Nearly every phone, laptop, tablet and camera charger sold today is dual voltage, which means the only thing you actually need in most countries is a plug adapter to change the shape of the pins. A voltage converter is a separate and much heavier device, and it is only relevant for a short list of appliances, mostly things that heat or spin. Get that distinction right and your travel power kit collapses to one universal adapter, one good multi-port charger and a power bank.

Adapter or converter: the distinction that matters

This is the whole subject in two sentences, so it is worth being precise.

A plug adapter is a passive piece of plastic and metal. It changes the physical shape of your plug so it fits a foreign socket, and it does nothing else. Whatever voltage the wall is supplying passes straight through to your device.

A voltage converter or transformer changes the electricity itself, stepping 230 volts down to around 110, or the reverse. It is heavier, more expensive, and for most travellers completely unnecessary.

The reason most people never need a converter is that manufacturers of consumer electronics solved this problem decades ago. Phone chargers, laptop power bricks, camera battery chargers, electric toothbrush bases and tablet chargers are overwhelmingly built as switch-mode supplies that accept anything from roughly 100 to 240 volts. They genuinely do not care whether they are plugged in at a hotel in Osaka or an apartment in Lisbon.

What still trips people up is the assumption that fitting the plug in is the whole problem. It is, for your electronics. It is not, for a hair dryer bought in a 120 volt country and plugged into a 230 volt socket, which is a fast and occasionally dramatic way to destroy an appliance.

How to check a device in ten seconds

Do not consult the manual. Look at the device or its power brick and find the small printed block of text near the word INPUT.

If it reads something along the lines of INPUT: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz, the device is dual voltage, sometimes called universal voltage, and it works anywhere with nothing more than a plug adapter. This is what you will find on essentially every laptop and phone charger.

If it names a single range, such as 120V 60Hz on its own, that device is built for one supply. In another region it needs a converter, or it needs to stay home.

Do this check before you pack, for every device you intend to bring. It takes a couple of minutes for a whole bag and it removes all the guesswork. The label is small, so a phone camera and a bit of zoom helps.

One more note on frequency. Most dual-voltage electronics accept both 50 and 60 hertz and it makes no practical difference. Frequency only matters for a small number of devices with synchronous motors or mains-timed clocks, which are increasingly rare.

Plug types and voltage by region

Plug standards are lettered A through O, fifteen types in all. You do not need to memorise them, but knowing which letters you are heading into tells you whether your adapter will actually cover the trip.

A few of these deserve a sentence.

Japan runs the lowest mains voltage of any major destination at 100 volts, and it is split in two on frequency: the north and east, including Hokkaido and Tokyo, run at 50 hertz, while the west and south, including Osaka, Kyoto and Kyushu, run at 60. The sockets take the same flat two-pin shape used in North America, with one catch worth knowing. Japanese sockets are typically unpolarised, meaning both slots are the same width, while many North American plugs are polarised, with one blade deliberately wider than the other. That wider blade will not go into an older Japanese socket. Japanese sockets are also frequently unearthed, so a three-pin plug often has nowhere to put the third pin. Europe is close to uniform at 230 volts, and a type C two-pin plug fits the majority of sockets across the continent. Type F, the recessed round socket with earth clips, is the standard in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and many others; type E, with a protruding earth pin, is used in France, Belgium, Poland and Czechia. Most C plugs fit both. A trip covering several countries in Europe rarely needs more than one adapter.

Australia and New Zealand both use the type I plug with its angled flat pins, at 230 volts. Nothing from North America fits without an adapter, and nothing European does either. If you are travelling to Australia, one type I adapter covers the country and New Zealand as well, and it will also serve you in China, where type I is one of the accepted standards.

The awkward cases worth knowing

Most universal adapters handle the mainstream standards and quietly fall short in a few places. These are the ones to check before you leave.

Switzerland uses type J, a three-pin arrangement that is not the same as the standard European types. A two-pin type C plug fits Swiss sockets fine, but a chunky European three-pin one may not.

Italy uses type L alongside C and F. Many Italian sockets are the versatile kind that accept several shapes, but not all of them are.

Denmark uses type K. A type C plug fits, but the earth arrangement differs.

South Africa historically uses the large type M plug, though newer installations often include type N sockets as well. This is one of the few places where a generic universal adapter genuinely may not have the right pin configuration.

