The paved national routes linking those towns generally have service near settlements and lose it between them, in gaps that can run for a long time on a bus. Away from the tarmac the picture is sparse: the Sahelian north, the eastern regions, and the unpaved tracks that lead to villages, granite domes and waterfalls are all places to assume you will be offline. Even in reachable areas like the Sindou peaks or the cascades near Banfora, treat any signal as a bonus rather than a plan.

A great deal of everyday commerce here runs through phone based payment and transfer rather than cards, and while you as a visitor may not be enrolled, the people you deal with will be, and transactions are confirmed by phone constantly. Beyond that, travellers use data for messaging with drivers, fixers and hosts, who are far more responsive on chat than by email, for translation between French and the local languages you will hear in markets, and for keeping up with current advisories and road conditions, which change and are worth rechecking rather than trusting a plan made weeks earlier. Maps help too, since street addressing in Ouagadougou relies heavily on landmarks and sector numbers rather than named streets and house numbers, and describing where you are is easier with a pin than with words. If your visit lines up with one of the big cultural events, the film festival or the craft fair, both of which fill the capital, you will also spend a fair amount of time checking programmes and venues that are published online and updated late.

Before you fly

Install and label the profile at home and keep your usual line active for calls and texts. Download offline maps of Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and any route between them, along with offline translation for French. Save your accommodation details, contacts and any letters of invitation as screenshots so you are not dependent on a connection to produce them. Bring a power bank and a means of charging that does not assume mains power will be there when you want it, because outages are routine. Register your travel with your embassy if that service is offered to you, share your itinerary with someone at home, and agree a check-in schedule rather than leaving it open ended.
