About this eSIM

A Dakar eSIM gets you online across Senegal as soon as you land, with no roaming fees and one-tap activation. Dakar sits on quick 4G and solid coverage: you will have signal at the towering African Renaissance Monument, along the Corniche seafront, in the buzzing Plateau district and out on the ferry to Goree Island. The network holds from the airport into the city and toward the beaches at Yoff, so rideshare, maps and translation apps work from your very first minute.

In Dakar the most reliable coverage runs across the central Plateau district, around the Almadies and along the corniche and Ngor area near the coast. It gets patchier on the far edges of the peninsula, toward the suburbs and on the ferry out to Goree Island. Set the eSIM up on wifi before you arrive so you are online on landing, and keep your usual number on for calls. Tip: pin your hotel and a few landmarks, since drivers navigate by district.

Unlimited runs at full speed up to a fair-use limit, then continues slower.

Before you buy

Important to know

  • This is a data-only eSIM. It carries no calls or SMS on its own number.
  • Your existing number stays on your primary SIM, so calls and verification texts keep working.
  • Your phone must support eSIM, and some carrier-locked phones cannot install one.
  • Signal varies with location, terrain, congestion and your handset. Dense urban areas are consistently better served than remote ones.
  • The eSIM selects a host network automatically. You cannot pick or switch between them.
  • Unlimited plans run at full speed up to a fair-use limit, then continue at a reduced speed. Read the fair usage policy

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Dakar?

Yes. Your Senegal eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are Free. Coverage runs on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on our host network in Senegal yet.

Do I get 5G in Dakar?

No. Free do not yet offer 5G to visitors in Senegal, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

How much data do I need for Dakar?

These are Viasimo's sizing recommendations, not measurements of your trip. Maps, messaging and the occasional lookup run to roughly 1GB a week. Streaming, video calls or tethering a laptop push that to 3-5GB a week, and uploading photos and video moves past it faster still. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone. Sizing one tier up costs less than topping up part-way through a trip.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Dakar?

Usually, though it depends on your own carrier. A roaming day-pass is charged for each day it is active whether you use the data or not, while a prepaid bundle is one up-front purchase for a fixed amount of data. The gap widens on longer trips. Check your carrier's published rate for Dakar before you fly rather than taking our word for it.

How do I install my eSIM?

After checkout we email you a QR code. On your phone, open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile data, tap Add eSIM, and scan the code. Installation takes under a minute.

When does my Dakar eSIM activate?

Your plan activates automatically when you arrive and connect to a local network, so your validity period only starts once you land.

Can I keep my regular number?

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your physical SIM, so you keep your home number for calls and texts while using Viasimo for data.

Can I top up or extend my plan?

Yes. You can buy more data or extend your plan at any time from your account before it expires.

Does it support hotspot and tethering?

Tethering is supported on most devices, so you can share your connection with a laptop or other devices.
