked with, and you want that ringing.

The networks you'll be on

Two national operators carry the traffic: Claro on 4G/LTE, and Tigo on both 3G and 4G/LTE. Between them they cover the populated spine of the country, from the Caribbean coast down through the central cordilleras to the Cauca valley.

What you will not see is a 5G icon. That is not a fault with your eSIM or your phone; it reflects what these networks make available to visiting devices. Set your expectations at solid 4G in the cities and be pleasantly surprised by nothing.

The 3G fallback matters more than people assume. In smaller pueblos and on long stretches of highway, your phone will quietly drop to 3G. WhatsApp messages, voice notes and turn-by-turn navigation all keep working. Uploading a batch of photos or joining a video call will not. Learn to read that indicator and adjust what you ask of the connection.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Reliable: the Bogota savanna and the whole urban sprawl out to Chia and Zipaquira; Medellin's Aburra valley including the metrocable lines up the hillsides; the coastal corridor through Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta; Cali and the flat Cauca valley around it; and the coffee axis towns of Armenia, Pereira and Manizales.

Unreliable, sometimes completely absent: the Amazon south around Leticia, where the river is the road and the network mostly is not; the Pacific coast of Choco, including the whale-watching bases at Nuqui and Bahia Solano; the desert tracks of La Guajira heading toward Punta Gallinas; the four-day trek to Ciudad Perdida through the Sierra Nevada; and the high paramo passes on the road between departments, where you can lose signal for half an hour at a stretch.

Tayrona national park is a specific trap. You may have bars at the entrance and nothing at all on the beaches, which is where you will actually want to arrange a pickup.

What you'll actually use data for here

WhatsApp, mostly. It is how you will confirm a hostel booking, get directions from a tour guide, receive your bus ticket and haggle politely over a taxi fare. Voice notes are the local dialect of it; expect people to reply that way rather than typing.

After that: ride-hailing apps in the three big cities, which spare you the negotiation and give you a route on screen; live traffic routing, which genuinely earns its keep in Bogota, where the same journey can take twenty minutes or ninety; a translation app, because English drops off sharply outside tourist zones; and card verification codes, since foreign cards get challenged often here.

Download offline music and video before long-distance buses. The Bogota to Medellin road is beautiful and slow, and you will spend hours of it out of range.

Before you fly

Pull offline maps for every city and region on your route, not just the capital. Screenshot your accommodation addresses in Spanish, including the neighbourhood, so a driver can read them off your lock screen without needing you to be online.

Carry cash. Card readers in smaller places fail with the signal, and a taxi driver who cannot take your card while you cannot open your banking app is a bad situation on a wet night.

Bring a power bank. Altitude, heat and a phone hunting for signal in weak-coverage areas will drain a battery faster than you plan for, and Colombia gives you all three in the same week.

Finally, set a data usage warning on the profile before you leave. Maps and video calls consume more than you would guess when the network keeps renegotiating between 3G and 4G.
