Band compatibility is about radio frequencies. Mobile networks broadcast on specific bands, and your phone can only talk to a network if its modem supports the same ones. Each band is just a slice of spectrum with a number, and different countries and operators use different slices. When your phone’s bands and the local network’s bands overlap, you connect; when they do not, you get weak signal, a much slower fallback, or nothing.
Here is the catch that surprises travellers: an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone can still struggle abroad if the bands do not line up. The eSIM installs, the account is active, everything looks correct, and yet the signal is poor because the hardware simply cannot tune to the frequency the local towers are using. That is a hardware limit, not an eSIM problem, and no amount of reinstalling the profile fixes it.
Most modern flagship phones support a wide spread of bands and travel almost anywhere without trouble. Older, budget, or region-specific models are the ones to watch, since a phone built for one market may be missing bands used heavily in another. This is closely tied to network coverage: coverage is where the towers are, band support is whether your phone can hear them, and both need to be true for good 4G LTE or 5G service.