Thailand has its own type O standard, used nowhere else, but this is the rare case where a local peculiarity causes no trouble. Sockets there are overwhelmingly hybrid ones that accept several shapes including the two-pin type C, so a standard universal adapter works. Worth knowing rather than worth planning around.

Earthed connections. A cheap universal adapter often only passes two pins through, which is fine for a phone charger and less fine for a laptop brick with a three-pin plug or any appliance that expects an earth. If you carry a grounded device, buy an adapter that explicitly supports earthed connections.

The other thing to say about hotel sockets: they are frequently recessed, awkwardly placed behind furniture, or arranged so a bulky adapter blocks the socket next to it. A short extension lead from home, with your own familiar sockets on it, solves this problem elegantly. Plug the extension into one adapter and you have several home-standard sockets by the bed.

Devices that actually need a converter

The list is shorter than most people expect, and it is characterised by heat and motors.

  • Hair dryers, straighteners and curling tongs. The classic problem. Single-voltage models draw a lot of power and fail dramatically on the wrong supply. Many hotels provide a hair dryer, and travel models with a dual-voltage switch exist; either is easier than carrying a converter.
  • Travel kettles, irons and clothes steamers. Same reasoning.
  • Electric shavers and some grooming devices. Often dual voltage now, but check the label rather than assume.
  • Small kitchen appliances and anything with a heating element. If it gets hot, check it.
  • Older or specialist equipment, including some audio gear and some lab or hobby devices.

Two cautions. First, cheap converters sold for travel are often designed for short, intermittent use with resistive loads, and they are not appropriate for sensitive electronics. If a device is dual voltage, do not put a converter in front of it. Second, for any medical device, including anything you rely on to sleep or breathe, do not improvise: check the manufacturer’s guidance for international use and speak to a qualified professional or the supplier about travelling with it.

Building a charging kit that weighs almost nothing

The efficient modern setup replaces a tangle of individual bricks with a small number of well-chosen parts.

  • One universal plug adapter with sliding pins covering the main standards, ideally with an earthed option and a built-in USB port or two. One is usually enough; two if you are travelling as a pair and want to charge in two places.
  • One multi-port USB-C charger. A compact gallium nitride charger with two or three ports will run a laptop, a phone and a pair of earbuds from a single socket. This is the single biggest weight and bulk saving available, and it means you only need one adapter, not four.
  • Cables that match your devices, plus one spare. Cables fail more often than chargers. A short cable for a power bank in a pocket and a longer one for hotel beds that put the socket in an unhelpful place.
  • A power bank sized to your day rather than to your anxiety. Enough for two full phone charges covers a long sightseeing day comfortably.
  • A small pouch so the whole kit lives in one place and does not migrate into three different bags.

Skip the individual chargers that came with each device unless one is genuinely required. Skip the converter unless you identified a specific device that needs it.

Power banks and airline rules

Power banks contain lithium cells, and aviation rules treat them accordingly. The consistent worldwide rule is that they belong in cabin baggage, never in checked luggage, because a fire in the hold is far harder to deal with than one in the cabin.

Capacity limits are expressed in watt-hours and are set by the airline within international guidance, with larger units requiring approval and the largest not permitted at all. Airlines have also been tightening their rules on using and charging power banks during a flight, with some now requiring them to be kept in sight rather than stowed overhead. Because these policies have been changing and vary between carriers, check the current rules published by the airline you are actually flying rather than relying on what applied last year.

Practical implication: if you pack a bag the night before, put the power bank in your cabin bag first, before anything else, so it cannot end up in the wrong place.

A charging strategy for the road

Running out of battery abroad is rarely about the charger; it is about timing.

Top up opportunistically. Charge when you sit down, not when the battery warns you. Breakfast, a coffee stop and the hour before you go out are three free charging windows a day.

Charge overnight from one socket. With a multi-port charger, everything goes on one plug and you never wake up to a dead camera.

Use the flight. Many long-haul seats have a USB port or a socket. Bring the cable in your seat pocket rather than in the overhead bin.

Reduce the drain, not just increase the supply. Screen brightness, background app refresh and constant location updates cost far more battery than most people realise. Carry the power bank charged. An empty power bank is a paperweight. Charge it the night before departure alongside everything else.

Power is only half the equation on arrival. A fully charged phone with no data still cannot show you the route from the airport, translate a menu or confirm where you are staying.
