About this eSIM

Bermuda is roughly 34 square kilometres of connected islands, which means one mobile network reaches almost everywhere you will actually stand. The catch is that visitors cannot rent a car here, so your day runs on bus timetables, ferry schedules, dispatched taxis and the occasional rented scooter, and all of that lives on your phone. An eSIM is less about avoiding roaming charges and more about not being the person standing at a bus stop in Warwick with no idea when the next number 7 is due.

Getting online when you land

Flights arrive at L.F. Wade International Airport on St. David's Island, at the far eastern end of the chain, and the drive west to Hamilton or the South Shore hotels takes longer than the map suggests because the speed limit is low and the roads are narrow. Add the eSIM to your phone while you still have wifi at home, leave it switched off, then enable it once the cabin doors open. By the time you have cleared arrivals your phone should be registered and you can pull up your accommodation's exact parish before you get in a taxi. Bermuda is a single small market, and your handset will attach to a local island network on its own without you choosing anything from a list. There is no useful operator hunting to do here in the way there is in a big country with three or four competing footprints; whatever the island runs is what you get, and your status bar will show the generation your phone negotiated. Practically, that means treat data as reliable and unremarkable in the settled parishes rather than as something you tune. If your phone ever sits on no service for more than a minute or two, toggling airplane mode fixes it far more often than fiddling with manual network selection does.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Bermuda's population is packed along a thin ribbon, so Hamilton, the length of Middle Road and South Road, the hotel strip around Southampton and Warwick, St. George's in the east and the Dockyard in the west are all comfortably covered. What drops out is water and rock. Take a boat across the Great Sound, run out to the reef line for a dive, or join a wreck trip and the signal fades as the land falls behind you. The same happens underground in the limestone cave systems near Bailey's Bay, and it can get patchy in the deep green tangle around Walsingham. None of this is a coverage failure; it is just what happens when a small island stops and the Atlantic starts.

Bus and ferry routes are zone-based and the timetables change by day of the week, so most visitors end up checking departures several times a day, especially on Sundays when service thins. After that it is taxi dispatch, since you cannot summon a cab by standing on a road here the way you would in a city, and restaurant reservations, which fill up fast in high season. Weather is the other constant: the island sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and squalls can turn a beach afternoon into an indoor one with very little warning, so people check radar habitually. Then the ordinary things, uploading pink sand photos from Horseshoe Bay, splitting the bill, and calling home across time zones.

Before you fly

Confirm your phone is eSIM capable and carrier unlocked, then install the profile at home rather than at the gate, because you need a working connection to download it. One Communications, Digicel and Paradise Mobile

Bermuda is a small market, but it is not a one-network island. GSMA figures put it at roughly 65,200 mobile connections at the start of 2025, split between three operators:

  • One Communications, formerly CellOne and part of ATN International, is the incumbent with the largest subscriber base. This is the network your eSIM connects to, on 4G/LTE.
  • Digicel is the long-standing second operator and switched on an island-wide 5G network in July 2025.
  • Paradise Mobile is the newest entrant, launched with a 5G-first approach, and has won Ookla's fastest-5G award in Bermuda.

One Communications also launched 5G in late 2023, starting in Hamilton, but your eSIM uses its 4G/LTE layer. On an island of this size that is rarely a limitation: 4G handles maps, ride booking, video calls and photo uploads comfortably, and One's long head start means its footprint covers the parishes where visitors stay.

If you see a 5G icon on a friend's local phone and LTE on yours, that is expected. It reflects the network layer, not a weaker signal, and for typical holiday use the difference is not something you are likely to notice.

Booking rides with HITCH, Ride.bm and Journi

Bermuda legalised ride share with tight rules, and the tourism board's guide spells them out. Every ride share trip must be booked through an approved digital dispatch app. The three named are HITCH Bermuda, Ride.bm and Journi. You cannot flag down a ride share car on the street.

How it works in practice:

  • Each request goes first to licensed taxis. Only if no taxi accepts does a licensed ride share driver get the job.
  • Fares are estimated up front and paid by credit or debit card in the app. Ride share does not take cash, so if you want to pay cash, take a taxi.
  • Ride share vehicles carry plates that include RS and must pass Transport Control Department inspections. Check the driver and car details in the app before getting in.
  • Ride.bm and HITCH both list airport rides, though the tourism board points visitors to taxis for airport transfers.

