Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Long distance bus routes crossing the centre of the country pass through hours of nothing. In big cities, favela areas and the interior of large concrete buildings can also be weaker than the surrounding street.

Messaging apps first, as covered, then ride-hailing, which is how most visitors move around Rio and Sao Paulo after dark and which requires a live connection to work at all. Payment is the next big one: instant bank transfer by QR code is now the default way Brazilians settle everything from a beach caipirinha to a market stall, and even where you pay by card you will be reading and confirming on your phone. Add public transport apps for the Sao Paulo and Rio metro systems, translation for the fact that English is far less widespread than visitors expect, and maps for cities where addresses include a block, a building and a neighbourhood that all need to be right.

Before you fly

Install the profile at home over wifi and give it a clear label. Set your home line to voice and text only so it does not roam alongside the eSIM. Download offline maps for each city you are visiting rather than the whole country, since Brazil is too large to store usefully in one go, and add the highway corridors if you are driving. Save your accommodation addresses as screenshots, including the neighbourhood name, because a Brazilian address without it is ambiguous.
