The caveats are regional: early US and Korean S20 and S21 units shipped with eSIM disabled or absent, Hong Kong variants often used dual physical SIMs instead, and carrier firmware sometimes hides the menu. Google Pixel

Pixels have shipped eSIM hardware since the Pixel 2, but practical support for third party profiles starts with the Pixel 3, and everything from the Pixel 4 onward is dependable. Other brands

Motorola has included eSIM since the 2019 Razr and across the Edge line; Sony from the Xperia 1 IV and 10 IV generation; OnePlus and Xiaomi in recent global flagships, though Chinese domestic versions typically omit it; and Huawei carried it in the P40 era. How to check your exact phone in 30 seconds

  1. Dial *#06#. If the readout includes an EID (a 32 digit number) alongside the IMEI, the eSIM hardware is present.

  4. Confirm the download, then name the line something obvious like Travel.
  5. In SIM manager, leave your home SIM as the default for calls and texts; you will switch Mobile data to the travel line when you land.

  1. Open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs.
  2. Tap Add SIM, then Download a SIM instead.

Other Android brands

Menus drift between Motorola, Sony, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others, but the destination is always inside the mobile network or SIM card settings, typically Settings, then Network and internet or Mobile networks, then an Add eSIM or Add carrier option. Activating on arrival

Android puts SIM management in one place (SIM manager on Samsung, SIMs on Pixel) where you assign separate defaults for calls, texts and mobile data. Both platforms let you rename lines; call them Home and Travel rather than SIM 1 and SIM 2, and every later decision about which line rings, carries data or roams becomes self explanatory. Android also remembers per contact SIM preferences for calling, which is worth reviewing after setup so a reply to a contact does not quietly route out through the travel line as an international call; the cleanest arrangement keeps all calls on the home number and treats the travel eSIM as a pure data line.

Data saving settings for Android abroad
