About this eSIM

This is a compact, well-served territory with one mobile operator behind the plan: FLOW, running 4G LTE and 5G where it has been rolled out. On Grand Cayman that is more than adequate, and because the island is small and flat, a single network manages to reach almost all of the places visitors go. The honest limits are not urban ones; they are the Sister Islands, the interior mangroves, and the moment your boat leaves the shelter of the North Sound.

Getting online when you land

Owen Roberts International is close enough to George Town that some people are at their hotel before their phone has settled. Install the eSIM ahead of time and simply activate it after landing: enable the line, allow data roaming on it, set it as your data default, and leave your usual SIM in for voice.

If you are arriving by cruise ship rather than by air, the same applies, but do it as you come into George Town harbour rather than while still at sea. Tender days are tightly timed and you do not want to spend the first of your few hours ashore poking at network settings.

The networks you'll be on

FLOW carries everything. LTE is the normal experience across the developed parts of Grand Cayman, and it is genuinely fast enough to work from a beach bar if that is your intention. Where there is no LTE you will see 3G, and where there is neither you will see nothing, since there is no rival network to roll onto.

Wifi is close to universal in hotels, condos, restaurants and dive shops here, which softens the single-operator situation considerably. Between the two, staying connected on Grand Cayman takes no effort at all.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Strong across the whole George Town and Seven Mile Beach corridor, out through West Bay and Camana Bay, along the road east through Bodden Town, and around Rum Point and the East End. The airport, the cruise terminal area and the main commercial districts are all comfortably covered.

Thinner: Cayman Brac gets service concentrated around the settlements at the base of the Bluff, with far less on top of it and in the caves. Little Cayman has coverage near the resorts and the airstrip and not much elsewhere, which is roughly what you would expect on an island with more iguanas than residents. The Central Mangrove Wetland is empty. Offshore you should assume you are out of range: the sandbar at Stingray City is a boat ride from anywhere, the North Wall and Bloody Bay dive sites are further, and no plan changes the fact that your phone is in a dry bag anyway.

What you'll actually use data for here

Booking and confirming, mostly. Dive operators, boat charters, restaurant tables and the ferry or short flight between the three islands all run on messages and calls that you will want to make from wherever you happen to be standing. Weather and sea-state checks are more than idle curiosity if you have a dive or a snorkel trip planned.

Beyond that: maps, though the island has essentially one main road and you will learn it by day two; taxi and shuttle bookings, since there is limited ride-hailing and arranging a car ahead is the norm; card payments and banking apps, given how much of Cayman runs on international business; and uploading an unreasonable number of photographs of very clear water.

Before you fly

Confirm eSIM support on your phone and complete the install at home. Download an offline map of Grand Cayman, and of Cayman Brac or Little Cayman if you are visiting them, since fetching one on the Sister Islands is less certain.

Save your accommodation address, dive shop details and any charter booking as screenshots, then keep them somewhere you can reach without a connection. Take a waterproof case or pouch if you plan to be in or on the water, which you will be. Bring a power bank for boat days, and if the Sister Islands are on your itinerary, treat any planning that needs the internet as something to do before you get on that small aircraft rather than after.

Which mobile networks operate in the Cayman Islands?

Cayman Islands: what to know before you land

The Cayman Islands got 5G in June 2024, when FLOW and Digicel both switched it on, and FLOW said three-quarters of residents could reach it at launch. Your eSIM uses FLOW. Before hurricane season, it is also worth installing the government's free emergency alert app, which visitors can use, so warnings reach your phone over data.

FLOW and Digicel's 5G launch on Grand Cayman

Cayman's two long-established mobile operators are FLOW, run by Cable & Wireless Communications, and Digicel; a newer entrant, Paradise Mobile, launched in late 2024. Both launched 5G within days of each other in June 2024, putting Cayman ahead of most of the Caribbean. The regulator, OfReg, had released large blocks of spectrum in the 2300, 2500 and 3500 MHz bands, which industry speakers at a regional spectrum conference later singled out as unusual for the region.

At launch, FLOW said 75 percent of the population would be able to use its 5G. Since almost everyone lives on Grand Cayman, that mainly means George Town, Seven Mile Beach, West Bay, Camana Bay and the built-up areas towards Bodden Town. 5G only appears where there is a 5G mast nearby, and elsewhere your phone uses 4G LTE.

Your eSIM connects to FLOW only. Digicel and Paradise Mobile are the other networks on the islands, but the eSIM won't switch to them if FLOW's signal is weak. If someone tells you their Digicel phone has signal where yours doesn't, that is the reason.

Hurricane alerts from Hazard Management Cayman Islands

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, which overlaps with plenty of holiday travel to Cayman. Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) runs the National Emergency Notification System, which sends alerts about hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, major fires, airport incidents and chemical spills, with the location and what to do.

The government says visitors as well as residents can sign up, and the service is free. To set it up:

Go to nens.gov.ky, choose the app option and enter your email address.
Download the AtHoc app and sign in with the same email.
Enter the organisation code HMCI when asked.
Check that the app confirms you will receive notifications.

The app needs a data connection to receive alerts, so do it before you fly and keep your eSIM's data on while you are on the islands. Alerts are also sent by email or text if you choose those options, and an emergency system can break into broadcasts on every local radio station, which is useful if mobile networks go down during a storm.

