Almost every eSIM problem that looks like a broken plan is actually a phone problem, and in the United States it is nearly always one of two: the device is locked to a carrier, or it does not have eSIM hardware at all. Both are checkable in under a minute, and both are far easier to fix at home than abroad.

This guide covers how to check, what the US market’s particular quirks are, and how to set up two lines properly once you are eligible.

Check for eSIM hardware first

There is one universal test. Dial the sequence star, hash, zero, six, hash on your keypad. A panel appears showing device identifiers.

If that panel includes an EID, a long number alongside the IMEI, the phone has eSIM hardware. If it shows only an IMEI, it does not, and no plan or provider can change that.

Two platform specific routes give the same answer:

  • iPhone. Settings, then General, then About, and scroll to the EID row. Alternatively Settings, then Cellular, and look for an option to add an eSIM.
  • Android. Settings, then Network and internet, then look for an add SIM or download a SIM option. Naming varies by manufacturer more than it does on iOS.

Broadly, iPhone XS and newer, and most flagship Android devices from roughly 2019 onward, support eSIM. Budget Android models are the inconsistent category, and some perfectly recent ones omit it. Rather than trust a list that ages badly, check the manufacturer directly: Apple maintains the current list of models in Set up eSIM on iPhone, Samsung publishes which Galaxy phones support an eSIM, and Google documents it in its guide to dual SIMs on Pixel.

The carrier lock is the real gatekeeper

This is where most US travellers get caught, because a locked phone gives no obvious warning. The eSIM profile installs normally, appears in your settings, and then simply never finds a network. Everything looks correct except the part that matters.

A carrier lock limits the device to networks its original carrier allows. Because most US phones are sold on instalment plans rather than outright, locks are the default rather than the exception here in a way they are not in much of Europe.

The usual criteria for unlocking, which each carrier publishes on its own site, are that the device is fully paid off and the account is in good standing. The request goes through your carrier’s app or support line.

Two practical points. First, it is not always instant, so allow several days rather than doing it the night before a flight. Second, a phone bought outright from Apple or Google, or an older device you paid off years ago, is very likely unlocked already, and you can confirm that with a single question to your carrier.

What eSIM only means for US iPhones

Every iPhone sold in the United States from the iPhone 14 generation onward has no physical SIM tray. The same model sold in other markets frequently does, so a phone bought overseas may behave differently from the US version of what appears to be the identical device.

For travel, the balance is favourable. You can store several profiles at once and switch between them, there is no tiny card to drop, and adding a line is a software action rather than a physical one.

The cost is the loss of a fallback. The traditional plan B for an American abroad was to buy a local prepaid SIM at the airport. On an eSIM only phone that only works if the local operator sells eSIM profiles to visitors, which many still do not, or requires an in person identity check that consumes an afternoon.

So the sequencing changes. Buy and install before departure, while you still have wifi, because a QR code installation needs an internet connection to complete and an arrivals hall is exactly where you will not have one.

Running two lines the right way

Once your phone is eligible and unlocked, the setup that works for most US travellers takes two minutes and looks like this.

  1. Install the travel eSIM at home, on wifi. The new line appears in your cellular settings showing no service, which is the correct dormant state before you travel.
  2. Keep your US line enabled so calls and text messages still reach it. This is what keeps bank verification codes arriving.
  3. Turn off data roaming on the US line. This is the step that prevents an unexpected bill, and it is separate from turning the line off entirely.
  4. On arrival, enable the travel eSIM and set it as your data line. Leave calls and messages defaulting to your US number.

The result is your familiar number for everything that needs a number, and cheap data for everything else. Apple’s own guide to using Dual SIM with an eSIM covers the iPhone specifics. Dual SIM behaviour varies slightly between manufacturers, and some Android devices can store several profiles but keep fewer active at once, so check your own model rather than assuming.

Band support, the last variable

An unlocked eSIM phone can join any operator that accepts it, but only on the radio frequencies the hardware supports. That is band compatibility, and it is the quiet reason two travellers on identical plans sometimes report very different signal in the same city.

For most people this is a non issue. Flagship phones sold in the US over the last few years carry broad international band support, and any recent iPhone or Samsung, Pixel or comparable Android will work essentially everywhere a travel eSIM operates.

Where gaps appear is at the edges: older devices, regionally specific budget models, and phones bought for one market and carried to another. The symptom is not a total failure but weaker coverage in particular countries, especially outside cities where fewer bands are deployed.

If you want to check, your phone’s specification page lists its supported LTE and 5G bands, and the operator you will be riding on publishes the bands it runs. Matching the two is a five minute job and worth doing only if you are travelling somewhere remote on an older handset. For a recent phone on a mainstream itinerary, assume it is fine.

One thing band support does not fix: a country where the host network is 4G only. No amount of hardware capability produces 5G that the local operator has not deployed, which is why a blanket 5G promise from any provider should be read as marketing rather than a specification.

When compatibility is not the problem

If the phone has an EID, is unlocked, and the profile still will not connect, the cause is usually one of four things, none of which is the device.

The plan has not been activated. Some providers start validity on installation, others on first network connection. A plan installed weeks early may have already expired.

Manual network selection is stuck. If your phone is set to choose a network manually from a previous trip, it may be searching for one that does not exist where you are. Set network selection back to automatic.

Data roaming is off on the travel line. Counterintuitively, a travel eSIM usually needs data roaming enabled on its own line, because it is technically roaming on a partner network. This is the opposite of the setting you want on your home line.

The destination is in a registration regime. A handful of countries require SIM registration before a visitor line will carry data, which no provider can bypass on your behalf.
