A tablet or laptop can only use a travel eSIM if three separate things are true: it contains a mobile modem, that modem supports eSIM rather than only a physical card, and nothing in the software blocks you from installing a third party profile. Plenty of devices pass the first test and fail the second or third, which is why cellular capable and eSIM capable are not the same claim. For most travellers, tethering from a phone that already has a plan is the simpler and cheaper answer.
This trips people up because the marketing language is identical across very different products. A tablet described as cellular might download a QR code profile in ninety seconds, or might insist on a physical card, or might be the Wi-Fi variant of the same model sitting in a different box.
This guide separates the three conditions, explains where tablets and laptops genuinely differ, makes the honest case for tethering, and sets out the specific situations where a second plan for a second device is worth paying for.

Three conditions your device has to meet
A mobile modem has to be physically present. Tablets are usually sold in two variants, Wi-Fi only and cellular, that look and feel identical. The cellular one costs more because it contains a modem and antennas. This cannot be retrofitted, enabled by software, or unlocked with a purchase. If you bought the Wi-Fi variant, no plan of any kind will help; the hotspot on your phone is your only route.
The modem has to support eSIM, not just SIM cards. An embedded profile needs a reprogrammable chip and operating system support for downloading a profile over the internet. A device can absolutely have a modem, a SIM tray and full mobile data support while having no eSIM capability whatsoever. Nothing in the software has to be blocking you. This is the condition people never anticipate. Some devices, particularly laptops, provision mobile plans through a manufacturer or operating system marketplace that offers a curated list of partner operators. If a device only accepts plans from that list, it will not accept an arbitrary profile no matter how capable the hardware is. All three have to be true. Two out of three gets you nothing.
Tablets are the likeliest to work
If any secondary device is going to take a travel eSIM, it is a tablet. Cellular tablets are common, the major platforms support remote provisioning, and installing a profile follows the same QR code flow as a phone.
The caveats are worth knowing before you spend money. Support varies by generation, by manufacturer and sometimes by the region a device was sold in, so the safe move is to check the manufacturer’s own documentation for your exact model rather than a general list. Samsung’s Galaxy eSIM compatibility page is a good illustration of why: it lists eSIM capable tablets in a separate, much shorter section than eSIM capable phones, so having a Galaxy tablet tells you nothing on its own. Apple’s equivalent guidance for iPhone is at support.apple.com/en-us/118669; for an iPad, the answer sits in the technical specifications for your exact model rather than on that page. Manufacturer pages are updated as new models ship, which no third party summary can promise.
The other thing to know is what a tablet plan gives you. Travel eSIMs are generally data only profiles: mobile data without a voice line or SMS. For a tablet that is a perfect match, because a tablet is a browsing, mapping, reading and video calling device rather than a phone. Laptops and the WWAN gap
Laptops are where expectations and reality part company most sharply.
Cellular connectivity in a laptop comes from a WWAN module, and on business machines it is very often an optional extra chosen at order time. Corporate fleets sometimes specify it; individual buyers usually do not, because it adds cost and most people assumed they would use Wi-Fi. The result is that two laptops carrying the same model name can differ entirely on this point, and the spec sheet you find online may describe a configuration you do not own.
Where the module does exist, provisioning is the next hurdle. Some laptops handle eSIM the way a phone does. Others route you into a plan marketplace built around partner operators, which is convenient if your operator is on the list and a dead end if it is not.
And on some laptop lines the question does not arise at all. Apple’s notebooks do not ship with a cellular modem, so for a MacBook the answer is Wi-Fi or a hotspot. That is not a limitation to work around; it is simply the shape of the product, and the tethering workflow below is what Mac users already do.
Why tethering is usually the better answer
For the overwhelming majority of trips, connecting your tablet or laptop through your phone is the right call, and not as a compromise. It is genuinely the better product decision.
- One purchase, one allowance. No second plan to size, buy, install or track. Data flows to whichever device needs it, which is exactly the flexibility a fixed second plan cannot give you.
- One device to prepare. Install the eSIM on your phone before you fly, test it once, and every other device you carry inherits the connection.
- Nothing extra to carry or configure. Tethering is built into every modern phone and takes one toggle.
- It works on devices that will never support eSIM. Wi-Fi only tablets, older laptops, e readers, a travelling companion’s phone: all of them can join a mobile hotspot.
The honest downsides. Hotspot use drains a phone battery quickly, so carry a power bank and expect to plug in during long working sessions. Some plans restrict or exclude tethering, so read the plan terms if a laptop is central to your trip. And laptops consume far more than phones do, because desktop software updates, syncs and backs up without ever considering that it is on a travel plan. Set the connection as metered on Windows, enable Low Data Mode on macOS, pause cloud folder sync, and postpone system updates until you find Wi-Fi. Those four settings are the difference between a tethered laptop that behaves and one that empties a plan in an afternoon.
When a separate plan earns its place
There are real cases where a second eSIM on a second device is worth the money:
- The laptop or tablet is the primary tool all day. If you work full days from a laptop and the phone is incidental, going through the phone puts your entire working day at the mercy of one battery.
- Two devices need to be online in different places. A tablet left navigating in a rental car while you walk somewhere with the phone cannot be tethered.
- Connectivity is business critical. A second independent line is genuine redundancy on a trip where being offline has a cost, which our business traveller checklist treats as a planning decision rather than an afterthought.
- You are travelling with someone who also needs data. Two plans on two devices often beats one phone acting as everyone’s hotspot and dying by mid afternoon.

Outside those cases, a second plan mostly buys convenience you will not notice.
How to check your device in five minutes
Do this before you buy anything, not after.
- Identify the exact model. Not the product family: the specific model identifier, from the settings screen or the original box. Cellular and Wi-Fi variants often differ only in a suffix.
- Look for a cellular section in settings. On a tablet, look for mobile data or cellular. On a Windows laptop, look for a mobile broadband or cellular entry in network settings. If it does not exist, there is no modem and the question is settled.
- Look for an add plan option. Wording varies, but if the device can add an eSIM it will offer something along the lines of adding a mobile plan or eSIM. Some devices also display an EID, which is the identifier of the embedded chip and a strong sign eSIM is supported.
- Confirm with the manufacturer. Their documentation is authoritative for your model and region; nothing else is.
- Check for restrictions. Company managed devices frequently block adding profiles through device management policies, and that has nothing to do with the hardware.

A setup that works on the road
Here is the arrangement that handles a working trip across Europe with the least fuss and the fewest purchases.
Install a travel eSIM on your phone before you leave, over home Wi-Fi, and check it appears in settings. Keep your home line active alongside it for calls and texts. Before departure, download offline maps, any documents you will need, and anything you plan to watch. Test the hotspot once at home so the first attempt is not in an airport.
On the road, connect the laptop or tablet to the phone’s hotspot when you need it and turn it off when you do not, since an idle hotspot still drains battery. Keep the laptop connection marked as metered, keep cloud photo backup on Wi-Fi only, and use accommodation Wi-Fi for anything large. Check your usage after the first full day: one honest data point beats any estimate, and if the trip is running hungrier than expected you simply buy another prepaid plan rather than facing a bill later.
