Three islands, one small population, and a mountainous interior that decides where the signal goes. That is the whole story of using a phone in Grenada. The southwest, where the airport, the capital and most of the hotels sit, is comfortably connected. The rainforest ridges in the middle, the windward coast and the trip across to Carriacou are where you notice that this is a small island network doing a lot with limited geography.

Getting online when you land

Getting connected before you leave the airport is worth the two minutes. If you have a boat charter, a dive briefing or a ferry to catch, confirm the timing while you are certain of your signal.

Yacht arrivals into Prickly Bay, St George's or Port Louis have the same routine with an extra wrinkle: coming in from another island, your phone may still be holding onto a network from wherever you sailed from, so check the network name once you are properly alongside.

The networks you'll be on

Service comes from Cable and Wireless, the operator listed for Grenada, on 3G and 4G/LTE. In the developed parts of the island that gives you a solid everyday connection, with 4G/LTE doing the work and 3G filling in as you get further from the main centres.

With one listed operator there is no alternative to switch to, so the sensible approach is to use what you have well. Do heavy downloads and photo backups on hotel or restaurant wi-fi, which is widely available across the south coast, and let the mobile connection handle navigation, messaging and everyday browsing. Rain squalls, which arrive quickly here, can knock a marginal connection about for a few minutes; that usually passes.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

The southwest is the strong quarter. St George's, the Carenage, Grand Anse, Morne Rouge, Lance aux Epines, True Blue and the airport area all have dependable service, as does the main road running north along the leeward coast towards Gouyave and Victoria. The south coast marinas are well served, which matters if you are living on a boat for a week.

The interior is where it drops. Grand Etang, the crater lake and the rainforest trails around it sit high and enclosed, and coverage there is patchy at best. The waterfall walks at Concord, Seven Sisters and Royal Mount Carmel put you in steep valleys under heavy canopy, which is the least helpful combination there is. Expect gaps on the cross island road over the ridge as well.

The windward side is thinner than the leeward side. Grenville, Sauteurs and the northern villages have service in town, with quieter stretches between them and around Levera and the eastern beaches.

Carriacou is its own case. Hillsborough and Tyrrel Bay are covered, but the island is small and lightly populated and reception falls away in the remoter corners and along the empty beaches. The ferry crossing itself is largely offline mid channel, and Petite Martinique is quieter again. Anyone going out to Sandy Island or diving off the reefs should plan on a disconnected day.

What you'll actually use data for here

Booking and rearranging, mostly. Dive shops, sailing trips, waterfall tours and chocolate and rum estate visits all run on small operator schedules that flex with the weather and the number of guests, and most of the back and forth happens by phone or message. Restaurant tables, particularly on a Friday when Gouyave is busy, get held the same way.

Maps help for driving, which is the usual way to see the island. The roads are narrow, steep and often unsigned, and the difference between the coast road and a mistake in the hills is significant. Cache the map before you set off rather than relying on loading it as you go.

English is spoken everywhere, so translation never comes up. What does come up is weather, especially in storm season, when forecasts and any official advisories are worth checking daily. The rest is photographs of the harbour, the spice markets and a lot of very green hillsides.

Before you fly

Install the profile at home and confirm it is showing before you travel. Keep your usual SIM in for calls and verification texts, with its data roaming switched off so nothing drifts onto an expensive network.

Download offline maps covering the whole island plus Carriacou, and screenshot your accommodation address, transfer or ferry booking, dive shop contact and return flight reference. Save a pin for your hotel, since directions here are given by landmark far more often than by street name.

Carry a power bank for long days out, keep the phone dry on boat trips and out of the sun in the car, and treat any day in the rainforest or across the water as one where people will not be able to reach you until you are back on the coast.
