A carrier lock is a software restriction that ties a phone to the network that sold it, preventing SIM cards and eSIMs from other operators from working until the lock is removed. It exists so carriers can subsidise handsets or sell them on instalment plans without customers immediately taking the discounted phone to a rival.

Locks are most common on phones bought directly from carriers, particularly in the USA, and least common on phones bought unlocked from manufacturers or independent retailers. A locked phone behaves deceptively with travel eSIMs: the profile often installs without complaint, then shows no service or an activation error, because the modem refuses any line that is not the home carrier’s. Checking is easy. On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About, and look for Carrier Lock: it should say No SIM Restrictions. On Android the wording varies by brand, so the reliable methods are asking the selling carrier or simply trying a SIM from another network. Unlocking is normally free once the device is paid off or the contract term ends, but processing can take days, which is why it belongs on your pre-trip checklist rather than your airport to-do list.

The common confusion is mixing up the carrier lock with the screen passcode or with IMEI blacklisting. The passcode protects your data; blacklisting flags stolen hardware; the carrier lock only restricts which operators the phone will accept, and removing it changes nothing else about the device or your existing plan.
