Most Samsung and Android eSIM failures come down to three settings rather than a fault: data roaming switched off for the travel line, the wrong line selected for mobile data, or a plan that has not started yet. A fourth cause, a region variant that never supported eSIM, explains nearly every case where the Add eSIM option is missing entirely.

This page works through the Samsung Galaxy and general Android fixes in order, covers the Samsung specific error messages, and explains why the same model number supports eSIM in one country and not another.

In this guide:

The three settings that fix most cases

Open Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager on a Galaxy. Other Android phones use Network and Internet, then SIMs. Then check these in order.

  1. Is the travel line switched on. A line added and left disabled looks installed and does nothing. Toggle it on.
  2. Is it the mobile data line. Under Preferred SIM or Mobile data, select the travel eSIM. A phone happily registered on the travel line while routing data through your home line will either fail or bill you roaming.
  3. Is data roaming on for that line. This is the single most common fix. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming partners on local networks, so with data roaming off the line registers and then refuses to pass traffic. Switch it on for the travel line and leave it off for your home line.

If all three are correct and there is still no data, restart the phone, then try manual network selection: turn off automatic selection and pick a listed operator by hand, as described in fixing no signal abroad. Our complete troubleshooting guide covers the remaining checks including APN settings.

Samsung error messages decoded

Samsung uses different wording from iPhone for the same underlying states, which is why searching the exact phrase often returns iPhone advice that does not match your menus.

The slot numbering is worth calling out. On a dual SIM Galaxy, SIM 1 and SIM 2 are positions rather than technologies, so an error naming SIM 1 can refer to your eSIM. Work from the named line in SIM manager, not from the number in the message, and see the eSIM not provisioned guide for the full sequence.

When Add eSIM is missing entirely

If SIM manager offers no way to add an eSIM, the phone almost certainly does not support it, and no setting will reveal the option.

Samsung eSIM support varies by region and by variant, not just by model name. The same model can ship with eSIM in one market and without it in another, and the dual physical SIM version of a model is the variant most likely to lack it. Carrier branded handsets occasionally have the feature disabled in firmware.

Two things to check before concluding anything:

  • Your exact model number, found under Settings, About phone. Match that string, not the marketing name, against Samsung’s Galaxy eSIM compatibility list.
  • Pending software updates. A stalled update occasionally hides the menu, and installing it restores the option.

Broadly, Galaxy S20 and later flagship models support eSIM in most markets, as do recent Z Fold and Z Flip devices, with the regional exceptions above. Our which phones support eSIM list covers the model ranges, and the device compatibility checker confirms your own handset in under a minute.

If the phone genuinely has no eSIM support, the options are a physical SIM bought locally or a different handset. Our guide to when an eSIM is not the right choice is honest about where that line falls.

Galaxy S22, S23, S24 and newer

Searches naming a specific Galaxy generation nearly always turn out to be one of the general causes above rather than a model specific bug, but two patterns are worth knowing.

Post update behaviour. After a major One UI upgrade, some handsets reset per line preferences, which silently turns off data roaming for the travel line or moves mobile data back to the home line. If an eSIM that worked yesterday stopped working after an update, check those two switches before anything else.

Variant confusion within one generation. Because support varies by region and variant, one S23 can have eSIM and another S23 bought in a different market can not. That is why a friend’s identical looking phone behaves differently, and why the model number under About phone is the only reliable answer. The compatibility list linked above resolves it in seconds.

Everything else, on every generation from the S20 family onward, follows the same order: line enabled, set as mobile data, data roaming on, restart, manual network selection.

Android phones other than Samsung

Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Motorola and Honor all implement eSIM through the same Android framework, so the fixes above apply with different menu names. Google documents the Pixel flow in its dual SIM guide.

Two differences worth knowing. Several Chinese brands ship eSIM only in specific international variants, so regional support is even more uneven than on Samsung, and Indian market variants of otherwise eSIM capable models frequently lack it. And some manufacturer skins bury per line data roaming inside the SIM’s own settings page rather than at the top level, which is where people give up looking.

What not to do on Android

Do not delete the eSIM profile to start over. Android makes deletion easy, which is precisely the problem: most travel profiles use single use activation codes and cannot be reinstalled. Ask the provider about a reissue before removing anything.

Do not reset network settings as a first step. It clears saved Wi Fi networks and APN configuration, and it fixes almost none of the states in the table above.

Do not leave home data roaming on while troubleshooting. A home line quietly roaming next to a travel eSIM produces exactly the surprise bill the eSIM was bought to avoid, as covered in avoiding roaming bill shock.

Once the line is working, plans by country are on the destinations index, and the dual SIM travel setup guide covers how to leave the two lines configured so this does not recur on the next trip.

Buying a plan that installs cleanly on a Galaxy

If the plan itself has expired, run out, or was never going to work in the country you are in, a new one takes minutes.

Viasimo plans install on any eSIM capable Galaxy straight from SIM manager: the QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase and there is no app to download first. Every plan is prepaid and one off, so nothing renews, and the countries covered plus the validity are shown before you pay, which is the check that prevents the coverage and expiry failures this guide describes.

Compare sizes on the destinations index, or start with the USA, Europe or Japan.

To go straight to buying, open the eSIM plan picker, choose where you are going and how long for, and the matching plans appear with their prices.
