Curacao is small, dry and mostly low, which is good news for a phone. One operator covers the island on 4G, the distances are short, and there is very little terrain to hide behind. Expect a comfortable connection in and around Willemstad and a patchier one at the wild western end.

A quick correction worth making, because it appears in a lot of travel writing: Curacao's capital is Willemstad. Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, a different island. If you are booking anything, check which one the listing means.

Getting online when you land

Provision the eSIM at home over wifi and leave the profile inactive until you touch down at Hato. The install itself is the only part that needs a connection, so getting it out of the way early removes the one thing that can genuinely strand you.

On arrival, activate the profile and enable data roaming for it. Attachment is usually quick. If you are stepping off a cruise ship in the Otrobanda terminal rather than off a plane, the same applies, with the added wrinkle that ship wifi will have been switched off as you came into port.

Keep your home SIM seated so your normal number still rings. Dive shops, car rental desks and villa managers on the island tend to call.

The networks you'll be on

Digicel provides the coverage here, on 3G and 4G/LTE. There is no 5G on the island, so the icon you are looking for is 4G, and that is the ceiling.

One operator means one footprint. There is no second network for your handset to fall across to, so where Digicel is weak, you are simply weak. On an island this size that turns out to matter less than it would elsewhere, because the populated south-west coast is where nearly everything is and that is where the network concentrates.

Four G here handles what visitors need: maps, messaging, video calls home, streaming a film in the evening, and uploading the day's underwater photos. If you drop to 3G in the countryside, scale back to text and let the uploads wait until you are back at the apartment.

Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Solid: Willemstad across both banks, so Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai and Scharloo; the Queen Emma pontoon bridge and the waterfront either side of St Anna Bay; the resort strip at Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach; Piscadera and the hotel cluster there; the road out to the airport; and the residential spread through Julianadorp and Zeelandia.

Reasonable: the middle of the island around Sint Willibrordus, Barber and the salt pans where the flamingos gather, and the road along the south coast toward the western beaches.

Thin: the far north-west around Westpunt, the tracks down to the smaller coves, the Christoffel national park interior and the trail up the mountain, and the wave-battered north coast at Shete Boka. Boat trips out to Klein Curacao lose signal well before you reach the island, and you should assume you have none for the day.

Underwater, obviously, you have nothing. Curacao is a shore-diving island and you will spend real time out of contact simply because you are submerged. Tell someone your plan.

What you'll actually use data for here

Getting around, mostly. There is no rail and the bus network is limited, so most visitors drive, and the beach turnoffs are unmarked in a way that makes a live map genuinely useful. Many of the good coves sit at the end of a dirt track with nothing but a hand-painted sign.

Then: checking beach and dive site conditions, since the north coast can be rough while the south is glass; booking dive slots and restaurant tables, which fill up fast in the Pietermaai strip; and translation help, though you will need less than you think. Papiamentu is the everyday language, but Dutch, English and Spanish are all widely spoken and most people will switch to whichever you start with.

Card payments are widely accepted, so your phone doubles as a backup wallet if you use a mobile payment app.

Before you fly

Download an offline map of the whole island. It is a single small download and it covers you for every unmarked beach track on the west end.

Save your accommodation's location as a pinned coordinate rather than an address. Curacao's residential addressing is inconsistent and a pin is what you will actually navigate to.

Bring a waterproof case and a power bank. Salt, sun and sand are hard on a phone, and a device left searching for signal in the north-west will drain faster than you expect.

If you are diving, agree surface intervals and check-in times with someone before you go in, and do not rely on a phone you have left in a car at a remote cove.
