A travel eSIM can download cleanly, appear as a second line, and still move no data at all. When that happens, the profile is almost never broken. Why an installed eSIM shows no data
Installing an eSIM adds a network profile to your phone. That is a real step forward, but it is not the same as using that profile for the internet. Your phone still has its original home line, and by default it keeps sending data through that line because that is the setup it knows.
So you end up with two lines side by side: your home line, which you use every day, and the new eSIM profile, which is registered but idle. Step 1: Set the eSIM as your data line
This is the switch that fixes most people. Your phone is a dual SIM device once the eSIM is installed, and dual SIM phones let you choose which line carries data. If that choice is still pointing at your home line, the eSIM never gets used no matter how strong its signal looks.

Step 3: Turn off Low Data Mode
Sometimes the connection is technically alive but everything feels broken: maps stall, messages will not send pictures, apps refuse to refresh. Low Data Mode is a frequent culprit. It is a setting that pauses background traffic and trims data use, and it applies per line, so an eSIM can inherit it and end up crippled while looking connected.
On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, tap the eSIM line, then Cellular Data Options, and switch Low Data Mode off. On Android the equivalent is Data Saver, usually under Network and internet; make sure it is off, or add your key apps to its unrestricted list. Step 4: Label and enable the line

Second, give the line a clear name like “Travel” or the country you are visiting. Step 5: Restart the phone
If you have changed several settings and data still has not kicked in, restart the phone before you do anything drastic. A reboot forces the device to drop and re-establish its network connections, re-register the eSIM line, and clear the stuck states that settings changes sometimes leave behind. Power the phone fully off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. On iPhone, hold the side and volume buttons, slide to power off, then power up again. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, tap the eSIM line, then Cellular Data Network, and check the APN field matches whatever your provider supplied. On Android, open SIMs, tap the eSIM, then Access Point Names, and do the same. If the field is empty, enter the exact value from your eSIM instructions; if it looks wrong, correct it and save.
