eSIM for Andorra

Nobody flies into Andorra, because there is no airport. You arrive on a road, usually after three hours in a coach from Barcelona or Toulouse, and that journey is the first reason to have an eSIM sorted before you go: you will want live departure information and a working map long before you reach the border post. The second reason is that Andorra sits outside the EU, so bundles built around European roaming often stop dead at the frontier.

Getting online when you land

There is no arrivals hall to do this in, so do it earlier. Install the profile at home, leave the line switched off, and turn it on when the coach clears the border at La Farga de Moles or Pas de la Casa. The handset picks up the local network within a minute or so.

Andorra has a single national mobile network, and every visiting eSIM here uses it. It runs 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G, which is generous for a country this size and reflects the fact that its entire economy depends on visitors who expect their phones to work.

In practice that means the towns and the ski domains give you a genuinely fast connection. 5G shows up where the population and the lifts are concentrated, 4G is the everyday baseline, and 3G is the fallback when you are somewhere the other two do not reach. Because there is one network rather than several, there is also no point switching operators to solve a dead spot; if it is not there, it is not there for anyone.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

The Gran Valira valley is the spine of the country and it is well covered end to end. Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany, Sant Julia de Loria, Encamp, Canillo and Ordino all behave like connected European towns. The ski areas are the other priority: expect service around the base stations, lift queues and mountain restaurants at Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal, because that is where thousands of people stand around with phones out.

The gaps are the ones the terrain dictates. Off-piste bowls, the back sides of ridges, the upper reaches of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, and the hiking routes toward the higher lakes and refuges will lose you. Coll d'Ordino and the tighter sections of the mountain roads drop in and out. The pattern is simple: if you can see the valley floor, you are probably fine; if a ridge is between you and it, you are probably not.

What you'll actually use data for here

In winter, almost everything you do with your phone here is mountain logistics. Lift status and which sectors are open, snow and wind reports, the resort app for finding the rest of your group, and photographs going straight to whichever chat thread is tracking the trip. Weather changes fast at this altitude and the forecast you checked at breakfast may be irrelevant by lunch.

The rest of the year the pattern shifts to trail maps, refuge bookings and road conditions, plus the thermal spa timetables in Escaldes. Year round there is the shopping, which is a genuine reason people come: comparing what is worth carrying home, and checking the duty allowances for whichever country you are heading back into.

Practical point about maps: cache them. Andorra is compact but very three-dimensional, and a route that looks like a short hop on screen can be a long climb in reality. Offline elevation data is worth more here than in most places.

Before you fly

Book and save your coach transfer details offline, including the pickup point at the airport end, because that is the part of the trip where you are most likely to be juggling luggage and a fading battery.

Download offline maps covering the whole country plus the approach roads on both the Spanish and French sides. Add your resort's piste map if it offers an offline mode.

Check the handset is unlocked and eSIM capable, install the profile before you leave, and keep your home SIM in place with its data turned off so your usual number still receives messages. In the cold, expect your battery to drain faster than it does at home, and pack accordingly.