Hopping to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman

Most visitors land at Owen Roberts International (GCM) on Grand Cayman. The two Sister Islands, about 140 km north-east, have their own airports: Charles Kirkconnell International (CYB) on Cayman Brac and Edward Bodden Airfield (LYB) on Little Cayman, linked to Grand Cayman by short domestic flights.

The Sister Islands are small and quiet, with only a few hundred to a couple of thousand residents on each, so there are far fewer masts. Before the flight over, do anything that needs a reliable connection: download offline maps of both islands, confirm your dive bookings and save your accommodation details.

On money: the Cayman Islands dollar (KYD) is fixed against the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted on all three islands, though change is often given in Cayman dollars. Cards work in most hotels, restaurants and dive shops. Keep a little cash for smaller places on the Brac and Little Cayman.

Cayman uses the same plugs and voltage as the US (Type A and B, 120V), so North American travellers won't need an adapter.

Seven days in the Cayman Islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac

A week for snorkellers, divers and beach lovers: four days around Grand Cayman's beaches, sandbar and quieter eastern districts, then short island-hopping flights to Little Cayman's reef walls and Cayman Brac's cliffs and caves.

Day 1 Grand Cayman (Seven Mile Beach)

George Town and Seven Mile Beach

Fly into Owen Roberts International (GCM), a short drive from George Town and Seven Mile Beach.

Settle in along Seven Mile Beach, the long west-coast strand where most visitors stay. In George Town, walk the harbourfront, see Fort George's remains and visit the National Museum in one of the town's oldest buildings. Spend the afternoon swimming and snorkelling at Cemetery Beach at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, and watch the sunset from the sand.

Signal FLOW's 5G is aimed at the most populated parts of Grand Cayman, which include George Town and the Seven Mile Beach strip, so a 5G phone will often pick it up; elsewhere you will be on 4G.
Day 2 Grand Cayman (Seven Mile Beach)

Stingray City sandbar, Starfish Point and Rum Point

Boat tours leave from West Bay and the North Sound marinas; Rum Point is about 45 minutes by road from Seven Mile Beach.

Take a morning boat trip across the North Sound to the Stingray City sandbar, where you stand waist-deep while southern stingrays glide around you, often combined with a snorkel stop on a shallow reef. Afterwards, drive or boat to Starfish Point to see cushion starfish in the shallows (look, do not lift), then relax at Rum Point. After dark, join a bioluminescent bay kayak or boat tour.

Signal 4G usually holds across the North Sound and at Rum Point, but keep your phone in a dry bag: signal drops in the far reaches of the sound.
Day 3 Grand Cayman (Seven Mile Beach)

West Bay: turtles, Hell and Barkers

Head to West Bay, the island's north-west district. Visit the Cayman Turtle Centre to learn about the green sea turtles central to Cayman's history, then stop at Hell, the patch of jagged black limestone with its own post office. Continue to Barkers National Park for a walk along the mangroves and a quiet beach. Return to Seven Mile Beach for an evening swim.

Signal Good 4G, often 5G, throughout West Bay, one of the built-up areas where 5G is most likely; coverage thins only at the far tip of Barkers.
Day 4 Grand Cayman (Seven Mile Beach)

The eastern districts: Pedro St James to the Botanic Park

A full day's loop by hire car (driving is on the left).

Drive east along the south coast to Pedro St James in Savannah, a restored 18th-century stone house often called the birthplace of Cayman democracy. Continue through Bodden Town to the East End blowholes, where waves spout through the ironshore. Turn north to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park for the blue iguana habitat and native gardens, and finish at the Crystal Caves in North Side.

Signal Coverage is 4G rather than 5G in East End and North Side, with a few weak spots along the coast; inside the Crystal Caves expect no signal.
Day 5 Little Cayman

Little Cayman: Bloody Bay Wall and Booby Pond

Cayman Airways Express to Edward Bodden Airfield (LYB); confirm schedules in advance, as flights are small and limited.

Fly to Little Cayman, the smallest and quietest of the three islands. Dive or snorkel Bloody Bay Wall, where the reef drops from shallow water into the deep blue, one of the Caribbean's best-known wall dives. In the late afternoon, visit the Booby Pond Nature Reserve, run by the National Trust, to see the red-footed booby colony and frigatebirds. Cycle the island's quiet roads.

Signal FLOW covers the settled south-west of Little Cayman, but with only a few masts expect 4G at best and patchy coverage elsewhere; out on the dive boats you may lose signal.
Day 6 Cayman Brac

Cayman Brac: the Bluff and its caves

Cayman Airways Express between Little Cayman and Cayman Brac takes only a few minutes in the air.

Take the short hop to Cayman Brac. Walk the trails along the Bluff, the limestone ridge that rises to the island's eastern cliffs, and explore Peter's Cave and the Bat Cave, once used as hurricane shelters. Look for the Cayman Brac parrot in the reserve on top of the Bluff. Divers can visit the wreck of the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts, a Soviet-built frigate sunk as a dive site.

Signal Expect 4G near the settlements on the north and south coast roads; on the top of the Bluff and inside the caves, coverage is weak or absent.
Day 7 Grand Cayman

Back to Grand Cayman and departure

Cayman Airways Express from Cayman Brac (CYB) to Grand Cayman, roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on the aircraft.

Fly back to Grand Cayman in the morning. If you have time before your flight, visit Camana Bay for a walk up the observation tower over the North Sound and Seven Mile Beach, or take a final swim at Governor's Beach. Allow plenty of time for the airport, where check-in for international flights can be slow at peak times.
