Cameroon is often described as Africa in miniature, and its mobile coverage reflects that geography honestly: excellent where people are concentrated, absent across the rainforest and the far north. The plan connects through Orange on 3G and 4G/LTE, one operator, no 5G. Douala and Yaoundé will feel unremarkable in the best way, and the further you travel from those two poles, the more you should be planning around the connection instead of relying on it.

Getting online when you land

Set the profile up before departure while you still have fast, free wifi and someone to ask if it goes wrong. Keep it switched off until you are through immigration at Douala International or Yaoundé Nsimalen.

Then three toggles matter: enable the travel line, allow data roaming on it, and make it your default for mobile data. Your home SIM stays in the phone for voice and for verification texts from banks, which will not send to a data-only line. Douala's airport sits inside the city and the drive to Bonanjo or Akwa is short, so you can sanity-check that data is flowing before you have committed to anything.

The networks you'll be on

Orange carries all of it. Where Orange is strong you are strong; where it is not, there is no alternative to switch to, which makes wifi at hotels and business centres worth treating as part of your plan rather than a fallback you will never use.

LTE is normal in the two big cities and in provincial capitals. Elsewhere you will spend a lot of time on 3G. That is a workable connection for WhatsApp, email and a map tile loading a little late, and a frustrating one for video calls or sending large files. Adjust expectations rather than fighting it.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Douala and Yaoundé are the reliable zones, along with the highway that links them. Bafoussam, Bamenda, Garoua, Maroua, Bertoua and Ngaoundéré all have workable service in and around town. The coastal belt through Limbe and Kribi holds a signal along the developed strip, and Buea at the foot of Mount Cameroon is fine at town level.

Coverage in Cameroon follows roads and settlements, and stops when they do. Climbing Mount Cameroon takes you out of range quickly above the treeline. The Korup and Dja rainforests are effectively offline, as are the plantation tracks and the ring road sections in the Grassfields once you leave the paved surface. Up north, Waza and the routes toward Lake Chad have long silent stretches. River crossings, forest camps and the mountain villages of the Mandara range should all be treated as no-signal by default.

What you'll actually use data for here

WhatsApp is the default channel for arranging drivers, confirming a guesthouse and getting an address sent to you, and it degrades gracefully on a weak signal, which is exactly what you want here. Maps matter more than usual because road quality varies enormously and the fast route on paper is not always the fast route in reality.

Cameroon is officially bilingual, but which language you meet depends on where you are, so a translation app earns its space if you only speak one of French or English. You will also use data for the practical rhythm of long-distance travel: checking whether an agency bus to Bamenda or Kribi has departures left that day, looking up when a border post closes, and sending word ahead that you are running late, which on Cameroonian roads you probably are.

Before you fly

Confirm eSIM support on your handset and complete the install at home. Download offline maps covering not only your destinations but the whole route between them, since the gaps are on the road rather than at either end.

Screenshot addresses, contact numbers and booking confirmations. A phone number for the person meeting you is worth more than a live map when you have no bars, so have it written somewhere that does not need loading. Bring a power bank and, if you are heading north or into the forest, a second charging option: journeys run long, vehicles fill and leave on their own schedule, and mains power is not something to count on at the far end of the day.
