About this eSIM

Bermuda is roughly 34 square kilometres of connected islands, which means one mobile network reaches almost everywhere you will actually stand. The catch is that visitors cannot rent a car here, so your day runs on bus timetables, ferry schedules, dispatched taxis and the occasional rented scooter, and all of that lives on your phone. An eSIM is less about avoiding roaming charges and more about not being the person standing at a bus stop in Warwick with no idea when the next number 7 is due.

Getting online when you land

Flights arrive at L.F. Wade International Airport on St. David's Island, at the far eastern end of the chain, and the drive west to Hamilton or the South Shore hotels takes longer than the map suggests because the speed limit is low and the roads are narrow. Add the eSIM to your phone while you still have wifi at home, leave it switched off, then enable it once the cabin doors open. By the time you have cleared arrivals your phone should be registered and you can pull up your accommodation's exact parish before you get in a taxi. Cruise passengers docking at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Hamilton or St. George's can do exactly the same thing at the rail as the ship ties up, which beats waiting for the ship's own signal to release.

The networks you'll be on

Bermuda is a single small market, and your handset will attach to a local island network on its own without you choosing anything from a list. There is no useful operator hunting to do here in the way there is in a big country with three or four competing footprints; whatever the island runs is what you get, and your status bar will show the generation your phone negotiated. Practically, that means treat data as reliable and unremarkable in the settled parishes rather than as something you tune. If your phone ever sits on no service for more than a minute or two, toggling airplane mode fixes it far more often than fiddling with manual network selection does.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Bermuda's population is packed along a thin ribbon, so Hamilton, the length of Middle Road and South Road, the hotel strip around Southampton and Warwick, St. George's in the east and the Dockyard in the west are all comfortably covered. What drops out is water and rock. Take a boat across the Great Sound, run out to the reef line for a dive, or join a wreck trip and the signal fades as the land falls behind you. The same happens underground in the limestone cave systems near Bailey's Bay, and it can get patchy in the deep green tangle around Walsingham. None of this is a coverage failure; it is just what happens when a small island stops and the Atlantic starts.

What you'll actually use data for here

Public transport is the big one. Bus and ferry routes are zone-based and the timetables change by day of the week, so most visitors end up checking departures several times a day, especially on Sundays when service thins. After that it is taxi dispatch, since you cannot summon a cab by standing on a road here the way you would in a city, and restaurant reservations, which fill up fast in high season. Weather is the other constant: the island sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and squalls can turn a beach afternoon into an indoor one with very little warning, so people check radar habitually. Then the ordinary things, uploading pink sand photos from Horseshoe Bay, splitting the bill, and calling home across time zones.

Before you fly

Confirm your phone is eSIM capable and carrier unlocked, then install the profile at home rather than at the gate, because you need a working connection to download it. Label it clearly in your settings so you can tell it apart from your home line, and set your home SIM to voice only so it does not quietly pick up data in the background. Download an offline map of the whole island; it is small enough that the file is trivial and it covers you on boat trips. Save your hotel's parish and phone number as a screenshot, note the number of the bus route serving your area, and keep a power bank in your day bag, because scooter days and beach days both end with a flat battery more often than you would expect.

Unlimited runs at full speed up to a fair-use limit, then continues slower.

Before you buy

Important to know

  • This is a data-only eSIM. It carries no calls or SMS on its own number.
  • Your existing number stays on your primary SIM, so calls and verification texts keep working.
  • Your phone must support eSIM, and some carrier-locked phones cannot install one.
  • Signal varies with location, terrain, congestion and your handset. Dense urban areas are consistently better served than remote ones.
  • The eSIM selects a host network automatically. You cannot pick or switch between them.
  • Unlimited plans run at full speed up to a fair-use limit, then continue at a reduced speed. Read the fair usage policy

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Bermuda?

Yes. Your Bermuda eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are One. Coverage runs on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on our host network in Bermuda yet.

Do I get 5G in Bermuda?

No. One do not yet offer 5G to visitors in Bermuda, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

How much data do I need for Bermuda?

These are Viasimo's sizing recommendations, not measurements of your trip. Maps, messaging and the occasional lookup run to roughly 1GB a week. Streaming, video calls or tethering a laptop push that to 3-5GB a week, and uploading photos and video moves past it faster still. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone. Sizing one tier up costs less than topping up part-way through a trip.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Bermuda?

Usually, though it depends on your own carrier. A roaming day-pass is charged for each day it is active whether you use the data or not, while a prepaid bundle is one up-front purchase for a fixed amount of data. The gap widens on longer trips. Check your carrier's published rate for Bermuda before you fly rather than taking our word for it.

How do I install my eSIM?

After checkout we email you a QR code. On your phone, open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile data, tap Add eSIM, and scan the code. Installation takes under a minute.

When does my Bermuda eSIM activate?

Your plan activates automatically when you arrive and connect to a local network, so your validity period only starts once you land.

Can I keep my regular number?

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and runs alongside your physical SIM, so you keep your home number for calls and texts while using Viasimo for data.

Can I top up or extend my plan?

Yes. You can buy more data or extend your plan at any time from your account before it expires.

Does it support hotspot and tethering?

Tethering is supported on most devices, so you can share your connection with a laptop or other devices.
