Do I have to register a SIM here?

Turkey registers handsets, not just SIMs. A foreign phone works on Turkish networks for 120 days from your entry; past that the device is blocked unless you register its IMEI at a PTT office for roughly ₺3,000–₺4,000. Ordinary tourist trips are well under that limit and are unaffected.

Local SIM-registration rules apply to buying a SIM in the country. A travel eSIM is a foreign profile roaming onto the local network, so you are not registering anything locally and there is no counter to queue at.

What actually catches people out

The 120-day clock is per device, not per trip, so repeat visitors on long stays are the ones who get caught by it — not the average two-week traveller.
