eSIM for Chile

Chile is a very long country with a narrow spine of connectivity running down it, and the plan here reaches it through two operators with quite different capabilities: Movistar, which carries 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G, and Claro, which is 3G only. That asymmetry is the thing to understand. When your phone is on Movistar in a city you have a modern connection; when it falls back to Claro you have a slow one that still sends a message and still loads a map, just without any speed. Both are better than nothing, and in Patagonia nothing is a real option.

Getting online when you land

Do the install before you travel. Chilean arrivals at Arturo Merino Benítez in Santiago move quickly, and you will want data for a ride or the airport bus rather than for troubleshooting.

Once through, activate the travel line, enable data roaming for it, and set it as the default for mobile data. Your home SIM stays put with data off, handling calls and any verification code your bank sends. Airport wifi is available if you need a moment to sort settings, but if the install was done properly at home you should attach on the walk to baggage reclaim.

The networks you'll be on

Movistar is where you want to be and where you usually will be in populated areas, with LTE across the cities and 5G in parts of central Santiago and the larger urban comunas. Claro's 3G is the fallback, and you will feel the difference immediately: text-based apps behave, image-heavy pages crawl, video does not really happen.

Practically, this means Chile rewards downloading things in advance. When you have a fast connection in Santiago or Puerto Montt, pull down maps, podcasts and anything you want for the road. Do not assume the speed you had this morning is the speed you will have this evening, because in Chile that depends less on the time than on which network your phone found.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

The reliable corridor is the middle of the country: Santiago and its comunas, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Rancagua, Talca, Concepción, Temuco, and the Ruta 5 that strings them together. Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas and the Lake District towns are well served, as are La Serena and the Elqui valley, and Antofagasta and Iquique in the north.

Then it thins, and it thins dramatically. The Atacama has coverage in San Pedro and Calama and long silences on the altiplano roads out to the geysers, salt flats and lagoons. South of Puerto Montt, Chiloé is fine in Castro and Ancud and patchy elsewhere. The Carretera Austral is largely offline between settlements, sometimes for a whole day of driving. Torres del Paine has some service near the park entrances and the refugios and essentially none on the circuits. Punta Arenas works; the fjords, channels and glacier approaches do not. Rapa Nui sits thousands of kilometres out in the Pacific and should be treated as its own question rather than assumed.

What you'll actually use data for here

Long-distance transport planning takes up most of it. Bus companies, domestic flights and the ferries down south all need booking and confirming, and the schedules matter far more than they would in a compact country. Weather forecasts genuinely change plans in Patagonia and in the Andes.

In Santiago it is Metro apps, ride-hailing, restaurant bookings and paying by card almost everywhere. Spanish here is fast and idiomatic, so a translation app earns its keep. And there is the constant background use: uploading photos of the Valle de la Luna or the Torres at sunrise, checking park entry systems, and messaging home across a time difference that makes live calls awkward.

Before you fly

Download offline maps for every region you will visit and, more importantly, for the roads between them. Do it before you leave Santiago if you are heading south or north, not once you are already out there.

Save bus, flight and ferry confirmations as screenshots. Take a power bank and a car charger; Chilean drives are long and navigation drains a phone. Pack for altitude in the north and for wind in the south, both of which shorten battery life, and keep the phone warm on cold mornings. Plan buffer time around any Patagonian leg, because a ferry that does not sail is not something you can fix from the road with no signal.
