Fast, dependable coverage follows Route 58 along the coast and reaches the outer resort towns, so translating a soba menu, mapping the drive to Cape Manzamo or checking a ferry time is easy from the start.

On Okinawa you get dependable coverage across Naha, the Kokusai-dori strip, the American Village area around Chatan and the resort belt up the west coast toward Onna. It weakens in the dense Yanbaru forest up north and on the smaller outer islands. Set your eSIM up before landing so it connects as you arrive, and keep your home SIM for calls. Tip: download maps before heading north or island-hopping by ferry, since signal thins away from the main towns.

Do I have to register a SIM here?

Japan requires registration only for voice-enabled SIMs. Data-only products, which is what a travel eSIM is, are exempt — nothing to show, nothing to file.

Local SIM-registration rules apply to buying a SIM in the country. A travel eSIM is a foreign profile roaming onto the local network, so you are not registering anything locally and there is no counter to queue at.

5G only works where the host network has deployed it and your phone supports it. Everywhere else it falls back to 4G LTE.
