Sierra Leone rewards travellers who prepare, and connectivity is one of the things worth preparing. Mobile data here is concentrated in Freetown, the peninsula beaches and the larger provincial towns, and it becomes sparse and unpredictable once you head into the interior. An eSIM handles the part that matters most, which is arriving already connected, because the journey from the airport to the city is one of the more complicated arrivals anywhere in West Africa.

Getting online when you land

Install the profile at home, before you fly. Lungi airport sits on the far side of an estuary from Freetown, and reaching the city means a water taxi, a ferry or a long road detour, usually booked or confirmed on a phone and often coordinated by message. Landing without data turns that into an entirely avoidable ordeal.

After landing, leave airplane mode and let the handset register on a local network. If it shows a network but passes no data, the roaming switch on the travel line is the first check, and the data line selection on a dual line phone is the second.

Have your accommodation address, your pickup arrangement and the contact number for whoever is meeting you saved on the device itself, not just in an email. Arrivals here often happen after dark, and you want that information available even if data is briefly unavailable.

The networks you'll be on

Your phone will roam onto the local mobile networks serving the country. Expect a connection that comfortably supports messaging, maps, email, mobile money and social apps, and expect it to be uneven rather than uniformly fast. Speeds vary noticeably between Freetown and the provinces, and between one hour of the day and another.

There is no single trick that fixes a weak connection, but two habits help. Cycle airplane mode to force a fresh network search when data stalls rather than sitting on a frozen page. And if your phone offers manual network selection, look at what else it can see when you are somewhere with poor service, since the operator your device chose automatically is not always the one with the best local mast.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Freetown is the best served part of the country by a wide margin, across the central districts, Aberdeen, Lumley and the hills above the city. The peninsula road down to the beaches at Lumley, Tokeh, River Number Two and Bureh generally keeps a usable signal, though it fades in the sections where the road runs between forest and steep hillside. Bo, Kenema and Makeni all have service, as do the roads connecting them.

Away from that, be realistic. The interior thins out quickly, and coverage follows the main roads and the towns rather than the countryside between them. Tiwai Island and the surrounding rainforest, the Gola forest, the Loma Mountains and the approach to Mount Bintumani, and the Outamba Kilimi area in the north are all places to plan around being offline for extended periods. Boat trips to the Banana Islands, Bunce Island or the Turtle Islands lose signal on the water and may or may not regain it at the other end. The estuary crossing from the airport itself has gaps mid channel.

Rain is a factor the rest of the year is not. During the wet season, heavy tropical downpours degrade both the network and the roads, and a journey that was straightforward in January can become a long, patchy, poorly connected day in August.

What you'll actually use data for here

Communication with people, more than consumption of content. WhatsApp is the operating system of arrangements in Sierra Leone: drivers, guides, guesthouses, boat operators and tour organisers all work through it, and voice notes carry better on a marginal connection than a phone call does.

Mobile money is the other pillar. Payments and transfers by phone are widely used, and they need a connection to complete. Cash remains important, especially outside Freetown, so treat phone payments as a convenience rather than the whole plan.

Then navigation, which is genuinely useful given that many roads are unsigned and directions are given by landmark; translation is less of an issue since English is official, though Krio will come at you fast; and photo uploads from beaches that most people at home will not believe are in Sierra Leone.

Before you fly

Check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM capable, install and label the profile in advance, and keep your usual number switched on for bank codes with its data turned off.

Download offline maps covering Freetown, the peninsula and every provincial route on your itinerary. This is not optional preparation here; it is the difference between a manageable drive and a lost afternoon. Save contacts, addresses and confirmations locally.

Carry a power bank and charge whenever you have the opportunity. Long journeys, hot days and constant map use empty a battery fast, and your phone is doing more jobs on this trip than it usually does.
