Every major travel eSIM provider now advertises coverage in 200 or more destinations. When five competitors publish the same number, that number has stopped being useful. It tells you the category baseline, not which provider will work better on your trip.

Why country counts are not a differentiator
Most travel eSIM providers do not own networks. They buy wholesale access through a relatively small number of global roaming aggregators and resell it under their own brand. That is a perfectly legitimate model, and it explains why their footprints look so alike: they are frequently built on overlapping underlying agreements.
As at September 2026, Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad and Ubigi all advertise 200 or more destinations. A comparison table row for coverage count would show five nearly identical entries and help nobody.
Worse, the headline number is often inconsistent inside a single provider’s own site, because different products have different footprints. One provider’s about page says 200 or more countries while a specific product page for its global plan lists a much smaller figure. Both are true of different things.
So ignore the count. Ask a narrower question: in the specific countries on my itinerary, whose network am I on?
The host operator is the real variable
This is the piece of information that predicts your experience, and it is the one most providers bury.
Inside any given country, operators differ substantially. One may have dense urban coverage and thin rural reach; another may be the opposite. One may have deployed 5G widely while another runs 4G only. If your travel eSIM rides on the weaker of two operators in a country, no amount of provider branding changes what your phone does in a valley.
Good providers publish the host operator per destination. That single disclosure lets you do something no marketing copy allows: check the operator against independent coverage maps and, in many countries, published regulator data on network performance. You are then comparing a verifiable fact rather than a claim.
If a provider does not publish it, ask support before buying. Every Viasimo destination page names the host operator and the fastest radio technology available in that country, and the full table is on one coverage page rather than appearing only as a badge on whatever you are being sold. A provider that cannot or will not tell you whose network you will be using is asking for a level of trust it has not earned.
What speed claims can and cannot mean
No travel eSIM provider builds radio networks, so no travel eSIM provider can promise you a speed. What a plan can do is grant or withhold access to a technology the host operator has already deployed.
That leads to two honest statements and one dishonest one.
Honest: this plan includes 5G access where the host operator offers it. Also honest: this country’s host network is 4G only, so 5G is unavailable regardless of your phone. Dishonest: 5G everywhere, or a specific megabits per second figure presented as a guarantee.
The practical point for travellers is that the 4G versus 5G distinction matters far less abroad than coverage does. A solid 4G connection handles maps, messaging, video calls, streaming and tethering perfectly well. A 5G connection you cannot get because you are outside a city centre is worth nothing. Priority, congestion and why busy places feel slow
There is one structural reason a visitor connection can underperform a local one, and it is worth understanding because it explains most of the complaints people post.
When you roam onto a network, you may be assigned a lower traffic priority than that operator’s own subscribers. Most of the time this is invisible, because the cell has capacity to spare. It becomes visible exactly when the cell is congested: a stadium, a festival, a main station at rush hour, an airport when three flights land together.
So the pattern to expect is not a permanently slower connection but a connection that degrades earlier than a local phone’s in crowded places. If you are judging a plan, judge it on a normal street rather than in an arrivals hall.
This also means a speed test taken in the first ten minutes of a trip is close to meaningless. Airports are the worst place on any network.
A five step method for comparing two providers
If you want a repeatable process rather than a principle, this is it. It takes about ten minutes and works on any pair of providers.
- List the countries you will actually be in, not the region. Regional plan definitions differ at the edges, and the edges are where a plan quietly excludes the country you needed.
- Find the host operator each provider uses in each of those countries. Published on the product page by the better providers, available from support otherwise. If neither route produces an answer, that is your answer.
- Check those operators independently. National regulators in many countries publish coverage and performance data, and independent coverage maps exist for most major markets. You are now comparing operators rather than brands.
- Check what each provider says about limits. For an unlimited plan, the daily threshold and the throttled speed. For a metered plan, the allowance and the validity. A provider that publishes numbers is easier to evaluate than one that publishes adjectives.
- Check the support channel and its hours against the timezone you will be in. Round the clock support advertised without hours is worth less than stated office hours you can actually rely on.
Notice that none of those five steps involves the headline country count, and only one touches speed. That is deliberate, because those are the two things providers market hardest and the two that tell you least.
Diagnosing a slow connection abroad
When a connection is slower than expected, work through these in order before blaming the plan.
Have you been throttled? On an unlimited plan, passing the daily fair usage threshold reduces your speed sharply for the rest of the day, and it looks exactly like poor signal. This is the most common cause and the easiest to misread. If you do not know your plan’s threshold, that is worth knowing before you travel.
Is network selection stuck? If your phone was set to choose a network manually on a previous trip, it may be clinging to a weak partner or searching for one that does not exist here. Set network selection back to automatic.
Are you on the intended operator? Your phone’s status bar or network settings will name the network you are attached to. If it is not the host operator your provider publishes, you may be on a weaker partner network, and toggling airplane mode for thirty seconds often forces a better reselection.
Is it the location rather than the plan? Try the same test somewhere else before concluding anything. Indoor spaces, basements, trains and dense crowds all suppress speed independent of your provider.
If none of those explains it, contact the provider with the network name and your location. A provider with a real support channel can often tell you immediately whether the issue is known.