Because your eSIM is data only, you have no local number for drivers to call. Use the apps' in-app messaging, and keep your home SIM on if you want to receive a call back from a taxi dispatcher.

Seven days in Bermuda: Hamilton, St George's, Dockyard and the south shore

An unhurried island week using buses, ferries and ride apps instead of a hire car: Hamilton as a base, the UNESCO-listed town of St George's, the Royal Naval Dockyard, the pink-sand south shore beaches and the Railway Trail.

  1. Day 1 Hamilton

    Arrive and settle into Hamilton

    The airport is on St David's, about 25 to 30 minutes by road from Hamilton.

    From L.F. Wade International, take a taxi or a booked ride into Hamilton. Walk Front Street along the harbour, then climb to the Anglican Cathedral and the Bermuda National Gallery in City Hall. Buy a multi-day transport pass for buses and ferries at the Visitor Services Centre or in the Shorelink app, then watch the sunset from Barr's Bay Park on the waterfront.

    Signal One Communications 4G/LTE is solid in Hamilton and at the airport. Expect LTE rather than 5G with this eSIM.

  2. Day 2 Hamilton

    St George's, the old town

    About 45 to 60 minutes by public bus from Hamilton.

    Take the bus east to St George's, founded in 1612 and a UNESCO World Heritage site with its fortifications. Start at King's Square, then visit St Peter's Church, one of the oldest Anglican churches in continuous use outside Britain, and the roofless Unfinished Church nearby. Walk north to Fort St Catherine and finish with a swim at Tobacco Bay before the bus back.

    Signal Good 4G in St George's town and along the main bus routes. Signal can weaken inside thick-walled forts and churches.

  3. Day 3 Hamilton

    Caves, the aquarium and Spittal Pond

    The caves and Flatts are 20 to 30 minutes by bus from Hamilton; Spittal Pond is a short ride south.

    Head to Hamilton Parish for the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, where guided tours walk on pontoons over clear underground lakes. Continue to Flatts Village for the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo. In the afternoon walk the coastal trails of Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, the largest wildlife sanctuary on the island, looking out for Spanish Rock and migrating birds.

    Signal Expect no signal inside the caves. Coverage is good at Flatts and along South Road by Spittal Pond.

  4. Day 4 Hamilton

    The Royal Naval Dockyard

    The direct Blue Route ferry from Hamilton takes about 20 minutes; buses take far longer.

    Take the Blue Route ferry across the Great Sound to the Royal Naval Dockyard at the island's western tip. Spend the morning at the National Museum of Bermuda in the Keep, a 19th-century fortress with shipwreck finds and harbour views. Browse the Clocktower building and craft market, then swim at Snorkel Park Beach or take the ferry back via Somerset.

  5. Day 5 Hamilton

    South shore beaches

    Route 7 buses run along South Road from Hamilton, about 20 to 30 minutes.

    Spend the day on the south shore in Southampton and Warwick. Start at Horseshoe Bay, then follow the coastal trail east through South Shore Park past Chaplin Bay and Stonehole Bay to Jobson's Cove and Warwick Long Bay. Come early on cruise-ship days, when Horseshoe Bay gets crowded, and bring water; there is little shade on the dunes.

    Signal 4G is generally good along South Road, though it can drop in the coves below the cliffs.

  6. Day 6 Hamilton

    Gibbs Hill and the Railway Trail

    Climb the 185 steps of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton for a view over the whole island chain. Then walk or cycle a section of the Bermuda Railway Trail, the old railway line turned footpath, through Somerset towards Somerset Bridge, often called the world's smallest drawbridge. Return to Hamilton by bus or ferry from Watford Bridge or Somerset.

    Signal Good signal at the lighthouse. The Railway Trail runs through cuttings and woodland where 4G can dip, so download the trail map first.

  7. Day 7 Hamilton

    Botanical Gardens and departure

    Allow 25 to 30 minutes from Paget to the airport by road.

    Spend a gentle last morning at the Bermuda Botanical Gardens in Paget, then visit Camden House or walk to nearby Elbow Beach for a final swim. If time allows before your flight, stop at Clearwater Beach on Cooper's Island Nature Reserve near the airport, a quieter stretch of sand and a good spot for snorkelling.
